In the HH book "Scars" a Terran recruit admits he is desperate to join the then Luna Wolves, and despairs that he must now join the elusive White Scars after only finishing 6th in his class. However, he is happy he doesn't have to join Angrons legion of butchers or the boisterous Space Wolves. This got me thinking, what Legions were considered "upper tier" and people wanted to join and what were considered "lower tier" with hardly anyone wanting to join? I'm just asking for personal opinions here For instance, I know if it was me I would have not wanted to join the Raven Guard, Alpha Legion, Night Lords or White Scars as I consider their "ways of war" dishonourable. The "upper tier" would of consisted of Ultramarines, Dark Angels or Blood Angels as they were amongst the most celebrated, fought honourably and were champions of the Imperiums ideals.

I mostly agree with your choices. I'd also throw Iron Warriors in with the unwanted and the Word Bearers and Emperor's Children in the wanted, as both of these legions were considered highly respected among the human population, even if there was less respect from other legions.

I'm also not so sure the Ultramarines were as respected in M31 as they were in M41. Sure, they were the biggest legion and most of Ultramar loved them, but if your goal as an up and coming recruit is glory and renown, you're unlikely to find it as an Ultramarine.

The Emperor himself held the Ultramarines as exemplars and Horus considered them a threat, so there'd be plenty room for glory.

I agree that the Imperial Fists would be way up there among the most respected Legions. And even though they are probably more respected in M41 than they are in M31, I'd still put the Ultramarines up there as well.

As for the bottom of the list, I'd be putting the World Eaters. They may have been more respected when they were still the 'War Hounds' (i.e. prior to the rediscovery of Angron), but I don't know enough about them to say.

The least popular would be:

Death Guard
World Eaters
Thousand Sons
Iron Warriors
Space Wolves

Ultra-Ultramarines are a great idea.

Well, I have only read the fluff in the FW black books ind it indicates that the recrutes to a legion wer drwan from certain territories. So a guy from North Africa could only join thr Ultramarines or IF. If the guy comes from Sibiria - DA or IF. And so on. So I don't think there was actualy much choise in the beginning, besides all legions used the same tactic back then. The fighting styles came much later and after the Primarchs were discovered the recrutes were almost entirely drawn from there new homeworlds.
