Sometime in 2015 I picked up my paintbrush again from a twenty year long hiatus. I like to fondly imagine I did good work when I was younger, but more likely was simply very enthusiastic. That same enthusiasm was reignited over the last year or so, but along with it came a more focused ideology of attempting to learn and improve from all of the various videos, tutorials and knowledge on the internet that I never had access to as a child.
When I came back to painting, I had already decided to go back to
40k as I have always loved the models, but hadn't yet decided on what army. The storyline of my little army is important too me and I wanted to create something singularly tragic in the nature of the grimdark universe. Reading and learning about some of the armies out there I was terribly undecided until I stumbled one day on a description of the Lamenters, oddly enough, on 1d4chan. And their story spoke volumes too me. Looking at their color scheme initially filled me with trepidation as I do not even now feel like I am doing them justice. In my mind, they are glorious winged defenders of humanity, the very essence of humility, sacrifice and perseverance. And of course, flawed on a level so deep that their personal injustice manifests beyond the level of physical or even mental ailments. How do you defeat poor luck? How do you even fight it? Can anyone anywhere continue to hold the line in the face of loss after tragic loss? Theirs is not the place of the valiant hero. Theirs is the lot of constant attrition, continual defiance, and loss unending. Theirs is the story of the wider imperium, writ small. Theirs is not a story of damnation. But it is a story of Ruin. And we, their audience, are left with nothing more than ghosts and ashes, their ending unsung, unknown and unwritten. Yet still I wonder. Malakim? Are you out there?
With a backstory filled with battles where even the triumphs are losses, the decimation of their forces several times over, the loss of their leader and the eventual sentencing of penitent crusade, I could hardly wait to begin.
These are my attempts after about 6 months. I am continuing to evolve my forces and my painting styles and I still have so so much to learn. Luckily, I learn plenty by reading up on what you fine people post here as well as the youtubes! So I finally feel like I can share. I hope you like what I've done and I hope I can continue to learn more via your critique. I want to learn to paint these until they're as amazing in practice as they are in my head. Thanks in advance for advice. Also, if anyone here knows anyone who writes at Gdubs, I sort of hope they can continue their story someday.

I'll add more later. Almost finished with my
Tac squad, scouts, assaults, speeders and various vehicles. I'll update as I go.
Also, I've clearly done something odd here as Malakim is showing up multiple times on my screen. That's alright I suppose. The world needs more Malakim.
Automatically Appended Next Post: And here's my
Tac squad! Had one little piece I had forgotten to fix earlier til I went to take a pic.
