Alright, so after a LOOOONG break (End Times was the last time I played, though I picked up a couple of deals right when WFB was squatted) I've decided to get back into Fantasy flavoured Warhammer. The two armies I still have a lot of are Chaos Warriors and Empire. I'm leaning more towards playing a Tzeentch heavy Slaves to Darkness army. I have a decent core (30 Warriors, 10 Knights, 40ish Marauders) but is this actually going to get me anywhere in the game? A friend from work has a built up Sigmarine force which is much newer and more powerful. I'm planning on picking up a bunch of Tzeentch stuff when it drops in the new year. Should I even bother using what I've got or is it essentially useless now?

Yes actually, the Tzeentch Slaves of Darkness are going to be bolstered by the new Tzeentch Battletome, which features Slaves of Darkness Tzeentch alongside Arcanists and Daemons.

Alright, just wanted to make sure I wasn't wasting my time painting up the old Chaos Warriors. Christmas bills will be consuming my paycheck until mid-January so I'd like to at least get some painting in!

What about vanilla slaves to darkness?

Vanilla? Undivided? I honestly have no clue.

Yeah undivided. I'm in somewhat the same boat as the OP and I was wondering if undivided StD were viable.

To be blunt there's not much given to those who are undivided, several units only get a benefit when having a mark (Chaos lord on daemonic mount for example), and only a few have a benefit from going godless which would be the Warshrine and Daemon Prince, with the Warshrine's undivided ability not granting any extra advantage to unmarked like the Marked variants do.

That isn't to say they aren't VIABLE however, but you will be denied some fun little extra options and synergies, and many units inherently don't get benefits from being marked to begin with.

Honestly undivided is being pushed to the side. Lore wise the chaos gods don't want to share followers. Hence undivided now means 1. they have not notcied you yet or 2. you are not good enough to warrant attention.

If you check Archaon's everchosen battletome he has dedicated warbands under him one of each god that serves him. The varanguard are also not undivided either.

The only person who successfully has done it is Archaon since he is the everchosen.

Hence why rule wise being undivided you don't get the extra goodies. Even the chaos barbarian in the sliver tower in the novel he is in the process of finding a god he does get one though.

They can be made competitive.

There big advantage is they have high averages, which can be used to counter any tactic and are a solid base for any chaos army. If you start playing your opponents game (his strong point) you will be probably done for..
I played them pure (only slaves) as a fast hitting melee list, concentrated around knights with glaives and using warriors to defend objectives.
Slaves to darkness can take on almost any army.

To go really high level competitve, you can add in other factions like tzeentch daemons and arcanites to make up for the lack of shooting in the army, and all the gods have a faction that can be added daemon and mortal making the army more specialized.

Slaves to Darkneds Undivided doesn't have nearly as much fun as Khorne, Nurgle or soon Tzeentch. Khornergy especially is through the roof. Chaos Chosen improves StD in ways the other mortal followers can't so they are wirth looking into.

With love from Denmark

Slaves of darkness are worth it, their core unit, Chaos warriors are pretty freaking meaty. 2 wounds 4+ 5++ is not to shabby, Synergyse them with Khorne and they can be scary.

As said, make them tzeench and you got your self a strong unit, but in order to make them shine you really need a warshrine to get the blessings on them. With Tzeench marked they can reroll all save throws.

To many unpainted models to count.
