Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

I have issued a challenge to my gaming group (about 8 people) to come up with the best death star unit.
Rules are:
1. Must follow the restrictions of 40k 7e
2. Must be under 1000pts
3. Must be contained within one unit (IC are allowed to join this unit.
4. No superheavies or GMC's
5. No forgeworld

There will be death stars from space marine, ork, DE, Necrons, Tau and perhaps others.

I shall be the adjudicator for the game (an 8 way battle will be pretty hectic) so I will not be taking part unfortunetly.

However I have still been brainstorming a few death stars just for fun. What would Dakka bring? (No restrictionsbecause you don't want to be 'that guy')

Is it FnP5+ of 4+ they have? Either way they aren't dying soon

Perhaps, but there is fun in a challenge. Most of our group members have never uaed a death star and those who have; have never used them in our friendly games because of common certesy.
If nothing else it might turn some of the players off of ever using death stars once they see that any normal army would be cerb stomped by them.

I'm curious to see how the new Stealerstar will fair. Don't remember the exact numbers/abilities off the top of my head, but we're looking at something like 100 rending attacks at WS 7 I6 if I remember right on a unit with furious charge, Rage, MTC, Flesh Hooks, and Fleet.

2000 Khorne Bloodbound (Skullfiend Tribe- Aqshy)
1000 Tzeentch Arcanites (Pyrofane Cult - Hysh) in progress
2000 Slaves to Darkness (Ravagers)

An eight-sided game with each army based around a deathstar unit? Hectic is right. At 1000- pts a deathstar is going to probably be most of the army, so if 2+ deathstars get into CC with each other, their players will be depending on willing the CC fight to win. I predict the 40k equivalent of a 5-car pileup. This sounds awesome by the way, and a battle report would be great.

As for what deathstars we can dream up, orks can't create deathstars like other armies can, but they do have a few options: green tide with attached painboy, warbikes with attached bike painboy and/or bike warboss, MANz missiles with or without Grotsnik, and deffkoptas with attached bike painboy and bike boss. TL;DR for ork deathstar, simply add painboy.

40k drinking game: take a shot everytime a book references Skitarii using transports.

I think this is as close to a 'deathstar' as I'm going to get in the realm of pointy-eared folk:
10x Wraithblades, axe/shield. 300pts.
2x Farseer. 200pts.
2x Spiritseer. 140pts.
Shadowseer, ML2, Mask of Secrets. 100pts.
Shadowseer, ML2. 85pts.
Succubus, Armour of Misery, Webway Portal, Archite Glaive. 145pts.

970pts total. WWP should ensure you've got time to land near an enemy deathstar, and depending on what powers you roll you could end up with some absurd shenanigans (some examples: RFP target non-vehicle non-GMC model with no chance of failure; target unit must make a Ld test on Ld2 to move, shoot, charge, cast powers, or run; unit of T6 Wraithguard gets a 2+/3++ rerolling all saves; target unit hits on 6s in melee at -1S; and theoretically on the charge we could be putting out thirty S10/AP2 attacks rerolling 1s to hit and rerolling to wound.)

It's unreliable, but potentially funny. And since the Mirror Of Minds auto-RFP trick requires a Dark Eldar relic within 6" of the target, a Harlequin relic within 12" of the target, and a power from Runes of Battle to go off first it's not very likely to happen (or be economical if it does go off) outside this particular test.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

7 man grotesque unit with abberation w/scissorhand (from Haemy covens)
Succubus with glaive and AoM
Shadowseer ML2 MoS
6XShadowseer ML2

Throw invisibility, veal of tears, and dance of shadows, and psyshriek entire units off the board with -5 LD in total (6 if you get terrify). You aren't going to kill it, and the unit can dish out a ton of fleshbane attacks in melee.

Not the strongest thing ever, but the best I can think of from DEldar and Harlequins.

Grim Dark Angels Interrogator-Chaplain

A Protoss colony world

Probably not the strongest by far, but here goes:
Start with a 6-man Ravenwing Command Squad with all the trimmings: Apothecary, Champion, RW banner. 295 points.
Now, add an Interrogator-Chaplain on a Bike, with the Mace of Redemption. 160+295 = 455 points so far.
Throw in Sammael on Corvex: 200 points. The total is now 655.
Last but not least, add a 3-man White Scars Librarius Conclave on bikes. 330 points for 3 ML2 libbies and their bikes. The total for the deathstar is 985 points.
If the list total is only 1000 points, the army will be unbound (I assume that for this challenge that's okay?), but here's what it can do:
For starters, it gets a 3+ rerollable Jink save due to being Ravenwing and having Skilled Rider, as long as a RW biker is toward the incoming fire. The squad has a pretty solid number of attacks, particularly when charging, and these attacks are S5 and Rending. The Interrogator-chaplain brings Zealot for those nice rerolls to hit in the first round of combat. Sammael, besides being pretty solid in CC, gives the unit extra range for charges. The libby conclave should probably prioritize Telepathy (for Invis/Shriek) and Sanctic Daemonology (for Hammerhand mainly, but Vortex could be good as well). All in all, with some luck on the psychic power generation rolls, could be pretty solid.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

I like the chaos option, slightly weakened due to point restrictions.

Cyclopian cabal:
Sorcerer ml 3 on bike, volw, force stave, spell familiar - 150
Sorcerer ml 3 on bike, volw, force axe, spell familiar - 150
Sorcerer ml 3 on bike, volw, force axe, spell familiar - 150
Sorcerer ml 2 w/ jump pack, volw, force stave, spell familiar - 145

- 570

Allied khorne daemonkin detachment:

HQ-
Chaos lord on juggernaut w/ pf and lighting claws, sigil of corruption, amd blood forged armour - 235

Cultists x7 w/ champ - 58

Flesh hounds x 8 - 128

-421

Total - 991

Cabal dives biomancy, divination, some if the chaos specific schools(forget the names atm), Lord accepts/issues challenges cause even if enemy deathstar counters one of your big spells he has 4++, eternal warrior, 3 wound, s8 ap2, 4 attacks base with rage. Than of course the force weapons are awesome, the blinds soak up wounds with 2 wounds each and majority WS is 5 for this star so that's nice. Only Concern I have is the lack of WC action(only 11)

As a side note I generally prefer this with a Tzeentch ally back up as well for itc with more hounds, horrors and Fateweaver and 2 heralds for a grand total of 27 WC which gives massive control in the psyker phase against other deathstars to deny their buffs, even the space wolves houndstar struggles to keep all its buffs up

Deamons
20seekers full command 240
herald on mount grimoire, level 2 on demonic 140
Herald on mount level 2 telepathy loci of beguilment 140
Herald on mount level 2 telepathy greater gift (doomstone for fun) 140
Herald on mount level 2 demonic greater gift loci of grace (move though cover) 120

Sure not much in toughness but so many rending attacks (81 @s3 at i5 & 24 @s4 at i7 on the charge) with great speed psy powers to boost the unit possible 2++ (grim & cursed) with invisibility.

As you are having a Death star vs Death star tournament. Here is my "anti death star" death star.

Nurgle herald, ML2, Exalted reward (Doomstone) = 125
Nurgle herald, ML2, Greater reward (Greater Etherblade), Greater Locus of Fecundity = 140
Nurgle herald, ML2, Greater reward (Greater Etherblade), Doomsday Bell = 145
Nurgle herald, ML2, Greater reward (Greater Etherblade) = 115

Plague Drone x9, Plaguebringer, Greater reward (Greater Etherblade), Rot Proboscis x9 = 448

Total = 973

You could drop a Plague Drone and add Grotti the Nurgling or a Palanquin as you see fit.

Don't the heralds just slow down the drones.

Not really, just involves a bit of conga lining. After all, loads of marine deathstars find room for an Inquisitor with Psychotroke grenades.
