Hi. Thinking of coming back to 40k after a short break from collecting and I am thinking of going for an imperial knight army. can someone please tell me what books I will need to field such a force in 40k?
I have the Dark vengeance rule book from last time I collected a force.
Thanks in advance.

Depends on whether you use FW knights or not if not then you only need the IK codex. Also bear in mind many players may not appreciate playing a full knight army

You'll need is the Imperial Knights codex and the rule book then you're good to go. All the rules you'll need (for non-Forgeworld Knights) will be found between those books.

Is that the newest rulebook? will that have the super heavy walker rules and destroyer rules as the newest knights codex lists those rules but doesn't have the explanation.

Yes the 7ed rule book has those rules. In fact you don't want the apoc book because it's from 6ed and is wrong

The fundamental issue with IK is skew more so than raw power; if you're fighting a list equipped to deal with them (not a specifically tailored anti-Knight list, just one that's got the tools to handle lots of heavy armour) they're not that weird to play.
That said I'd recommend working on another Imperial army in parallel to make learning the game, smaller games, and games against people who don't like Knights or don't want to adjust their lists to fight them easier.

I plan on making a machine cult army to ally with or as a second army after ive completed (afforded) my knights. but being totally honest the knight models look so fantastic who wouldn't be tempted to have a force of them stomping around the table. They wouldn't be my 1st choice for a competitive game but for pure fun they are a must for me.

I've had an idea bubbling away of making an Imperial Knight World army with a single Knight as warlord, with an allied Skitarii detachment.
The Skitarii would be kitbashed with Empire State Troops or Greatswords, with a dash of John Blanche-style cybernetic enhancements.
Those troops would represent a Knight World militia, retainers of the IK in question, armed with archaeotech riflles and the like

Sounds like a cool idea. think my idea will evolve over time and see where I end up. which troops appeal either in rules or just by the look of the model.
