Points are set usually at 1000, 1500, and 2000.

1000 seems to be a good level for pick up games.

FWIW from my personal experience I don't see 1500 very often, mostly 1000 and 2000 points games.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games. |

We play 1000 to 1500 pt games.
In particular we played 1500 pts in a league and it worked quite well.

I think it completely depends. I am of the mindset that a thousand points works really well but because of how AOS points are I also tend to argue that you cannot treat them as rigidly as you wouldn't 40K because going over slightly which can include up to in your case 60 points is not very easy to fix to go under so I think you need to have a lot more leeway as long as it's obviously not being abused. This is for regular games of course in tournaments I could see being more anal about it.
Typically the 1000 1500 and 2000 points are good baselines with 2000 probably being the intended regular size

@Wayniac in this case it's quite simple to arrange the list so it fits within 1000 points. Scatch the khorgorath or a unit of bloodreavers.

Exactly in a case like that I think it should be done but there are a lot of cases where you can't or dropping say a unit from 20 to 10 is too great A Drop in effectiveness

There's the typical generic points brackets as stated above but if the games are among friends make the cap whatever you all agree on.

I play 1000 points and find it to be fast and fun. I'm trying to get some painting done to play larger games of 1500-2000 points though.
