Subject: Death Guard Warp Talons vs Sanguinary Guard

I know Warp Talons have always been considered garbage but in a Raptor Talon and with Death Guard faction they may be a much more viable choice now. Sanguinary Guard are not considered an optimal option by any stretch of the imagination until the Golden Host is factored in, which, like the Raptor Talon allows charge from deepstrike (which makes the SG a lot better). But SG have never been considered garbage (since the latest dex). So lets compare these two units in their respective formations:
SG plus points:
2+ armour
I4 and possible I5 on the charge (detachment dependent)
Furious Charge
2 st4 ap4 18" assault weapon
With Dante, scatter 1 d6 less
Easy access to ap2 without attached character
Reroll one missed to-hit roll in assault
1pt cheaper
Optional banner for +1attack to all
Warp Talon plus points:
Toughness 5
5++ save
Fnp
Reroll all to wound rolls
Fearless
Reroll to hits against Space Marines
1 more attack from the unit due to Champion.
-2 leadership reduction to enemy if multiple units from formation charge a unit
Fear (not as usless with above rule)
Warpflame strike
So apart from against ap3 weaponary where Warp Talons will only be slightly less durable due to higher toughness and 5++/5+++, Warp Talons will be more durable than SG against ap 4+ weapons and hugely more durable against ap1 and ap2 weapons. Against Grav they are very durable compared to almost anything else (only 8/27 hits will actually kill one on average).
They have one more attack due to SG weapons being two handed and the Warptalon Champion and can reroll all to-wound rolls (also to-hit rolls against the most common of armies) compared to one to-hit roll but do not get FC. Their initiative 3 shouldnt be a huge issue due to their durability and the fact that you will probably be charging in raptors from the formation alongside to take the hits if its a tough unit. Overall I'd say about as killy in that department if the SG do not have a chapter banner.
Lack of easy access to ap2 is a big deal, but this is where you can put the Lord with a powerfist. Plus with the formation and with JP movement, you have more choice in who they are engaging compared to normal units.
So in the comparison it looks as though they trade out mediocre shooting and easy access to ap2 for a noticably higher durability. The big plus point for the SG apart from access to ap2, is Dante's warlord trait. Scattering d6" less will be huge if attempting to assault from DS.
I would still probably favour SG ever so slightly over Warptalons for these reasons but Death Guard and Raptor Talons certainly turn them from Garbage into decent imo.
What's your thoughts?

I've been using Nurgle Warptalons since before traitor legions.
They are actually rather decent but they do require practice in how to use them properly.

Gonna try these. Ideally with cursed earth support.

One thing I think worth mentinoning about warp talons is they only have a 1d6 scatter if you've got an allied chaos icon nearby.

I have used nurgle warp talons to great effect before traitor legions or even raptor talon. They are fast, tough and hit very hard . Stick a lord in there and they become insanely good

I feel like cursed earth is almost mandatory if you are using warp talons. Not only does it make them much tougher, but you also get deepstrike without scatter. And even if you don't get it, you could still summon a unit of daemons with an icon (I think?).

Uh Sanguine Guard are still garbage even with their formation.
At least DG Warp Talons don't need a babysitter character.

They don't need a character, but cursed earth and curse of leper make them really nice actually. Since they're stuck at iniative 3 anyway, not having grenades doesn't really matter and they're tough enough to still be standing come their Iniative.

Could you elaborate on how you use them?
If the rumours are true the DG warp talons and raptors with I:3 will strike first if they charge.

I've used them in a fun game recently. They wrecked 2 predators and killed 2 terminators. There were no 3+ targets for them, though. Oh, i used unmarked WT and ds-d them turn 2 w/o scatter. So, i was really lucky there. DG raptors seem nicer though. You can get 2 meltas/plaz and a power fist for fewer points.

T5 and feel no pain hes survive the striking last problem that normaly makes warp talons seem weak. I have used a unit of dg talons in several games and always seem to make back atleast the points they cost and normaly quite a few more
