The free fnp granted to a DG DP (at the loss of 1int on an int8 model) is a very very nice buff but upon considering Ectomany discipline the traditionally solid, albeit, expensive choice of winged DP of Nurgle becomes particularly attractive. Especially if armed with The Black Mace or PlagueBringer.

Lets look at the powers and how they all benefit a Winged DP (always bearing in mind the rerolls from a spell familiar to make it even more reliable):

Primaris WarpShock WC1
Basically 2 heavy bolters on a BS5 platform. 18" range not an issue due to the mobility of the platform. Nothing to shout home about but pretty decent for a free power.

Empyric Shield WC1
Considering a winged DG DP has a 2+ cover in the open when not in combat or an optional 3+ from power armour for ignores cover or assault, followed by a 5+ fnp and a 5++ deamon save when faced by ap3+ weaponary in assault, it makes for a pretty durable model who's only real worry is having to rely on a 5++ against tasty combat weapons. A 3++ doubles durability against these. Whilst a situational power, many players will probably agree that that is still usually the best way to take down Nurgle DPs so it will definitely help when required. A DP with Plaguebringer (or Nurgle weapons from the daemon dex) activating this power can easily go toe to toe with a WK.

Daemonshriek WC1
A 21" diameter (due to the base) haywire nova power on a model as mobile as a DP is going to be very powerful against any army with a number of vehicles. Its also going to be wounding a fair number of models even with st1 on a 6+. Basically forcing any of the opponents models (t4 or below) within the 21" bubble to take the equivalent of a dangerous terrain test (DT test fails on a 1 with armour save afterwards, this wounds on a 6+ with armour save afterwards - same probability). So even useful-ish against 'nids. Against anyone with tanks it's an incredibly useful power for 1WC.

Coruscating Blaze WC2
The only bum power. Basically causing less shots on average (5.25 IF another unit is within 6" of target unit) than the primaris for the same strength of shot at 1WC more.

Infernal claws WC1
This is a rediculously amazing power for a DP with Daemon weapon, not only increasing S and A by 1 but granting 2 additional st5 HITS (not attacks) for each hit made... on a WS9 model who rerolls hits against SM forces. So hitting almost anyone on a 3+ and a rerollable against the most common army. Bear in mind the DP will have 7 + d6 st7 ap2 I7 attacks on the charge before those large amount of st5 hits are even counted. With the PlagueBringer, wounding any T7 or below on a 2+ and T8 or higher on a 4+ with the initial attacks. With the Black Mace causing every enemy within 3" to take a T test or be removed with no save allowed. Both options can take on almost anything with the extra st5 hits finishing anything off that still breaths.

Ghost Storm WC2
Being able to move any unit 18" ignoring intervening terrain is amazing and with wings the DP isnt inconvenienced by the 18" range too much. Mobility is one of the keys of the game and this grants it. Also the unit affected counts as having moved in the movement phase for purposes of shooting... DG are relentless - food for thought.

Soulswitch WC2
Wow - an absolutely amazing power by itself but when combined with the killyness and mobility of a winged DP becomes insane. Get that DP in combat, drag in a Bezerker unit to replace. Opponent think they were smart charging your T5 fnp havocs to lock them in combat last turn? Swap them with the DP and rip the unit to pieces. DP near a IK and melta Chosen/Havocs near a unit in cover that needs to be disloged? Do the switcheroo and let the DP charge the unit whilst the melta deal with the Knight. Worried that your DP is suffering too badly against TWC or Wraiths? Swap him out for that Plaguezombie blob.

I honestly believe that aside from 1 power, the Ectomancy discipline is streets ahead of the traditionally taken Biomancy for a Winged DP of Nurgle.

Side note - if taking such a DP as your WL, all the DG warlord traits aside from maybe Arch-contaminator are pretty dang good!

Well I guess that Warlord trait works if you're going with the one other Daemon weapon instead of the much better Black Mace.

Are witchfire powers affected by jinks like normal shooting is?

Generally I don't give my Nurgle Prince any shooting for that reason, since Jinking Shrouded is their biggest advantage.

Yes, if you're rolling to hit and you jinked, you're snap shooting and IIRC, you can't use powers that don't roll to hit if you're snap shooting either - Someone feel free to correct me here though.

One thing to note though, you won't be getting the primaris for free since you have to generate at least one power on Nurgle (though you will get the Nurgle primaris for what it's worth).

If you're not facing down Str10 or str D things, then it's not a bad alternative to bio but unfortunately str10 / D is far too common these days. Bio has Iron Arm, Enfeeble (only works against CC though) and Endurance to avoid being 1 shot.

Sinistrum could be the alternative to Ectomancy, as you don't care about the Primaris anyway, and it gives you a lot of "durabilit6" powers. You get a re-roll to armor saves, and a power that is effectively a hybrid of Iron Arm and Warp Speed. The power that grants a 4++ aura versus witchfires is also admittedly rather neat ("Psychic Shriek? Bah"), while debuffing enemy Psykers or Invulnerable saves can easily win you the game by itself.

Personally, I prefer Ectomancy on a Bike Sorcerer myself. You're mobile, and you can still turbo around to good effect.
