Anyone play this? What’s it like? Is it like skyrim online, where it’s a huge open world to explore with hidden stuff all over? Or more mission-based like Destiny? I’m looking for a good open world game to play, and prefer MMOs. Are they adding lots of stuff to it over time to keep things fresh?
Also is there a monthly fee to play? I was gonna get the xbox version.

I played at launch for a few weeks - wasn't bad, very pretty game, not a bad system overall.
But I can safely say that it's nothing like Morrowind/Oblivion/Skyrim in it's execution - expect traditional mmo bits when it comes to exploration/gameplay.
I've heard that it's gotten some bad press around a buggy nature and various other issues but I haven't played it recently enough to really comment.

The game is a lot better than when it first launched, however it's a lot like advertised; Elder Scrolls meets MMORPG.
Monthly is free to play.
The game uses a LotR model, where you get the base game and can play that, and then various content add-ons cost money (Imperial City, Orsinium, and Dark Brotherhood are some of the DLC add-ons currently in game). It isn't updated that regularly to be honest. They only just recently got around to finally adding the Dark Brotherhood to the game, and 6 months before that the Thieves Guild. With the release of One Tamriel they have finally announced player housing for early next year (though to be fair its shaping up to be one of the coolest player house systems I've seen in a game). Some add-ons are free for all, like One Tamriel and presumably the housing (no cost has been associated with it from what I've seen).
The maps are set like most MMORPGS. A big sand box with a lot of locations to go and visit to get experience, however they are quite beautiful with some interesting lore bits spread around. Little of it is actually hidden though. There's an occasional out of the way vista to find, but it's not really that out of the way. Each location might involve a mission, or just a specific challenge like a boss or mini-dungeon to complete. The biggest shock for Elder Scrolls players though is the class system. It's very free form (any class can technically tank, heal or DPS). You have 4 classes, each with 3 skill lines, then weapon masteries, armor masteries, and some various world and lore based things like the Undaunted (Dungeon support abilities). It can be awkward to get used to, because the Elder Scrolls games are famous for not really having classes.
The good thing about ESO is that it's fairly populated so finding people to play with isn't hard. Unfortunately MMORPG skills from other games don't translate well to ESO, so you'll have to learn how to play all over again XD Leveling becomes very dull very fast, and the skill system loses a lot of its flare before long because once you figure out how you want to build your character there's little to do but grind out the skills, and tediously acquire the proper gear and items either via loot drops or crafting (various crafting stations in the world will modify weapons and armor). The game can feel quite tedious at times, especially in places the world design lost any sense of creativity and just resorted to being like WoW (hits the Daggerfall Covenant areas the most).
That said, it's a worthwhile game, with wonderful opportunities to build a character that feels like its yours with the abilities and style you want.

The DLC's don't make up a huge amount of the game so there is still a lot to do outside of them. I'm cp70 on one character and Level 40 on two others and I rarely do stuff in the DLC with the exception of the Imperial Sewers. I have helped kill a World Boss in Orsinium and that is about it. Oh, Group Finder sent my group to on of the new Hist Dungeons once.

Tried it out last night. I made a lizard named Sleestaks. Up to level 6 or 7. Seems pretty fun and still a lot of Skyrimness to it. I went with a Nightblade but decided to stick to bows, I remembered them being pretty uber in Skyrim. I like how you can crank up the level of a skill then unlock a more powerful version. Is there a way to reset your skills/points and start over if you want to change your spec later in life?

Yes. Usually in the second "big" zone for a faction's area there's a major city that has a church where you can reset things.
You'll be around level 20-24 by the time you get there depending on how much of a completionist you are.

I noticed when I got the game it wanted me to link it with an elder scrolls online account.. does that mean you can play on PCs or consoles together? I went to the site on my PC and it still said buy now, rather than download now.. do you just have to buy the software on the PC side to play on a PC, and the console character I have would be there for me to play on a PC too?

Have they removed the Fiery Grip ability from the Dragon Knight Ardent Flame? Its the one that sends out a chain and either pulls a target to you or pulls you to the target. I came back after several months and it looked like it had been removed, it wasn't on my hotbar and I couldn't find it in the class skills.
If it really has gone, thats gonna completely sap my enjoyment out of the game. I loved that ability and its the reason I chose Dragonknight, its a lot of fun teleporting around like a magic berserker.

I'm still sticking with my argonian nightblade archer. I'm level 15 now, got a nice combo going. I start with a stealth bow shot, then do the lifesteal dot, then the bow poison shot, then the bow knockback when they get in my face and I pretty much just cycle those 3 and when something is about a quarter of health left I hit em with the assassin's bade and they're done. If I get more than 1 mob, I got the ultimate that stuns and does even more lifedraining.
Been wondering lately if it would be better to focus more.. like do all bow abilities? assuming those skills would level up a lot faster that way?

In ESO you want to spec your character to fit either group dungeon content, or solo content.
In dungeons you have Damage Dealers, Healers and Tanks. The first two can cross over, but a damage dealing Tank is a bad Tank in this game (with my own tank I'm a slight crossover with a Healer in that I spam group buffs). Damage Dealers are the most common, and whilst optimal for solo content and necessary for groups, you'll find it difficult to pick groups through the automated finder as so many people fulfill that role. Healers and Tanks find groups almost instantly. However, if you're going to go the Healer route a group will appreciate a good Healer with can do some damage over a Damage Dealer who can't heal very well. The later works for good groups, but you'll find that many groups need the safety net of a Healer or Tank (otherwise the whinging starts).
For solo play / PVP then maximizing damage is your one goal. 16K is the lowest health I'd go to, most stick to 20K, but you're going to be a glass cannon and need to invest in drain skills and dodging. Currently the meta for damage dealing is dual wielding daggers and stacking on critical chance for Nightblades or taking a Destruction staff. I've never been a fan of bows myself for damage, though people run them with a 2-handed weapon for the damage over time effects.
With my own Vampire Nightblade I'm wearing all Medium armour (all set items geared to weapon damage/ stamina) and carrying two sets of swords. Their jewelry is all Agilty set with stamina and damage buffs. All their attribute points is in Stamina, and their Champion Points in Critical chance/ weapon penetration. I use the Warrior Stone for Weapon Damage.
That is a sub optimal build as its not critical damage focused, but I thought I'd try it out. Now, whilst obviously at this stage in the game you shouldn't be caring about that sort of thing, I would note: Weapon Damage scales off of either Magicka or Stamina. If you are using a Bow + a Staff you'll be less effective with each. This also goes for Healing. If you want to use a staff go all magic. If you want to heal, but use a bow then use the Nightblade and Undaunted skills which give out group healing - but you won't be as effective a healer as one with a staff (nor as good at healing as a Templar - who have more class skills for healing). Again, this is me talking about optimal builds.
----
Ignoring that spiel - general trips.
Begin researching items as soon as possible. Work out what type of armour and weapons you like to use and go to a crafting area. From their go to the research tab and select whatever piece you want to research. What this does is allow you to go to certain special crafting locations, and for each point you have researched in a armour or weapon type you can craft a set item which have unique effects (i.e. if you wear 2 of the same set you get +10% damage, 5 parts and you can summon a poison cloud at random, etc). Besides that every trait you research lets you craft an item with that trait, rather than relying on random loot. If you're into cosmetics then crafting also lets you choose the look of items you wear, if you meet the required researched styles and traits (its not that complex once you get your head around it).
* I stress the importance of research as the time it takes to research extra points in a particular item goes up with each piece, If you start early just picking random items you'll save a lot of time later when you're grinding towards the better unique sets (I'm sitting with week long wait times on my maxed out research timers....).
Every 30 points in Horse upgrades (from a stable) give every mount you ride a cosmetic item (A harness, saddle bags and armour). Mounts can be upgraded once a day for 300 Gold.
Find Skyshards in the world and complete the dungeons in each zone. 3 Skyshards = 1 skill point, and the random dungeons can give one two, along with special items. If its your first character you'll probably want to try a lot of things out and wind up doing a lot of crafting, thus using up your skill points. There are addons which show the location of Skyshards on the map. Some are still difficult to find, so its not massively cheating...
With the latest update you can go anywhere in the game. Personally I'd suggest playing each faction's content in order. Its necessary to complete one of the faction's main quests to reach Coldharbour; if you ever want to go there and go head to head with the big bad himself. Every area now levels to you so you'll consistent find useful items, though each zone drops its own unique set items, so you may want to head to certain ones (for instance I'm wearing a leveled up version of one of the starting zone sets).
Once you're into the higher levels, or if you find a good group, run the dedicated group content. These dungeons are marked on the map, or you can press P in game to find a random group for one. With random groups people can vary, and some may instantly kick you if you're a low level. Personally I'm not too bothered about low levels in my group, but running with 3 people who only have 1 weapon and no soul gems or potions can be a bit painful. I'd recommend at least being in the 40s for that kind of thing, but again, you can run them at any level as you're scaled to the content, its down to the players. At my point in the game its what I do 90% of the time until new content comes out.
If you want to level up ridiculously fast you can grind certain areas for enemies. These have changed in the most recent patch, but are still viable. However, you'd enjoy yourself more doing the quests and exploring. When you're at the high levels and completed all the quests, but still want to level up quickly (and don't want to do group content). Find a dead Cyrodiil PVP server where your side owns all the forts and then complete all the town quests. Because they're geared towards being located in areas rife with enemy players, they give out a ridiculous amount of exp. Of course on a dead server you can instead complete these relatively easy quests in minutes (one of them is literally "see that give 10 meters away? Go talk to him and then come back" "Here, have a million exp. Talk to you tomorrow").
Speaking of Cyrodiil, there's always PVP. If you want to go ahead with that route then pick up the Imperial City DLC. Bar being able to run the Prison and Palace dungeons in groups, you also get access to the sewers and the city itself for PVP. There's PVE content in there as well, you just need to be paranoid of enemy players killing you constantly. Typically you can find a large group of players and go all the way from your faction's base in the sewers to the center to face off against the boss there, then back out again (or if you're up to it enter enemy held territory, but by that point you'll be carrying a lot of loot, and certain items are stolen on death to an enemy player).
Depending on your platform there are mods out there. I have ones for better inventory sorting, research time tracking, a UI overhaul which shows more information, etc. They're not required, but they're quality of life improvements.

Thanks for the big post
I'm on xbox one, so I don't think I can get any mods really. What I like most is exploring, and it seems like I have a pretty massive world to explore, so I love that. I kinda played out the whole dungeon farming idea with WoW, so I'm not really into that.. but I will check them all out as I find em. I usually don't like doing the same place twice, unless I have to for a quest or something.
I just got my level up high enough to have my alt weapons, so I was thinking of going with dual wield. Right now i have 2 axes, one was blue so I picked that. I can switch to daggers if that's the best way to go. I just prefer ranged fighting
I have some magic skills but for the most part I mostly use stamina skills with my bow. I've mostly been focusing on Bow, Medium Armor and Woodworking (to make bows). How do you research items? Every time I go to that tab, everything is grayed out and says unknown.
I've been messing with all of the tradeskills, mostly just deconstructing everything I find, which probably isn't as good for the bank account, but still. I was doing cooking at first, but there are SO many ingredients, and not enough bank space, so I gave it all up and quit. I'm doing alchemy and enchanting though, starting to run into the same problem. So I just keep making stuff just to make stuff and use up things as I get em.

Group dungeons in this game are large. The public ones in the overworld are fairly quick to do, and usually have a quest, a boss and a skyshard.
For Dual wielding two axes isn't worth it. Axes apply a bleeding effect, but it doesn't stack, so having two won't do much. Melee weapons do the following:
Axe - applies bleed
Dagger - higher critical change
Mace - higher armour mitigation
Sword - higher penetration chance
A dagger or a sword will do more damage on average than an axe, as axes just apply a damage over time effect randomly. Most fights will be over before it can output more damage than the other weapon types.
Duel wielding and using a bow is (probably) viable as they both scale off of Stamina. With melee weapons you're mostly forced to fight up close. I fight with melee exclusively, but I'm the weird type who spams the dodge key and uses a speed increasing spell meant only for travelling in Cyrodiil to cross large distances so I'm too quick to be hit by AOE.
Find a crafting area, they're in most towns. On the far right of the menu is the research tab. You can select an item to research form those highlighted. You can only research a new trait if you have an item in your inventory with it. It doesn't matter what level the item is though, so you can buy up tons of low level items on the cheap to research (Nirnhoned items are always expensive however). Unknown means you don't have an item with that trait to research. I'd advise you train up your armour and weapons at the same time - that's three different crafting skills - as set items can pull from both (for instance I'm wearing about 5 sets across a dozen item slots).
Deconstructing items gives good bonuses. I'd hazard only bother with the blue or better stuff if and see everything else as that'll give the best exp and materials. At your level just deconstruct everything as money shouldn't be an issue. Use armour and weapons which is dropped from enemies till you're into the 40s, if you want. You can craft your own items too, which is what I'd advise, but there's so many dropped sets then either's viable until you hit the end game content and have to start specializing.
Oh, and as another point. Go to a guild trader and buy food. Food, not drinks. They'll buff your stats for a set period. I use 2 hour Stamina and Health food, which gives me something like 1/3rd more to those stats (the health in particular means I don't have to bother about buffing my base health as much as it takes me over the minimum health to not be one shot in dungeons).

I just went and read up on research.. since I've been deconstructing everything like mad I never had items around to research, so next time i get a big haul I'll check on research first. So, I can have 1 woodworking, 1 blacksmithing and 1 clothing research going at once? Just not 2 of the same type without a skill?
What's the deal with crafting stations out in the wilderness? Do they let you craft other special things? They all different mysterious sounding names. Or are they just there to be handy when you don't feel like teleporting home?
Is there a level max? I've seen people with levels in the hundreds.. do you just keep on leveling up no matter what? So, eventually, you could unlock like every skill point in your class?

As you level you can decrease research times and research multiple items of the same crafting type. You can't research two of the same item (i.e. swords), but can research up to a maximum of three items per craft. Unfortunately if you level Heavy Armour then you're screwed as blacksmiths also covers melee weapons, so things take ages.
Crafting stations in the Wilderness have a unique icon IIRC. When you craft there they have an extra crafting tab which displays when you have enough items with the required amount of research. If you have the item unlocked then it'll let you craft as normal, but any item created has a unique bonus, which increases as you wear more items of that same set (the same as set items dropped from World Bosses, in dungeons, given at the end of quests, etc). Set items are a requirement for late game play, as these bonuses give an edge to combat.
Oh, and as you level remember to click the + icon next to an item you craft, that improves the level. You'll need to change the material at a certain point to increase the level. As you research you unlock traits which you can apply to items if you have the required materials as well, which give another small bonus. Finally, there's the improvement tab, which increases the stats of an item. *Do not* use gold level improvement materials, or hell even purple on any items under level 50. Purple's fine after 50, but you'll be tearing through gear so often that using those is a waste. Again, *Do not* use gold level improvements on anything under 160, they're so expensive that you'll hate yourself when you reach that level for the money you burned on improving low level gear.
If you want crafted armour to look a certain way you use motifs. These drop randomly in zones, or for handing in daily quests. You can buy them from Guild Stores too. These also require materials to use, but for the most part those are cheap at Guild Stores.
...Did I mention Guild Stores? Don't buy items from merchants. "Gimme 1000 gold for a Grand Soul gem!" ...No, I'll buy 100 from a Guild Store for that price (players literally crap Soul Gems as you generate them passively as part of that skill line).
There is a max level. ...Sort of. Once you hit level 60-ish you stop gaining attribute points. At 50 you start gaining Champion Points instead. If you played Skyrim you pretty much unlock that level up menu (youknow, with the star signs). You level up with that instead after that point, which gives points to add into passive skills (i.e. 0.1% higher crit chance - not much, but you have hundreds of these points). As you gain points and apply them to the trees you unlock passive buffs at certain levels too (i.e. 120 points gives you double gold dropped from chests, or makes blocking free, etc). But yes, there is a max level, but its like 880 or something now, with it increased every patch. I gain like 5 levels for an hour or two of play.
- gear does not improve beyond level 160, but there's plans to increase that apparently. Gear costs are flat till 150. At 160 they increased dramatically, i.e 8 ore to create a chest piece going up to 150, but level 160 items can also take much, much better enchantments (i.e. ones which improve 3 stats at once, instead of just health, etc).
- Skill points after level 60 come from Skyshards, completing dungeons, completing certain quests, group activities and other random things like achievements/ using certain rare items. I wouldn't worry about skill points too much as you can respec them later in the game. On your crafting character they're important as you'll need them for those skills plus your combat ones, so try and find as many as you can (right now I have my Tank/ crafter - who has zero spare skill points and my Damage dealer - who has 40 free skill points, and that's without even trying to unlock them). You could unlock every skill, but once you learn the game you'll pick ones and ignore others, so there's no need to unlock everything, as you just won't use it all.

Cool, well I started some research last night. I found a dagger thad had the buff that increase crits and that's exactly what I wanted, so I'm learning that one now. Bows with that would be cool too. But, I've been trying out dual wield now and I really like it a lot. I think I started with bows since they were so uber in Skyrim, I could sneak around and 1-shot almost anyone. Not so much now. So I think I'm gonna focus more on dual wield now, and maybe do some respecing once I'm able and swap those bow & woodworking points for more dual wield and maybe smithing. I'll still keep the bow though, I like to pull with the bow and then switch to the daggers when they get close.

I may be late but I just noticed: Fiery Grip and Fiery Whip changed places. It isn't gone it just needs you to be 30 in Ardent Flame to unlock it.
If anyone wants a Werewolf bite let me know as I can do that.

I'm almost to 160 and they are going to up the item levels. Great. I've almost got Blacksmith and Clothier capped as well but I imagine that is going to go up and spite me as well.

The current damage meta is for dual wielded daggers on one bar, and a bow on the other, with medium armour set for critical hits. I'm going to try swapping to this myself, but the issue with the most optimal build for that is that most of the items are rare drops.
My current armour and weapons sets are all dropped sets, not crafted, as I wanted really specific buffs (i.e. 2 of one set to give one stat, 3 of another, etc). That was only a day of farming to find all of that though. The issue with farming is that if you want different sets you'll wind up of items from multiple sets which take up the same slot. The best sets in the game right now drop from the hardest content, and they're both have infrequent drop chances and are also randomized (hey I got a Restoration Staff finally, oh, it has a damage buff...). I'd love to have some Sharpened Maelstrom Daggers, but I don't want to spend an hour of my life running a solo arena only to come out with double-handed axe, if that...
Oh, and personally I have no issue with bows, I'm mostly irked by people who use them exclusively, and badly at that. I take two bars of the same weapon type as it lets you use more of its skills. The meta for dual-wield on one bar and a bow on the other is aimed at using damage skills exclusively, and having your regeneration based on armour buffs. My build has all my damage on one bar (which amounts to 3 skills - area effect, damage over time on one enemy, and execute attacks to kill enemies under 20% health), with every other skill being a buff. ...I'm not really one of the types of guys who can pull off spamming 10 different skills in 2 seconds (though saying that, I did check my buffed base damage in a group dungeon last night and I was pulling 5.5K ...for an AOE attack).
As for item levels. Nothing official has come out about increasing them beyond 160. Crafting materials for beyond that level were datamined months ago, but the same goes for a lot of content which has taken ages to make it into the game (Vvardenfell anyone?). Given the massive jump in crafting material requirements from 150 to 160 I'd hate to see what its like for anything higher. If you want level 160 gear you'd be better off for just doing veteran dungeons, it drops commonly there (though that has its own RNG, both with finding a decent group willing to do a specific dungeon, and that even with the high set drop rates with the latest patch you'll still need to run the place a few times. I'm still looking for a full Kothringi set from the latest DLC).

I've never payed attention to the meta. My main is an Orc DK that uses Dual wield on one bar for single target and Two-Hander on the other bar for AoE. My other is a pyro Dark Elf DK (wasn't planned but so much fun) with Fire Destruction staff on one bar and Dual Wield on the other. That is for leveling up so later it may be different types of Destro Staff depending on situation. Now my NB is DW/Bow but mostly for single target/AoE again.
I rarely use daggers on any of them. Axes/ sword for single weapon and really anything for great weapon.
I am thinking of making the Orc a tank though, but I have to grind out a bit more in Cyrodil to get Caltrops before I do that.

Is there any point in giving a DK Tank Caltrops? Maybe a DPS, but as a DK tank you should already have Chains and a taunt slotted, which function the same.
With my tank I chain in all the mobs in a group then individually taunt them all. By this point most will be dead anyway, as from their the DPS can use AOE to quickly kill them. Caltrops just snares enemies and does damage right? The damage isn't something I'd be too worried about as a Tank, as that's not your role, and instead you could be slotting another skill which provides group buffs which'll increase the DPS' damage (a percentage increase to this will output more damage than a flat output from yourself as they'll have a higher base damage).
That and Tanks aren't really suited for Cyrodiil. You'd sit there all day soaking damage, but the attacker would heal through your own low output. The game's geared towards damage dealers, whilst Tanks are kind of relegated to just running dungeons and trials (Healers can cross spec with damage at least). I ran through the game with my first character as a Tank and it took me ages. I go back as a Damage Dealer and I've gone from 1-50 in a few weeks. ...Just a pity then that the game also gives out rewards based on damage output, rather than the amount of healing done, damage blocked, etc. Probably why in group finder Healers and Tanks find groups instantly, whilst DPS have a wait time of an hour plus.

Caltrops helps sustain AoE hate, plus it looks cool. I wouldn't tank in Cyrodil either, but getting Assault to 6 is the only way to get Caltrops and it is just one more level.

I'm reading up on the latest DPS meta. Hmn, I think I had it right with my last build.
Weapon Damage/ Weapon penetration is a fixed stat, so worse off than the percentage based stats like Weapon Critical.
I had swapped over to a build based on the former. Whilst in the character stats screens I have a high base damage, this does not become excessively higher than this. A character however who's based around critical hits, whilst having a lower visible damage, whilst compounded with buffs, will output more damage.
So... In other words, back to grinding for set items. I'd like to have the Trial based sets, but I left all my guilds ages ago when I stopped playing, so I'll need to find some new ones for those.
I'll need to starting learning a bow (I have no research at all for those) and grinding Alliance War Assault for caltrops. I hate leveling Alliance skills. I suppose using a bow may be worth it as whilst I have two daggers on my second bar; I only use that bar for buffs. A bow means I could swap more damage into my rotation. The problem is, the high tier builds are based around everything going right, which well, running with public groups is not always a guarantee.

So I got my first horse last night, the generic one that costs 10k gold. What's better about the ones that all cost 40k gold? Are they faster? I was thinking maybe they sprint longer but my horse never stops sprinting even when his stamina bar goes all the way down. Or is that a bug?
Up to level 21 now. I just found a book for crafting I think ancient elven styles, but it says I need to have at least level 8 in one of the skills in woodworking, smithing or tailoring. Those are all a 2 at the highest right now. Guess I got my work cut out for me.

Horses are all the same, no matter the cost. Its just how they look what's different. Horse stats come from talking to a stable master and paying gold to improve them. These stats are persistent across all mounts, so you an change your mount, but have the same stats and cosmetic changes.
Re: Stamina. As long as you hold down the key, yes they sprint indefinitely for convenience. However every time you hit the key there's a boost, and a horse's stamina left IIRC has an effect on its damage mitigation. There's a skill under Alliance War Assault which buffs player speed if you need it.
Heh, crafting motif books drop randomly in certain areas. The rarer motifs don't drop as whole books, but as individual pages. You can find these in random chests or enemies, or as quest rewards. Dungeons have a higher drop rate, but it varies by motif. Motifs are only cosmetic, though you'll need the required crafting material to create them in the first place. So whilst a suit of Dwemer armour is no different from another race's, it'll cost you much more for the bragging rights.

I started a Guild for some new guys to play in ages ago. I was teaching them the basics. Came back after a few months and it had like 70 people.
IIRC Guild Requirements are just have 4-5 people. Buying a guild store/ uniforms, etc are based on membership and the amount of gold in the kitty. If its just an informal thing though its not as if that kind of stuff really matter.
Though Guilds are based on servers. The EU and US servers are separate, so actually finding enough people to start one might be a challenge.

Are your accounts shared among platforms too? I had to create an ESO account even though I'm playing on xbox live. So could I get in a guild with normal PC players or even PS4 players even though I'm on an Xbone?

Nah, you need one for each platform and server.
