Subject: White Primer - Corax White - It's awful, or I'm bad (very possible)

So I was trying to use some Corax White to prime a miniature this weekend, and it was really screwed up.
I did shake the crap out of it. Like, a lot. To the point where the child's tooth inside the can was bouncing around with glee. (Reality: shook for about 10 minutes). I also sprayed it in doors (in a storage closet outside) so wind and weather were not a huge influence.
The end result was that it went on thick, and obscured some features of the mini. Additionally, it also didn't stay smooth like I would expect having worked with Chaos Black spray before. Now, my guy is sitting in a vat of simple green :(
With this limited information (trying to anticipate questions), did I do something wrong, or get a bad batch of primer? I will never use white primer again, although I really really like the idea of priming in white. help!

This article: http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.com/2009/11/tutorial-kongs-priming-thoughts.html plus a Youtube priming video or two was all I needed for priming my stuff (with AP sprays, but still). If you primed like there and still the mini got flooded, maybe the can of paint was bad?

You might of held onto the button too long or you were too close. Also with the white primers you got to do short passes hitting the button before you get to the model so any gunk stuck on the nozzle gets out and away from the model

You need to spray a test piece to get an idea of the flow rate of a can before actually attacking your models with it. For cans with a high flow rate, you want to start pointing to one side of the model rather than directly at it and just whip it across the model. Wait a minute or two for one layer to partially dry before spraying from the same angle again to avoid flooding it. I haven't used Corax white, but I love Tamiya sprays but they have a really high flow rate so you have to use some tricks to avoid laying down too much paint.

I have used Corax White exclusively since it came out and absolutely love it. I've never had it obscure details, the only issue has been a grainy finish when I was first switching over from black to white as my main spray. I find you need to hold the can closer with white than with black otherwise the particles dry midair and land grainy.
For obscuring details I can only imagine you are applying too much. I would recommend the techniques above of panning the spray across the miniature. I am quite sparse with my prime in general.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-) |

To close would be my guess. I've found using GWs white that it comes out a bit thicker and so it's better to be a little further back then usual to minimize the effect. I really don't like using it and so only do so when the model is going to be especially colorful.

Comparing with the White spray from army painter and the old Skull White spray I have to say that Corax White is the best White spray I have used so far.
But it is still tricky to use. It takes several runs and I usually let it dry after each burst to avoid pooling which in turn might obscure details.
TBH I usually use a gray primer nowadays. For me it's the best compromise between coverage of black spray and the lighter colour which allows to get vibrant colours...

So, this is good advice.
Based on what instructions and feedback i'm getting here, it's highly likely that I simply got an old can of primer that is bad.
I really, really really really really really really really want to prime in white for some minis. I'm painting a librarian in terminator armor and he would look so cool as the Gandalf the White of my army.

Try Krylon Matte. I can (and have) spray that stuff on in 5 degree weather and it still covers and sticks like a champ.

Krylon rattle cans are the best, if you ask me. On my IG vehicles I use one of their camo green cans (forget the name off-hand) that is an amazing primer and base coat and saves so much time as it makes it just one color left for the camo pattern.
