Hey, I'm trying to build an Iron Hands Praetor and am equipping him with a TH and a Paragon Blade with a plasma pistol holsterd on his hip. I'm open to any cool poses you guys can think of, but would appreciate some pictures (if you're willing to share some ideas, just to give me some inspiration). But I'm mainly hoping to give him some character, something that makes him unique and one of "my dudes."
So far, I plan on giving him a scar down his face across his eye and saying it was given to him by Ferrus Manus in one of his bouts of rage. He wears it proudly, and refuses to replace the eye with a bionic one as an example to his men that the flesh is not weak, and it is a part of who they are. I also intend to show him as one of the Great Crusades greatest warrior, but not the best tactician as his usual tactic is "Find the enemy warlord, cut his head off, win." Because of this anytime he slays an enemy character on the tabletop I'm going to find the models head/helmet on ebay, buy it and glue it to his base to show all the people he has killed. Has anyone got any cool ideas to add some fluff to a made up character or make the model better?

I like the idea of adding a little pile of heads on his base for every character he kills on the tabletop. It's stuff like that that really ties in the whole background fluff to the tabletop.
You could work in a little fluff story about him coming to the attention of an Inquisitor as he's suspected of being Khornate (collecting Skulls), or coming to the attention of a Khorne Daemon Prince for the same reason.
I've got a cool idea that I want to do at some point which is start off with a standard character (doesn't matter who really) and have them fully biological. Then, after each successive time they die on the tabletop make a new version with one additional mechanical replacement (a hand, arm, leg, eye etc.) so you can see the progression of the character from new recruit to grizzled veteran. Eventually, it would end up with the character being interred in a Dreadnought and a new character would take his place

'Praetor' and having been alive to know Ferrus Manus means he's 30k and pre-Inquisitors being suspicious.
Some of the coolest poses I've ever come up with were unplanned and came from cutting and reposing one hip joint on a set of PAGK legs, will see about finding you some pictures later today. Is he wearing Terminator armour, power armour, mounted...?

He is 30k, but I intend to play them as "counts as 40k" if I can find someone who's willing, I really really like the idea of him coming to the attention of an Inquisitor. I think when I play him as 40k I might use that as his back story. My only thing is that I HAVE to represent this on the model. Idk why, but I don't like it when models don't represent their fluff properly. E.g when someone plays an Iron Hand Captain and he has no bionics. Maybe I could say he dislikes the Inquisition because of this and is standing on a Deathwatch Shoulder PAd? For 30k I can say that he was there when the deathwatch was founded and fought alongside them. I also love the idea of a dreadnought-progression character, especially for Iron Hands. Would it be ok if I stole this? lol Automatically Appended Next Post: AnomanderRake wrote:

He's wearing Artificer mkIII, and thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. I do really like the Grey Knights models tbh, they are advanced power armour but seeing as how he is an Iron Hand I could maybe say he designed his own pattern of armour that was a mix of all the different types?

Yeah that's why I asked. Didn't know whether Praetor was a 30k rank or an Iron Hands-specific rank. Mainly Eldar myself what I was going to say is that if he's alive in 40k, there's no real way he'd have been alive during the heresy without warp shenanigans so that'd have to be built in...

Yeah me too on the models representing fluff thing the whole 'forging the narrative' thing is why I'm into 40k. It's the compelling background, and the ability to make that manifest in the real world on your dudes that really captures me
As for representing a feud with the Inquisition on the model I'm not sure. Are the Deathwatch allied with the Inquisition? I thought that was more the Grey Knights. If so, as you're looking at using Grey Knight bits for him anyway why not fluff it that in 30k it's his own design of armour, and in 40k it's a set of armour he 'liberated' from a Grey Knight sent to kill him? Are there any Inquisition-specific sidearms? Not overly familiar with them. If there are, you could have him with a holstered Inquisition-pistol that he also 'liberated' from the last Inquisitor sent to investigate him...
Steal away on the dreadnought idea! I've got far too many idea to do them all, and it's something that I really want to see done just make sure you post up some pics

Man you're giving me too many good ideas lol. The Deathwatch are allied with the Inquisition and as such they all have the "I" logo on their shoulder pads. I think I'll have one that has been broken in half on his base. I'm going to give him a Grey Knight helmet with a 30k Praetor plume on it to show the Inquisiton sent the Grey Knights to kill him because they thought he was turning into a demon (because of the skulls) As for the pistol, I'm not so sure, but it is something I will definetly try to find out. Might invest in some of GWs "dead space marine model" as well and but a dreadnought base for him lol.

Bonus logical explanation: there are Space Marines who have been around since the Heresy, but they're all Chaos characters who have the benefit of Warp-aided time dilation, heretical tech, and the Chaos Gods. If an Iron Hands strike force got lost in the Warp during the Heresy and popped up later that'd be a very good reason for the Inquisition to be suspicious.

One of my, if not the, main ground forces commander for my Tech Guard ( SM, IG, Skitarii, Mechanicus, Knights, and MT). was given a giant sword from a Grey knight I had left over (strapped to his back) and I tried my best (at the time) to modify his bolt pistol a little but (I wanted a giant revolver, but couldn't make it work at the time).
But There was one giant thing that I added. A Cat. crazy and silly as it sound, my commander has a pet Cat-like creature, named and based on a character that my best friend made on deviant art, that has green and yellow fur with blue markings and a (in fluff) liking for her masters alcohol rations.
I know its not the greatest of paintings and such. But I liked it (that and I personally dislike painting troops, just so tiny AND SO MANY OF THEM TO PAINT).
I want to later redo him better and move the cat model (its made of metal) to the new mini when I get to him.
That and I want to model my SM character from Eternal Crusade, a xeno/heretic slaughtering Imperial Fist who dives into combat stormbolter blasting. I got all the parts for him from various SM command squad bitz... but the legs... the bitz site was out of stock on practically all SM legs! (gah!). except Devestator, but I didn't want devastator legs on him.... I tried to go by the hobbystore and see if there was any box of tactical marines (or command squad). NOT A THING!! They had every kind of marine (at the wonderful GW prices) BUT THE ONES I WANTED!!! bleh
But in spite of this I wanted another "character"
I found an old Terminator suit with no arms or head. I put together a Skitarii armed with an Assault Cannon, Melta gun, Power Sword and Missile Launcher. Giant cybernetic body guard for my commanders that can take on practically anything with all his dakka.
I still want Tac legs for my SM guy. but that will come later.
While they are not infantry models. Every single tank has a name (and its extensively customized). There is no one tank alike in the entire 90+ armored vehicles under my command. Sure Leman russ chassis, or chimera chassis and so on. But beyond that, each is different from the last.
My Knights are all different too!

Ah I'd forgotten about the 'I' on Deathwatch shoulder pads. That'd be perfect

Brilliant idea if the 30k character got lost in the warp during the Heresy and popped out sometime around 40k, it would justify using the same character. Plus, it would garner even more attention from the Inquisition...

Hah I really like that. I'm a fan of adding animals to 40k. Helps expand it slightly beyond the 'only war' lens. Plus, it's really cool that it's based on something from your best friend. Nice touch
Personally, I'll be making an HQ for my exodites with a little 'dragon' pet using a critter from one of the old metal Lizardmen Jungle Swarms.
