Subject: Recommendations on what novels to read.

So a friend of mine is interested ever so slightlly in AoS lore and wondered which books to buy. I have a bit of an idea (ie: NOT give him Gates of Azyr and at least the first novella of War Storm, plus making him read FEC) but I'd like a bit more comprehensive input on people who have more solid pulse on people's tastes/ more solid on what readings are more popular overall rather than me.

Right my two PERSONAL favorite books is the audio drama series (The book form is mortarch of night if you don't have the cash) but I have to recommend it in audio drama form. Nagash's voice is awesome.
Since it has voice acting, music, sound effects. The second novel which is my favorite AOS novel so far is Lord of Undeath which takes place after the audio drama series.
These two books have gotten high praises from quite a lot of people.
Other honorable mentions:Call of Archaon, Warbeast, Fury of Gork and Bladestorm they were good reads if you are a chaos fan I recommend Call of Archaon. I do agree the first two books are eeeh it was more of setting up the setting. Plus setting up the current situation in the realms.
Pretty much everything is crap for everyone. Since sigmar pretty much abandons everyone outside his realm because he can't give away what he is doing so he could not answer any prayers in any form or help people in anyway.
Also one other small favorite is the sliver tower book it's how should I say? Depressing but in a good way!

Best sum-up of the Warhammer franchise!
Have you read "Hammers of Sigmar", Shinros? I'm reading that book right now and finding it quite enjoyable.
If you have read it what did you think about it?
Then I got War Storm, so I get to see what people disliked about it.

I actually liked Gates of Azyr, but then I am a bit of a sucker for that sort of thing. Even so I'd recommend it because it's short overall and lays out the basic premise pretty well. If someone didn't dislike Gates I would then recommend War Storm and Ghal Maraz since they are largely more of them same but get progressively better as they go. Those two also have the first portion of Thostos' tale that happens before Bladestorm.
I would highly recommend avoiding Hammers of Sigmar, that's the only book I did not enjoy outright. Wardens of the Evereen and Earnest make decent first-reads for someone who avoided War Storm, and are good books overall. Call of Archaeon is simply amazing in how it shows the various facets of chaos, but I would say to make sure someone understands the basics of them first; either AoS/WHFB or 40k setting knowledge works fine. Fury of Gork is solid, but I would recommend Bladestorm over Fury. The two undead novels are good, Lord of Undeath is especially great but I would only recommend them after someone has read a couple other novels first.

Road to Renown! It's like classic Path to Glory, but repaired, remastered, expanded! https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/778170.page
I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.
I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games. |

Don't get me wrong I sort-of enjoyed War Storm, which is tied to GoA (hence why I bundle them)... only that I enjoyed it for Khorgo's bits and utterly despised the annoying incompetence of Vandus and that other Celestant who I won't bother remembering. Seriously the guy is far more awesome than Vandus but the focus is more on goldy-locks mcmoron.

You are talking about Ionus cryptborn right? The lord Relictor if you are talking about him I agree somewhat I did enjoy reading about Ionus. Considering his eeer problem?

Yeah, I get what you mean. I'm having that same problem with a knights of the blazing sun novel I'm half-way through. I end up reading it in very short portions as it has a hard time holding my attention.
I'm liking Hammers of Sigmar as a quick look on some of the background and how it shows the mortals and realms suffering under chaos' reign.
I'll admit what perked my interest is the off-hand statement of a chaos general defeating a army of 3000 knights and how they had a sacred river.
