Hey dakka,
I've decided that I want my Lord to be in termie plate (ive got a couple Cataphractii conversion ideas) and i also decided that I want to give him a robot guard ala Perturabo.
The question is, what do I want the robots (probably Forgeworld Thallax converted with maybe a shield and hammer) to represent on the board? The way I see it, I've got 4 options:
Terminators: a good mix of relative offence and defense, and what I'd call a middle of the road option. termies can DS with the Lord, Bring a few Combis, and have access to power weapons as well as providing a Champion to eat a challenge for the Lord. Another benefit to them, is that they can be included easily in a Grand Battalion detachment with no tax models.

Spawn: Everyone's favorite, Spawn are fast, butcher everything in close combat, and are cheap for what they do. My issues with them are that the Lord can't keep up with them well, so He'd drastically slow them down. They also can't be put into a transport to mitigate that, and can't deepstrike with the Lord either. Furthermore, I've never really been a fan of the whole lack of saves on spawn and have a hard time believing that they really are that great of a unit because of that. They are also easy to fit into a Grand Battalion.

Obliterators: the dudes with all the guns. Ive liked the idea of oblits for years, and just have never gotten around to fielding them much at all. The can deepstrike with the Lord. Yeah, they can't run and really shouldn't be in close combat, but they could still put in some decent work if a Lord is with them to mop up what they can't handle. Not easily fit into a Grand Battalion because of needing 3+ units and a warpsmith, but are troop choices in CADs so they can be brought in a more traditional list.

Mutilators: despite the universal hate for these guys, something about them draws me to them. Sure, they have a low attack profile and are only WS4, but they will always get an extra attack from their weapons and the WS isn't a massive issue on the whole. The can deepstrike with the Lord, leaving them out in the open with no guns to defend themselves with, but they do, at least, have two wounds to try to eat some low AP shots. They can be included in the army the same way Obliterators can be. This includes the wrapsmith tax that, to be useful for the squad, eliminates the deepstriking ability as a whole.

Now, out of these options, i want to have a body guard unit that would complement a Lord with the standard Claw/Fist loadout in terminator armor. They'd be working alongside autocannon havocs and a Daemon Forgehost (3 soul grinders) so they might end up having their advance covered regardless of which option I chose. My preference would be Mutilators simply because they are basically 2 wound termies with no guns for not too* much more price wise, but all the flakk surrounding Mutilators makes me hesitant.

What do you guys think? What would you use in your army to protect a Termie Lord? Bear in mind, I can't use any marks at all in an Iron Warriors army.

Thank you!

I'd say since you're going deepstrike and melee to stick with either terminators, mutilators or even Warp Talons.

Terminators have options, mutilators seem to best represent a bodyguard unit (2 wounds) and warp talons could DS in, and if need be hop over somewhere else afterwards.

Depends on what formations you are taking. Are you going with a Chaos Warband or a CAD or something else?

Termies with combis. Gets the most out of them for deepstriking while keeping them cheap and disposable like good bodyguards. The lack of tax is also a big plus too. Think about it this way, for the cost of the warpsmith tax to get oblits or muties, you could have 3 more termies with combis as bodyguards.

Currently,.I'd like to run the list as a CAD, with a couple formations (like the forgehost). Id like to run a grand Battalion, but that requires a lot of tax units

I think the Ursarax miniature could be used in a pretty straight forward way as Warp Talons.

I think Mutilators fit his idea best, thought I prefer Terminators for more versatility.
