Me and my friends had an argument recently, as he plays IG Catachcans. I think it's Cat-at-ch-can, he thinks it's Catch-can, others are 'Catch-an' and 'Cat-chan.' Your thoughts?

Cat-a-chan, or Cat-uh-chun, depending on accent.
It's just spelled Catachan, not Catachcan.

Cat-e-can (I have heard both this and cat-e-chun in audio books and video games) I also often pronounce it like ca-ta-tsjan (in which a sounds like proper a as in father)

Spelling it right generally is a good start to pronouncing it correctly. It's Cat-uh-chan, spelled Catachan.

See I thought that was backwards. I used to say Cat-uh-chan or Cat-ach-in. Wasn't until I read in a white Dwarf in like...'03-'04 that I found out that it was cat-e(h)-can. It was one of the old school dev guys that wrote an article about pronouncing things right. (There was some nerd rage in that article. lol)

An English Muffin is an English Muffin, a Muffin is a Muffin. One's savoury, the other is sweet, usually
Also Biscuits and Cookies are completely different things - I happen to bake both from time to time
I think anyone in Britain who says "wash closet" needs a slap - I've never heard that in my life

The hell's a wash closet?
And if we're talking about differences between languages, English typically has weird words within itself, like accents. I can barely understand Newcastle folk, despite living relatively close to the area.
Honestly we could talk about the differences between American and English all day really

Biscuit, not biskit. It's from the French, for "twice cooked". Cookie, on the other hand, comes from the Dutch "koek" which is a cake. You 'murcans have a lot of things stollen (heh) from the Dutch and Germans.

Automatically Appended Next Post: Pst you will sound less like a German when you use the word koekje, and you will not be getting cake if you want cake just ask for taart or vlaai you might even go forr cake if you are into pound cakes.

What? A Chimera is a creature from Greek Mythology - a lion with a goat's head on its back, and a tail that ends with a snake's head. GW didn't make the word up. Also, its fairly commonly referenced in TV shows, video games, fictional novels etc.

I highly doubt anyone on Dakka isn't aware of the source of the word. I was talking about oddly pronounced words.
I've heard Ky-mer-ah, Chim-er-ah, Kim-arah, Chi-mear-ah and Chim-e-ah.

Cat-ah-chan.
"Chimera" has always been properly pronounced "Ky-mair-ah"... it's Greek in origin, in which the letter C is always a hard C. In fact, the letter doesn't exist in the origins of the language, as it can be phonetically replaced by a K or an S. C is a stupid letter, in general.

English has a few letters that others don't have - and their only purpose seem to be to duplicate the sounds of other letters. However this is what you get when it's a language assembled by committee.
C: Soft it's an "s", hard it's a "k".
Q - does nothing that K can't do - and when combined with "u" in english, duplicated "Kw".
X: Probably a leftover from latin hybridised greek or perhaps French. In English, it doesn't do anything that "z" or " ks" doesn't do already.

There's never much point trying to standardise words you say in English, it just never works. English breaks more rules it sets down than Magic: The Gathering

Yup, English, the language where the exceptions outnumber the "rules" ...
The one we all get taught in school ...
" I before e except after c" - except there are more exceptions to this rule than their are actual uses.

Pronunciation will always be difficult, but I do draw the line when people pronounce a word in completely different syllables. No offense to anyone in this thread, but "catch-a-can" is a good example. That's simply not how it's spelled - at all.
Cat - a - chan (how it is spelled per GW)
Catch - a - can. (not how it is spelled)
No. So, as long as we're not inventing syllables or bordering on dyslexia you can pronounce it however you wish. On a personal note prior to reading this thread I'd only ever heard this word pronounced as "Cat-uh(ah)-chan(chen/chin)". I'd never heard the cat-ah-can pronunciation.
