It's been 50 years since we saw Samurai Jack and time has not been kind to him. Aku has destroyed every time portal and Jack has stopped aging, a side effect of time travel. It seems he is cursed to just roam the land for all eternity. Samurai Jack premieres Saturday, March 11th at 11pm ET/PT on Adult Swim.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

!st episode for the season aired tonight and there's also streaming marathon on the Toonami website. It met every expectation and didn't miss a beat IMO, it felt like it picked up right where it left off. It also had one of my favorite character designs out of any season as it looked like the machine gunning biker samurai was ripped right out of the pages of Shogun.

This is just so dead sexy.

I'm so glad Jack is back.

I like how they've not made it completely adult and that it still retains some of its quirkiness.

WHIP IT OUT BABE!

I also thought it was hilarious that the Cult of Aku that the daughters come from have been out of contact with Aku for a many years but Scaramouche has him on speed dial.

I bet that becomes a plot point, that Aku doesn't even know the cult exists and will be surprised when the daughters do something and get his attention.

Aku - Shogun of Sorrow, Master of Masters, and Master of the one night stand with no call backs.

On speed dial with his killer homies and tribute bearers, but hasn't talked to the priestess in years. She's obsessed over her one time fling with him and doesn't realized she got gamed, Aku hit it and quit it which totally explains everything.

It'd probably be a bit too edgy but I'd love to see an episode themed after a Jerry Springer or Maury Povich styled baby daddy paternity test. The Priestess being angry and ranting about Aku being a deadbeat dad to her 7 girls while Aku swings between being defensive and a turning into a quivering mess as the results are about to be delivered.

The first episode definitely made some indications, but the second episode was not at all subtle about the very dark tone this new season's been taking.

Spoiler:
Until we see bodies we can't assume anyone is dead yet. I wouldn't assume any of the Aku girls are dead solely from the fall as we all know Jack has to survive that, the ones that were stabbed and run through are probably done. The B&W elements of the fight reminded me a lot of the light vs darkness ninja battle episode which is one of my favorites.

Great episode and a very pronounced shift in the violence level as non-robot blood was spilled. They've made it a very prominent story focus and I think it adds a lot to his character but it's also a very strong change in the directorial approach of the series. It's deliberate and well thought out, very interesting to see that after 4 seasons they broke that barrier as it further drives the heavy dark tones in this season. This season has shed several layers of the "kid's series" label and has matured a lot.

I think things are setting up to pair one of the daughters up with Jack. They've been raised with single minded focus of Jack's destruction, taught to hate and seek vengeance with no understanding of love or compassion. This sets up the plot device of having one of them realize that their lives were being led with very narrow blinders, she'll have her eyes opened by Jack's actions of mercy and honor allowing her to turn on her mission and Aku.

Spoiler:
I honestly have my doubts about that last point. A heel face turn like that sounds a little too cliche, and that last daughter, even though a potential death was imminent, only continued to hurl curses and insults before she fell. Certainly a possibility, but my thought is one will escape and recur throughout the rest of the season. The daughters felt too menacing and too central to be gone after a 4 episode arc.

I think there may only be one left. Just because Jack's plot armor protects him doesn't mean everyone else will be fine, nor are we promised he'll be in ship-shape either. Besides, it looked like he punched one daughter so hard her neck might've been damaged.

One final note I'd like to make is... I F**KING LOVE THAT WOLF

Spoiler:
The wolf was a pleasant surprise and an awesome scene, from the moment they, both bloodied and wounded, locked eyes until the wolf left again.

But the entire fight between Jack and the Daughters.. the previous episode had him on the run, desperate to survive, not to mention shocked at having killed a human for the first time.

Now he's fighting them on his own terms and the fact that he killed one within moments of calmly warning them to back off.. just brutal.

And you know you're in deep gak when he's cornered, drops his weapon and puts up clenched fists instead.

The last daughter, Aishi, will no doubt play a further part in the story, she's the one who got the tar beaten out her during the training for straying away and looking at the outside world, she's also the one to take watch and gaze at the starry sky.

Though the show has brutally averted some tropes, would be a pleasant surprise if they did it with her as well, with Jack finding her dead or dying.

Some of the stories in Samurai Jack are very predictable/tropish, however it doesn't take away from the elegance of how they frame the story and it's actual telling. Even if people know the eventual outcome you can still draw them in with the way the story is told.

I need to rewatch the beginning and figure out which of the daughters is which, there's one that displays compassion by trying to help the sister that stumbles, is it the same daughter that's punished for sneaking away to look outside? They were basically all identical save for one who stands out because of a "weak" spot and being slightly more independent and individual which makes her the likely one to turn. My initial impression was it was the daughter that Jack bested in the previous episode who was left behind as they said she'd "fallen", but that could mean she was injured badly enough that she'd hinder the mission as opposed to being dead. (11:00 mark) Being injured, alone/abandoned would be the turning point to let her start seeing the world beyond the training and cult of Aku especially if she survives because she's found and rescued by Jack.

It could be nothing at all and the sisters are finished, but I don't think they would have added that much backstory and character design to throw away opponents. I'm pretty sure the one "weak" daughter will stick around for a bit.

Episode 4 spoilers, read at your own peril (I mean it):
Spoiler:
According to Youtube comments from people who looked ahead a full week in their TV guides, Jack and one of the daughters end up inside the belly of some large monster (must've been romping around at the bottom of the cliff) and must work together to escape. The Ep 4 promo video where said comments can be found shows Jack near a large pool of acid (presumably its stomach) and discussing a way to escape out loud, indicating there's someone there with him, he tends not to speak when alone.

I'm not sure whether there will be a true alliance between Jack and the presumably sole surviving daughter, or if it's a "put aside our differences for a little, then after we split up you're fair game" kind of deal, but my bet will be on the latter. Maybe after the escape, the daughter will start to reconsider her upbringing and actions or whatnot, or maybe she actually won't survive the attempt in some sort of sacrifice, heroic or accidental. Maybe she'll try to backstab Jack at a critical moment but ultimately fail to eliminate him. There's still plenty that is up in the air.

I'm really happy to see the visual treats are still present in the new series. Things like the mist and snow blotting out silhouettes, or the blood drenched jack and wolf. They're only a few moments long, but they're the best moments in an episode.
