I'm running a unit of 10 Long Beards in the Grudgebound War Throng Battalion and am looking for opinions on how to equip them. Should I give them the Ancestral Ax and Gromril Shield combo (the shields allowing them to re roll all failed save rolls in the combat phase if they don't run or charge) or give them the Ancestral Great Axe (hits on a 4+, wounds on a 3+, -1 Rend)

whats the rest of the force look like? what role are they playing (I didnt get any of them, but am relying on ironbreakers myself)

I've got 30 warriors, 20 thunderes, 10 crossbow, and 10 long beards plus iron drakes, iron breakers and hamerers along with a warden king, slayer, and rune lord. They are backed up a cannon and a gyro bomber

I guess they are semi elite infantry. I intend to use the warriors as my tar pit so I guess these guys will be backing them up (I've played exactly 0 games of AoS, so I'm just kind of wining it here )

You can have both the great weapons and the shields, which is the most optimal option. Also, I'm sorry to say it but Dispossessed are sub-par in Matched Play. Their infantry cost a lot of points compared to what they do and there isn't a lot else they can pull from. Good luck though, and if things seem bad remember it may just be the army not you.

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

Going with the great weapons then. Thanks for the heads up, I've never been one to get twisted up with "winning", my life time tournament record is abysmal. I'm going with Duardin because a huge chunk of the models were free (free minis are the best minis) and frankly I've always loved dwarfs

I have a night goblin force I would love to lead against that (mostly spear and bow armed, but have some spider riders as well) I also have a large duardin dispossesed force (similar build but i have miners and some other stuff added in as well) where do you play? (I realize you havent gotten a fight yet, just curious where)

I've also got a goblin army (unbuilt) I, trying to re create the Fall of Bugmans Brewery campaign.

I live in Austin and I will definitely be able to get a game around here. I'm taking the dwarves to LVO because I make bad life decisions and feel the need to paint up a brand new army for a game I've never played before but feel that I will like

Thought you were near Denver, because of the location, you are around Austin Texas?

Rumour has it there is coming support for the duardin, at some point. Steamforged duardin will have iron golems.

How dispossed, fyreslayers, ironweld arsenhol and steamforged will get along is anyones guess.

With love from Denmark

Yeah, dispossessed are definitely going to suffer in competitive play, but i play regular casual games with a friend and he is pretty good about keeping it balanced. Personally i would not take 10 quarrelers pretty much ever. Without the 20+ bonus, thunderers are better in every way, and if you are thinking close combat, just take the cheaper warriors for better stats. Idk how things are modeled or what you are interested in buying, but for the same points cost i would take 20 quarellers and 10 thunderers, because the 20+ benefit is mathmatecially more helpful to Q than T. Or I would rather split the 30 man warrior unit to fill out the battaliin requirement and put those 120 pts to use elsewhere. The warriors do get a good bonus for 20+ but realistically i have never seen them do magnificent damage. They are good at surviving (if they have shields and are using them) but in general i find the ranged units do most of my damage. Also keeping stuff back to counter charge works well. A unit of 10 hammerers that all get to attack first can be a nasty amount of unexpected damage.

As for your original question, based on the weird wording, longbeards technically do not even have to be equipped with shields to be able to shieldwall. So great weapons are by far the better choice if you are playing rules as written. Personally i went with hand weapon and shield because i liked the way it looked better, lol

for us without points, I would pretty much bring it all. and look for an opponent with as big a force (I always have several armies I bring) but go for looks over substance, all the time

I know the crossbows suck in such small numbers but I want them for fluffy reasons plus I figure it's always good to have at least one unit that's only good for holding a backfield objective.
