As we get close and closer towards the 40k end times at the pace of a blind turtle going in the opposite direction, what do you think GW's next franchise will be?
Will it be the same case with WHFB where it bridges into another franchise (Age of Sigmar)?
Or will they just end 40k entirely and just make a completely new IP?

40k will remain in existence. It will not get the AoS treatment.

It may get rules similar, but they wouldn't just restart the universe as they had for AoS at least.

AOS was likely a test on product that wasn't doing great to begin with. 40k is GWs bread and butter and I doubt they would change it significantly.

Uhh. I don't know. The last IP that GW tried was LotR, and that was, what, 15 years ago? Automatically Appended Next Post: Verviedi wrote:40k will remain in existence. It will not get the AoS treatment.
You do know that AoS is just WHFB by a different name, right?

But it isn't. Sure they have the same units/characters (to an extent), but as far as fluff goes they may as well be different franchises. Kind of like Star Trek and Star Wars. Similar technology, completely different storyline.
Anyway, I think Verviedi was referring to the Universexplosion.

Lorewise, the only similarities are the races. The Realms are a really interesting concept, and there are cool fluff elements (living Mortal Engines-like cities). I can actually enjoy the AoS lore, where the WHFB lore was a tad generic for my tastes. Pretty much the only things I don't like in AoS are the Stormcast models. They're a bit boring imo.

You ever look at the changes in WH40k lore between Rogue Trader and 7th edition?
Not very similar, the two. But they're both WH40k, aren't they?

You are right, they are different titles under the same banner, but AoS isn't WHFB in a similar fashion. Rogue Trader is set in the same universe as 40k, as different as the fluff is, but AoS isn't in the same Universe as WHFB. There isn't a world map, but the 8 Realms. There isn't a Lorthern or Ulthran, but the Fire Realm and the Metal Realm.

Well for one thing the races are generally different and some of the races you can't even pretend still exist like Wood Elves.

There's advancing the timeline and then there's destroying the world along with the game system. Sure, that's advancement but if GW's concern was the storyline they could've done something different.
And yes Squats disappeared and although I wasn't in the hobby at that time, it doesn't sound as if they were as fully developed as a faction as some of the things that disappeared from WHFB like Tomb Kings, which is basically the WHFB equivalent of GW removing Necrons from existence, at least before they got the overhaul and became a strong army. I apologise if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that squats weren't as developed as a faction, at least not in the modern sense that we're used to today, with their own army book and range of models. Also - and again I'm not sure here as my knowledge of AoS fluff is shaky, so apologies if I'm wrong - models like the Tomb Kings simply don't exist in the AoS universe, and either GW pretend they never existed or were just like "oh they all died". Squats, to my knowledge, are still around in the 40k fluff and, as such, may even make an appearance in the future (especially seeing as GW seems to be getting more consumer-savvy), whereas I doubt there's any such hope for Tomb Kings beside a price-hiked appearance in that "bring them back" thing they've been doing.
I for one am out of wargaming if they give 40k the AoS treatment. A drastic approach maybe, but I'm nearing the end of university and will be looking to get a job, my own place, start my own life etc and, as much as I'd love to continue with the hobby, I could do with not having hundreds and hundreds of plastic soldiers (more of which I will inevitably spend my much-needed money on) lying around.

Wood Elfs still exist as the Wanderers. Their race hasn't been retgonned or anything, they've just got some issues going on currently thanks to alot of things going wrong in their favor but they haven't exactly been squatted or anything.

They could have done literally whatever they wanted.
They could've advanced the WHFB storyline and still had those races around. They could've had the universe not end.
Is AoS just WHFB where stuff happened that ended the universe? YES. That means that they ADVANCED THE TIMELINE, and the changes involved the destruction of the universe.

The lore says that they got eaten by Tyranids. How could the lore say that if they weren't in the lore?
They're not playable, yeah, but I mean, just because something's in the lore doesn't mean it has to be playable.
I meant that they weren't all gone.
What if the lore said they all died?
Would that erase them from the lore entirely? No, because the lore said they all died, and therefore the lore still acknowledges their former existence.
