Help me DakkaDakka,

You're my only hope. I am looking for a metallic red, not copper. I have Reaper's Ruby Red Metallic color, but it is a bit orangey.

I do not care from whence the red flows, so tell me any brand. This is my most desperate hour.

Well, not really. But still.

Thanks all!

I knew of one, but it seems to be discontinued. What about something like VMC metallic medium? Add a bit of red paint? Or red ink over silver?

I'm sooo, sooo sorry.

Gunze make a metallic red that I've used. The code is H87 for the acrylic variety. They work quite well but are similar to Tamiya paints in that you have to be very careful when layering that the previous layer has had plenty of time to dry as the paint itself is a strong solvent that can pull up previous layers. It's a great paint to airbrush though.

I thought Tamiya made one, but apparently they only have it in a spray can, TS18. I have in the past decanted Tamiya spray cans to use in my airbrush, not sure how they'd go using them with a hairy brush.

Warcolours probably makes one of the biggest ranges of acrylic coloured metallics, they have magenta, crimson and red. I haven't tried them though.

If you don't mind branching in to enamels, I believe Testors do metallic reds.

You could also just try mixing a teeny tiny amount of blue in to your current red metallic if it's too orangey, which will turn it to more of a cherry colour.

Try a red ink over a bright gold, gives it a warmer look than silver if I remember right.

Thank you for the feedback everyone! Several options to consider.

A red paint added to the VMC metallic medium would give you a metallic pink as the medium works like a metallic white. A couple of layers of red ink of the medium might work (haven't tried it myself).

Out of my Mind

Rub n Buff makes a variety of cool colors. Worth a look. It's waxed based, so using Makeup applicators works best.

- Prime Black
- Apply a small amount to make up applicator
- Rub off excess build Up off (Similar to Dry-brushing, but you're not taking it all off, just making sure it's smooth)
- Apply to model
- While I haven't had an issue, if you want to paint details over it, you might need a matte varnish if the paint doesn't stick to the Rub n Buff.

** Easy to use, but has a Strong Odor, so work someplace ventilated.

It depends, because different metallic pigments for different uses will have different sized particles. Like metallic pigment for cars could look like glitter almost on such small models.

Tamiya clear red over silver (or apparently gold). See my Iron Man plog for examples.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Vallejo has a red metallic in their Air range. I haven't used it so I don't know how it looks like, though.

I use Wicked airbrush acrylic paint for my colored metallics. It covers great and thins with water beautifully. I use it with a hairy brush. http://www.createxcolors.com/products/wickedcolors/pearlandmetallic.html

The underlaying color gives different tones to the final product. And you can either preshade or shade later with carroburn crimson.

I get mine at the local Hobby Lobby.
