So going over the Lords of War in section in the Legion Astartes AOD army list for the LoW entry it talks about taking a war machine detachment which can consist of 1-2 super heavies with a HP value of 8 or less. It mentions this can be Questoris Knights.

Now my question is, is it ever worth taking them as a LoW choice as opposed to Allies? With Allies you obviously can get Household ranks as well. I can only assume it's for those instances when you're not allowed to take an allied detachment.

I suppose the only over reason not to would be around Rites of War - would these not apply to your allied detachment?

Yea, some RoW say no allies. A whole lot of them, really. Then there is the option of taking the LoW and taking just one Knight, versus the Allied requirement of two (HQ & Troop).

Yeah I was just thinking if you were going to take the 2 for Knights it might as well be as allies, as I don't think you'd suffer from the 'price of failure' either if they were allies?

As allies:

You can use household ranks.
Circumvents the LoW % issues.

As a warmachine detachment:

Loads of rites prevent allies from being taken.

Both have pros and cons really.

It also frees up the allies detachment for another ally, like some sweet Mechanicum or massed infantry militia/cults.
