What is the meta for them right now, and what is the most recent codex? The only codex I found was from 6th edition, but GW surely had to update the codex for 7th edition. Right?

Vets in Chimeras supported by Wyverns and the occasional Leman Russ. And the 6th ed one is the most recent I believe.

Thought for the day: Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.
30k Ultramarines: 2000 pts
Bolt Action Germans: ~1200 pts
AOS Stormcast: Just starting.
The Empire : ~60-70 models.
1500 pts

Nope. Our dex dropped at the tail end of 6th so people often theorise that "it was made with 7th in mind". The first few 7th ed dex's kind of support this idea, being lower tier books such as Ork, Dark Eldar, Grey Knights. Necrons changed all that and we've been left very far behind. The most recent book focusing on anything to do with the Guard is Fall of Cadia however it doesn't actually feature much in the way of Cadians, acting more as a cross between further enhancing Space Marines and reintroducing the long awaited Sisters of Battle - albeit only a couple of models.

What you will need: Quite a lot of money to buy, a lot of time to paint, and a lot of patience to haul your 200+ models to a game only to pack them away again over the course of 4-5 hours. "The meta" is pretty much ally in whatever new hotness is in the IK or SM codex.

IG can do well in casual games and local tournaments with most common lists (blob or mech) but to do well in a GT there's really only 1 list; infantry spam. Mordian Glory has a video series on it, but basically you bring 3 large blobs with heavy weapons and commissars, 2 max conscript blobs, 2 CCS with Masters of ordinance and primaris psykers you can fit.

In the 7th meta vehicles are pretty weak compared to MC. Blob does well because many lists will have trouble killing ~200 models even if they're guardsmen.

That being said, you can do pretty well in casual games without running max infantry

He's been ferried through hell on a ship that's ten thousand years old to some godforsaken, war-torn rock; He is one of ten million men snatched from his home to fight a war he barely understands; He wages war against devouring hiveminds, ravenous demons and hordes of hyper-advanced aliens with strange technologies and sorceries he never dreamed existed; no one will remember his sacrifice, there will be no records of his deeds, no glorious parades in his honor, and no remembrance of his name. All he will earn is a shallow, unmarked grave on a forgotten world untold lightyears from home.

Yet for all this thankless sacrifice a Guardsman is a man, just like you. He has no millennia-old genetic engineering, no prophetic leader, no miracles of faith. He has his lasgun, his orders, and those beside him. He is the Imperial Guard.

And he will hold the line.

For a decent starter force for casual type games, I recommend:

1x company command squad, kitted out as you wish, but always go for regimental advisors

2x veteran squads in chimeras, with either flamers, plasma or melts

Support units (tanks, artillery, etc) as needed to add points, wyverns are really good for pulping infantry...

Or 1x tank commander (Pask in a punisher is mean...) with a conventional battle tank as a wing man

2x veteran squads in chimeras, with either flamers, plasma or melts

Support units (tanks, artillery, etc) as needed to add points, wyverns are really good for pulping infantry...

1x company command squad, kitted out as you wish, but always go for regimental advisors

2x infantry platoons, keep them cheap and go for mob tactics, remember this load out has minimum 55 models and can break 300...

Add support as needed...

Be forwarned though, there is some speculation that a new guard codex and models maybe in the works with the Fall of Cadia and most guard models being Cadian in nature.

They'll probably just change the name to "Cadian survivors" or something. ...

As for a new book, it's three years overdue...
