So basically my local game shop is looking to start hosting Age of Sigmar stuff more than one little thing a year. After playing it, it's a nice little break from the books and books of rules from 40k. The main army I had planned to play is Skaven, but from the looks of it only Pestilins is all that up to date and on top of that it'll require hundreds of models to just have a small force (I seriously don't have the time for all that.)

However! I've really enjoyed the look of some of the newer Sylvenath models, especially Drycha. The problem is that it looks like our small group of 8-10 people seem to already have two others collecting trees. Now out of those 8-10 people I would regularly be facing around 4-5 and two of those are the other treefolk.

My question is, would that be at all enjoyable after a short while? It seems like there would be a huge lack of variety with such limited rules. Sylvenath vs Sylvenath sounds like it would be the same strategy vs itself. Sylvenath vs anyone else..well they would just be facing the same army over and over, wouldn't they? I'm still pretty new to the rules and armies so if anyone knows of ways to maybe mix it up a bit that would be awesome. For example, is there a way to make a very Drycha focused army? I know I'm the only one that finds her model awesome in our group.

Sylvaneth have a rather steep learning curve (unless you just spam Kurnoth Hunters) so while difficult for a newcomer I suspect they would remain engaging for quite a while if you are the type to deal with the difficulty, doubly so because Syl vs Syl is very different from Syl vs anything else.

However, it may be worth looking at Skaven again in a certain context; Clan Skryre. An all-Skryre list gets Stormfiends (3 for 300 pts) as battleline, which in the words of a wise man "have no business being battleline ever." That is to say your main issue will probably be toning your list down so it isn't too overpowered for other players (one of the most powerful lists in the game is Skryre). If you have a competitive group this will probably work fine, but if you have a more casual group then it will probably be too much.

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

It's certainly a more casual list. And yes I had looked into the Skryre option...but as you said that would be rather tough for people to deal with. While I love the magitech feel of the clan and most of the units, I still enjoy having more options when it comes to skaven. Plus I would spend all that money on the army and not have anyone to play within a month. That was another big factor in wanting a different army for now. I'll probably do Clan Skryre when they start the competitive scene...even though I might not have anyone to play in that shortly either.

Sounds like you're planning to "branch out".

One way you could make your whomping willows stand out from the rest is make some conversions and narrative battles to blend your new army with another one like pestilen skaven who've developed a new disease to make infectious zombie trees(lots of sickly green warpstone colors) or Skyre making mecha-Sylvaneths.(paint them metal with pipes and wires in their branches)

Lots of creativity potential that'll let you collect what you think is awesome and when things get competitive you can send the Sylvaneth out solo.

I actually really like that idea. I'm usually rather big on conversions as is so it could fit. But I'm still a bit worried about the play style getting dull for others.

Not sure how to really avoid that problem.

Maybe get the AoS starter set, flip some coins for who gets what army and play gang up on the guys with flesh and blood?

It's late here so I'll have to get back to you tomorrow. Maybe it'll come to me in a dream.
