Hello all,

Burning of Prospero is out soon and I already have my preorder. So that means I'll have 30 Mark III tac marines on my hands. I'm still debating on how to paint them up. I have always been a fan of successor chapters because there's lots of schemes you just don't see being used much and it's nice when there's good background on them too. I've been reading up on some lore and I have gotten some conflicted info. I've read that older marks of power armour rare and treated like relics while other sources say that certain aspects of Mark III and other marks are still popular among chapters and stuff like that. So for me that begs a very important question, would older versions of power armour make sense for successor chapters? Would it have maybe been fairly common among the 2nd founding or would it be mostly MK IV and newer? What about a more recent founding such as the 25th? Any thoughts on the topic is appreciated. Evidence of MK III armour being used by a newer successor chapter would be even MORE appreciated!

The good news is yes you can use them.

According to the lore and feedback I have received, MK III is still use for ship boarding actions only.
The older marks are kept as relics.

MK II's wore out and loyalist forces that either didn't receive enough of MK IV or couldn't maintain them, had to use what would become known as the MK V.

MK V ceased use as soon as MK VI was made available, and then the gradual transition to MK VII.

So unless one of the Legions managed to keep enough MK II's laying around or MK IV's, the second founding would contain them, later chapters would have less so. If I had to put my money on it, I would consider that the Ultramarines Legion and it's successors had the highest chance of existing MK II's and MK IV's still in stock and granted to successors and so forth. While chapters like the Blood Angels and Imperial fists would have a handful of them left or less.

Apart from the Red Scorpions that still manufacture MK IV, it seems that all chapters have the capabilities to manufacture the older MK's but choose not to and use the most modern sets.
So you can justify using MKIII through to 999.M41 for any chapter. The rest is sketchy.

on a question like this I always look back to the Dark Angels Codex, which has their successor chapters have the potential to have jet bikes and such (and Lots of Termy armor), so don't think old armor would be out of the question I would think.

Thinks Palladium books screwed the pooch on the Robotech project.

The Romanian Army stopped the Imperial German Army during the Great War with one-shot black powder rifles. Sometimes you can't afford new gear, and the old stuff, while not optimal, still works.

It's stated in several places that old MKs of power armour is still extensively used, especially among older and certain other Chapters. Red Scorpions love the ol' MKIV, Carcharadons love MKV, Raven Guard use MKVI extensively etc. However, wearing older suits is considered an honour among the modern Chapters.
