Thinking about changing my company colors on my Mary Sues to try to make them a little different. Kind of wish would have done my own colors and called them a successor chapter but that ship has sailed I already have to many horseshoes and blue and white on everything. So back on topic I was thinking about changing the shoulder trim. I stared out 2nd because I liked the color scheme but now I'm thinking 5th (black) or maybe 4th (green). I'm not a fan of the red so ruling that out. Also thought about mixing colors company 6-9 and make it a reserve force I never heard of anyone doing that.
What have you seen the most and what do you think looks the best? Also if anyone can give any background/fluff on the company's that would be helpful. Thanks!

My friend has his from the 3rd company (red), and it's nice to see something other than gold / yellow, but it is quite a contrast.

I've seen green done well on the internet - it's different enough from the blue to be noticeable (the problem 9th has) without being glaring (the problem 3rd has).
Black, I can't seem to find many examples of, and of those they don't look terribly inspiring, but YMMV.

As for reserve companies, this is something I've put thought into (despite not playing Ultra's) - if you want three devastator squads in your army (for example), then one (technically) needs to be from another company. This could be an easy way to pick out individual squads (i.e. you won't get your 4th company tacs mixed up with your 9th company devs) but limits you in how much you can mix-and-match equipment / loadouts between games. Technically you're limiting yourself in that way as soon as you put squad numbers on the pads, but you can get away with that easier than shoulder trims. There are ways round it (magnets, several 'spare' marines waiting in the wings, etc.). It's also worth thinking about for units of Assault Marines - since you can potentially have both units of AM and bikes and speeders in the same list, and they're all technically assault marines, doing the bikes and speeders in a different company from the regular AMs is a way to avoid "doubling up".

If your inverted Omega icons aren't transfers/painted you could always pain them a different colour and reskin your marines to a successor chapter (like how Crimson Fists use the same icons as Imp Fists but they paint over them.

Do you really need to be cannon though? I like it when people alter the chapter slightly. Maybe you can darken the blue on your guys, give them a more night-ops look to shake them up a bit.
