So I've run into a bit of a problem recently. While growing my Alpha Legion force, I've mostly picked up things I've got for cheap, units I like aesthetically, or units I thought were a decent choice, rather than having a proper plan. I dropped getting much in the way of power armour or TDA, as it really struggled competitively since the arrival of grav. This resulted in eventually running the Unending Host due to the CSM codex being utterly clown-shoes-on-ears-stupid to portray my Alpha Legion - a small allied contingent of Alpha Legionnaires and massed hordes of Renegades, in addition to a small force of Fallen Angels, and mostly unpainted Red Corsairs and Thousand Sons Sorcerers.

I like the Alpha Legion's flexibility in 30k; depending on the mission and how I organise my force, I can potentially have Infiltrating Fast Spartans, Drop Pods full of Tank Hunting Support Squads etc. With the release of the Legions supplement, I want to try playing the Alpha Legion with their new Alpha Legion Insurgency Force. However, I think that even with the new Legion rules, I'm being pigeon-holed into playing 5th edition Rhino Rush. I've extensively used Infiltrating Chosen with permanent Shroud with Cypher from the Fallen Champions formation before, and only once did they make it into CC without Invisibility. I can Infiltrate a Rhino with Chosen now, but the lack of Assault Vehicle just means I'm going to get gunned down, WWI-style. I could take a Dreadclaw as a DT for a normal squad of Chosen, which seems like an alright option for a single squad, but it's expensive, both in £ and points (10 Chosen with a Dreadclaw and no upgrades clocks in at 290pt). This feels extremely expensive when I compare it to what the SMs can do with Sternguard Vets, Grav-cents etc, though a Shrouded Dreadclaw isn't too bad T1.

Mindveil and Drakescale Plate are both seemingly tailored for a deathstar or Daemon Prince, I could try making a deathstar with Chosen (or Terminators) and some HQs, and dropping them in a Spartan or a Kharybdis in an Alpha Legion CAD (as otherwise I can't deploy inside). It's a massive tax to take an extra CAD just for this though, with the units not even benefiting from the Alpha Legion Insurgency Force rules. Regardless, the Chosen in a Spartan lose Infiltrate as it won't be a DT.

Changing my Unending Host to use them as a Lost and the Damned Auxiliary choice in an Alpha Legion Insurgency Force seems obvious, but ends up being more expensive, and with worse rules, less firepower, and less flexibility than as an Unending Host. Additionally, I think the Cult Uprising rules better portray the Word Bearers' or Iron Warriors' use of Cultist rabble than the more elite and organised Alpha Legion operatives.

So I end up kind of stuck with how to design a power armoured force. My meta is semi-competitive, so there's quite a bit of grav, Riptides, War Convocations etc., so I need some half-decent choices to stand a chance, such as Cyclopia Cabals.

As far as models for an Alpha Legion Warband, I have
10 CSMs
~100 MKIV, 20-30 painted
MKIV Commander
10 Cataphractii Terminators
Cataphractii Primus Medicae
Cataphractii Captain from BaC
Dark Apostle from BaC
3 DiscoPredators (Lascannon + Lascannon sponsons)
Kranon converted to have a bolt pistol
DV Chosen 2 Dreadnoughts (FW Dreadnought with Reaper Autocannons and Missile Launcher, plus the old metal one with a full array).
5 MKIVs with Autocannons (Havocs)
A company and a half of Renegades (see below)

A lot of this is 30k stuff which I don't think fits that well with the 40k CSM aesthetic, but it can at least form a base.

In addition, these are the allied forces:
Spoiler:

Renegade Guard:
150 Renegade Guard (Mix of old metal, DV Cultists, and IG/Marauder/Catachans), plus plasma, flamers, and heavy stubbers.
3 Rogue Psykers

Strongly considering getting Wyverns and/or Rapier Weapon Batteries, and maybe some heavier stuff.

Fallen Angels:
Cypher
Fallen Angel Librarian
20-odd converted DA Veterans and CSMs armed to the teeth and magnetised for plasma, melta, power weapons etc.

Red Corsairs:
Huron
4 Helbrutes

I was going to pick up the Start Collecting box to make a Mayhem Pack and give them some IA13 Legacies of Ruin upgrades, but I'm not sure if I can run that particular formation as part the new Warband FOC. Also, I'm thinking of running a Gorepack formation, but it's not a priority.

Thousand Sons:
Handful of old metal Sorcerers
BoP Ahriman
Metal Ahriman

I'm gonna get some of the new Rubrics and maybe Scarab Occult and Exalted Sorcerers eventually, but not a priority.

Based on this, does anyone have any ideas for making a semi-decent Alpha Legion list using the Legion tactics?
