I remember back in the old days of 5th ed when Space Wolves ran massed mech, that one of the more common build styles was to give Missile Launcher Long Fangs a spare Razorback, not necessarily to transport anything, but simply so they could squeeze in more firepower. Likewise, one thing that Chaos does not have that Loyalists do is a "Landspeeder" equivalent: A semi-expendable standalone vehicle that can provide some fire support/harassment or move-blocking.

Fast-forward to today: The Chaos Warband detachment for Black Crusade is similar-ish to the Battle demi-company, though it doesn't get the "Free Transports taken twice" bonus. However, it does have more slot flexibility (rather than "2 Troops, 1 FA, 1 HS", you can do "2 Troops, 3 FA, 3 HS"), and it does give universal Obsec. And although Chaos does not get the Razorback, their Rhino has a lot more loadout options compared to the vanilla one (though admittedly a lot of them are weak).

There are two units that "can" take Rhinos but generally don't need to: Autocannon Havocs are the main one, but there's the occasional case for taking Crimson Slaughter Possessed as your mandatory Elite (you want a Prophet Sorcerer).

Suppose you wanted to run a pair of empty Rhinos, either with Dirge Casters (as the "Poor Chaos Darkshroud") or Havoc Launchers or even the occasional Combi-Melta/Combi-Flamer (say you wanted to fish for Ghoststorm to slingshot a Rhino around as a cover-flusher). Other than the whole "but you're using Chaos" argument, how workable would this be?

I often run an obsec truck for my orks even when i take 30-man squads. I've found it to be somewhat more effective than a kopta.

However, in the chaos case it's a choice between a rhino and a spawn. I'm really not sure if the rhino's obsec and miniscule shooting overshadows a nurgle spawn.

If you are taking more than the minimum requirements of the Warband, then you're going to be struggling for points for the larger auxiliaries and other detachments with good stuff.

The simplest way of seeing if this is worthwhile is asking yourself how often in your previous games having a extra ObSec rhino or 3 in your table half have won you the game? For me, the answer is almost never.

If you are bringing fist of the gods formation, it might make sense to have two empty Rhinos running of the left and right flanks of your Tank deathstar (which would probably have vindicators centre).

Vindicators have flimsy flanks, so having to first go through a 35 or 40 point Rhino before they are hit the Vindicators might be good. This assume they don't want to directly try for the Front 13 AV armor of the Vindicator with the 6++ save.

And if there is nothing else to do, if your Vindicators are already in range to lob their death pie plates, and if your warp smith trailing behind the vindicator doesnt need to repair anything (what the heck is your opponent even doing), your smith can hop on to the empty Rhino and have it flat out to get him into melta, flame and melee range.

You can run a double screen of Rhino first, then a predator tank before having your vindicators centre. So that means now your opponent has to go through A Rhino AND a predator tank before he can finally get at the soft flank of your vindicator. And this assumes neither one becomes a wreck and totally blocks line of sight of the vindicator flank in the first place. lol

And since by this point you are probably going full Iron Warrior theme, having more cheap objective secured Rhinos to add to the armour satuation might not be a bad idea.

Just pray you don't run into alpha strike drop pod lists...

Orlando

Been running Rhinos with havoc launchers in my 30k IW for years now. Great way to add some extra punch to the line without resorting to whirlwinds(bring one of those in addition too.) For us its 50 points which is costly but with enough other vehicles on the board, empty Rhinos tend to not attract as much attention as Sicarians and Scorpius whirlwinds. When my current AL 30k army is done whose primary purpose is rhino assault I will consider running it as a 40k army as well due to the mass crossover. Does chaos get multi-melta pintle mounts as well or just havocs and combis?

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM!

Nope, CSM Rhinos in 40K only gets combi melta/plasma which is a one shot deal. Only other option is havoc launcher.
