Sometime in 2015 I picked up my paintbrush again from a twenty year long hiatus. I like to fondly imagine I did good work when I was younger, but more likely was simply very enthusiastic. That same enthusiasm was reignited over the last year or so, but along with it came a more focused ideology of attempting to learn and improve from all of the various videos, tutorials and knowledge on the internet that I never had access to as a child.

When I came back to painting, I had already decided to go back to 40k as I have always loved the models, but hadn't yet decided on what army. The storyline of my little army is important too me and I wanted to create something singularly tragic in the nature of the grimdark universe. Reading and learning about some of the armies out there I was terribly undecided until I stumbled one day on a description of the Lamenters, oddly enough, on 1d4chan. And their story spoke volumes too me. Looking at their color scheme initially filled me with trepidation as I do not even now feel like I am doing them justice. In my mind, they are glorious winged defenders of humanity, the very essence of humility, sacrifice and perseverance. And of course, flawed on a level so deep that their personal injustice manifests beyond the level of physical or even mental ailments. How do you defeat poor luck? How do you even fight it? Can anyone anywhere continue to hold the line in the face of loss after tragic loss? Theirs is not the place of the valiant hero. Theirs is the lot of constant attrition, continual defiance, and loss unending. Theirs is the story of the wider imperium, writ small. Theirs is not a story of damnation. But it is a story of Ruin. And we, their audience, are left with nothing more than ghosts and ashes, their ending unsung, unknown and unwritten. Yet still I wonder. Malakim? Are you out there?

With a backstory filled with battles where even the triumphs are losses, the decimation of their forces several times over, the loss of their leader and the eventual sentencing of penitent crusade, I could hardly wait to begin.

These are my attempts after about 6 months. I am continuing to evolve my forces and my painting styles and I still have so so much to learn. Luckily, I learn plenty by reading up on what you fine people post here as well as the youtubes! So I finally feel like I can share. I hope you like what I've done and I hope I can continue to learn more via your critique. I want to learn to paint these until they're as amazing in practice as they are in my head. Thanks in advance for advice. Also, if anyone here knows anyone who writes at Gdubs, I sort of hope they can continue their story someday.

I'll add more later. Almost finished with my Tac squad, scouts, assaults, speeders and various vehicles. I'll update as I go.
Also, I've clearly done something odd here as Malakim is showing up multiple times on my screen. That's alright I suppose. The world needs more Malakim.

And here's my Tac squad! Had one little piece I had forgotten to fix earlier til I went to take a pic.

These are assault marines that still need their shoulder pads finished. Below are scouts, more DC and vehicles that all need finishing.

Here are two photos of my color process. I base them in a burgundy red, then coat them in Averland sunset. Today I tried out citadel's Air for the first time. I found I still had to thin it, but that may have just been my preference. Afterwards I highlight layer with a light yellow that I sorta created myself. Then I will begin all my base layers, shading and detail work. This Baal Predator is the last vehicle I have to work on currently.

Nice looking army. I know all about the pain of trying to get a good yellow that you like and is easy to paint ( I am working on Fists atm). But I LOVE the sad angel banner...sad angel is sad

Thanks man

I thought it was really funny given their nature and the fact that their first banner got taken and probably destroyed by the Minotaurs. Least I think it was them. May have to go back and read that part again. The other guys at my games shop got a real kick out of that too

Here are two more of Malakims' work in progress photos. I had originally constructed him out of 6 different models. I spent alot of time trying to decide on whether to make his helmet the more traditional death mask style like alot of the sanguinary guard, the sanguinor or Dante, but in the end I settled for a more romanesque style helm mainly due to just really liking the look. The other thing that took time to put together was the spear. It's actually 3 pieces, a BA power axe cut down from the sanguinary guard sprues, a speartip off of a Malifaux model and a length of further shaft from a power stave. Put together, I think it makes a great looking spear, and certainly one no other model really has.

And he's one after the first gold coating. I was playing around with the Sanguinor jump pack, but Malakim was designed without a jump pack in mind (a mistake that needs rectifying)!

And this is my Libby! He's the old metal model from 20 years ago. I drilled his head off and added this one which I personally like better and gave him some of the sanguinary guards wings painted red like in his psychic power "Wings of Sanguinius." It might seem a little strange to give him and extension on his force axe, but I ike the idea that I could play with it as either an axe or a stave depending on my game.

Cool looking army, not very often you see a washed out yellow for Lamenters. I really like the banner on the Sang Guard too.

Thanks Evilcheese

I was sorta going for a sandy looking yellow like is referenced in the actual Forgeworld Badab book. Recently I found out GW has a very different shade of yellow than Forgeworld referenced for Lamenters however. I got a poster with the colors of a bunch of chapters and it's way more of a bright sunny yellow on that. Now I kinda wanna try and paint it up that way and see how I like that look too. If I do, I'll end up literally repainting everything though. Thats just.... urggg. But I honestly might do it if I like it enough. I kinda love painting these guys
