Subject: Inspiration gone, need help in trying to make a base for my Stornhorn/Thundertusk

I was so excited when I got my Icewind Assault box months ago. Sadly life got in the way again and it took me over 4 or so months to put together my Stornhorn/Thundertusk mini. It's basically looks like a Stornhorn but I love the Thundertusk's tusks, I added it to them together. It's almost done but at least it's playable to use soon and I can add the bitz here and there later. Maybe I will add them as war trophies later. Thing is, I need to put it on a base. Since I lost my inspiration but finally got myself to almost finish it, I don't know what to do for a base. I was thinking of using cork and it's like on blocks of ice on water or what not. Thing is, it's looking plain so I am asking my fellow fans here to help me out. Since I am still not familiar with the fluff and want to keep the arctic theme to it, what else can I do to base it? How can I make it look more iconic or at lease give it a bit of "wow" factor to it? What can I do for a base? What can I add to make it fluffy? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Maybe ice shards erupting from the ground around the model/in-front of its hooves
it could represent a 5-6 on the Allegiance ability

Snow looks GREAT on bases. There's no two ways about it! I use PVA mixed with Baking Soda, but the new GW snow looks good.
The Beastclaw Raiders are being chased by an everwinter so I always thought it would be cool if only the back half of the bases were covered in snow - obviously not a neat split, but more on the rear side could look cool, like the snow is following them.
Before you put the snow down, rocks and grass tufts look great with snow settled on top and the GW AoS basing kit (with the shards of ruins) should look amazing too!

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-) |

Just as a warning, I have heard from several sources that baking soda will eventually turn yellow (after several years) but I'm not sure how much humidity/sun exposure plays into that. Anyways, to add to this idea it could be worth adding snow/ice around the feet as well as creating footprints further back that have snow/ice around them, to create the classic 'burning footsteps' effect only in reverse. The fluff is basically that each group of Beastclaw Raiders has an "Everwinter" that follows them around and is essentially an arctic storm that freezes the land and is the reason they must always keep moving. Each Everwinter is a bit different though, to leave plenty of room for players to fluff their own armies.

Yeah, I had always figured if it turns yellow I would scrape it off and apply some new snow. Wouldn't take long in the grand scheme of things :-)

I used PVA glue and baking soda on my other minis. Now I am worried about it. Thanks for letting me know Ninthmusketeer, at least I have a warning now. I tried using GW new snow in a bottle or what ever it's called. Dang that is hard to use. I was able to use small amounts in good success I think, but hate to think of doing something larger with it. Any tips on how to use it in large quantities? Hmmm.... Good idea about doing half and back half as the winter coming. Not sure how to pull that off. Thanks for the idea. Automatically Appended Next Post: Got a pic it might help. I tried to do what was suggested, and when I finally found my bases, oh my. I didn't realize that the minis took up almost all the base. So now I am really stumped what to do. Here he is with his counterpart. Not sure if I should base them the same or make them different. What do you think? Here is another pic with the only other minis I have finished from Icewind Assault. Two saber cats and the leader. (sorry I keep forgetting what they are properly called). See Bottle, I took your advice and painted the ring around the leader. You are so right, it looks so much better now. Thank you very much for that. So should I try and make the bases all the same, or will the similiar look just make it look more dull now?

Got one base done. I tried to do what Bottle suggested, 1/2 and 1/2 so the front half is like grass and the back half is the winter. Didn't turn out as I hoped. I wanted the front half to be a bit brighter, but all in all, I am proud of this. Might not be the best but as you guys have kept telling me, keep at it, and do my best. I thought I would post some pics because you guys helped me out and not sure if you wanted to see the result or not.
The happy family so far.
Here are some sides now of my base with mini on.
Again I want to say thank you for your help. I really do appreciate it. I might come out as an arse on the forums but I really do appreciate the help you give me.

First off that stonehorn base is.pretty dam cool.
Yhetees are almost like half-animal half-elemental creatures of frost and snow, so I would have their bases be the iciest of all, maybe add crystals if you could. As for the mournfangs.i would have them share the green-to-snow look. If you wanted you could have it go across.units, like one unit green, one unit in between, and one unit snow.
