So I've been working on these on and off again ever since CSM got the dinobots. I declared them finished today. 100% GW bitz apart from putty and a bit of plastic rod for the halteres. What do you think, sirs?

Those are some ugly looking bugs! In a good way. I’m not sold on the little jump jets on sticks, but the rest of it looks seemlessly awesome.

What do I think?

If I could give this more thumbs up I would be punching the screen.

Awesome insect approach and an excellent line between the biological and the mechanical.

I'm with the others, this is an excellently executed design concept. It really has that bloated insectoid Nurgle feel to it.

I'll be honest: these are friggin' grand.

I think the helldrake is one of the most ridiculously stupid models GW has ever produced - and you've turned them into something genuinely cool and fluff-appropriate looking.

Agreed, my only criticism is the wings, which don't look Nurgly enough. You could help that by Dremelling out some serious corrosion holes and pits in the wings? And obviously a good rusty grimy paint job will also help

I actually like that the wings were largely retained without modification. It makes it very obvious what model they are representing.

This. While I think they would look awesome with bug-like wings, the fact that these are the original helldrake wings makes it very clear what these count-as. If they were something else, you might think they were blight drones, flying demon princes, or who knows what.

Seconded (or thirded?) about retaining the Heldrake wings. For a really good counts-as, it needs to be recognisable as what it's supposed to be representing.

I'll also second the corrosion pits and other things to make them look more nurgly

Thank you all! To be honest, I initially wanted to do clear acrylic fly wings, but I decided to go pure GW parts to have a better chance of being featured on GW's main site... they were still doing that back when I started on these.

Someone asked for a parts list:

The main body is of course the dinobot, Maulerfiend. Legs are Maulerfield magma cutters with the nozzles replaced with Heldrake talons. Large wing set from Heldrake. Haltere intakes from Drop Pod, thrusters from Stormtalon. Butt turbine from Stormraven. Head from the Nurgle cavalry with extra eyes and spikes from the Chaos Spawn kit. The bit of hose under the rear legs from Necron flyer, and the ooze dripping out of it from Chaos Spawn.

The tricky parts:
cutting the + plug for the flight stand in the belly
filing down the wing ball sockets so the wings sit at a good angle
covering up the rest of the chimney attachment point on the body

Hope that helps!

These are absolutely gorgeous, but yeah I have to agree with the wings, they just don't sing "NURGLE" like the rest of the model. The models are very round and bloated, but the wings are sharp and jagged so its a bit of a juxtaposition. Continuing with the bloated machinery theme of the models I wonder how big chunky thrusters (like the small jetpacks on sticks but bigger) might look? Or dremel out the bits in between all the banding so they look fly like with all that metal webbing.

12/10 models though, keep up the good work!

I don't know anything about any of these models except where I've seen pictures but I think yours looks awesome =D

lots of biological contaminent on the wings would definitely nurgle-fy it imo
