I use yellow a lot and it is a pain (if my art history is correct it is because yellow pigments are weak and translucent) . Your yellow is thick and gunky looking. Try a white primer, then Averland Sunset, then a few coats of thin thin thin yellow on top of it. Use a yellow wash to get a nice transition and shading from the non-yellow parts. Time is the price to pay for a good yellow.
Krylon was making a "chalky" (aka extra matte) finish spray that I have used to prime some guys in non standard colors. Not sure if they have yellow, but that might be an option too.

the trick to painting yellow is simply prime white. you can "stain" the white primer yellow with almost watery levels of yellow paint and avoid that problem all together

I have to agree, spray and wash (or spray yellow and dip if you need to).

Thanks for the advice guys, but that's actually how I painted them. I sprayed them white, did multiple coats if thinned yerial yellow, and painted the Metallics black then silver, followed by a wash. I think it might look a bit thick as the spray I used left a bit of a texture. I stripped them but it was a pain to get it all off.
Edit-I went back and took a look, and the gunky texture is from the primer. Which is a pain as I based all the tactical marines in it. Oh well, back into the stripper they go!

I have to agree, the Imperial fist's armour is not very smooth, and his face is somewhat messy aswell, but the custodian looks great.

What kind of primer do you use? I'm wondering if there was something there... I'm confused at how your Custodian came out very smooth, but the IF is a little gunky looking.

I primed the fists with army painter white, and the custodian with a flat black from ACE hardware. The army primer left a very definite texture on the fists. So I soaked them in some stripper, but I couldnt get it all off. I'm gonna throw the rest back in the stripper and see if I cant get the residue off.

Try using 75% alcohol to strip stuff, most primers come right off in a few mins. If that doesn't work, try soaking them again and then rubbing them with dish soap immediately after taking them out. This has always worked for me, and it works equally well on plastic, resin and metal minis.
