So Forgeworld isn't putting up the old wings again and it seems that there's a plethra of choices for what to use for warrior wings. I've seen a few as I've googled around from gargoyle wings; plague drone wings, varghist wings etc... I'd be iinteresting in hearing and seeing anything that people here have tried, esp if there are any 3rd party produced wings that are worth considering - one downside to the UK is that there's far fewer bits for sale on ebay and the like so it means either trading/buying full kits or using 3rd party.

I'd also be interested to hear of any quirks - eg the vargheist wings have one odd wing set that has a wing almost flapping backwards; whilst the join area isn't on a ball joint so has to be fitted to greenstuff for certain.

How about jump packs? Before plastic gargoyles came out, I cut off the handle off the devourer and put it on the back of my fleshborer gaunts. Now they are rocket gaunts. The bugs inside the chamber create methane and then you have a sparky bug inside to light up the methane and it propels the gaunts.

Now with plastic gargoyles it's a moot point to do. But should work for shrikes. Might even look cooler with two of them on, on each side of the back so you don't just use one like an Ork.

I can very much envision that idea and it looking very cool; but its not the visual theme I really want to go for with my nids - plus I'd end up wanting to unify them and thus making huge jetpacks for all the fliers.

I like the idea of bio-jetpacks, but I think you also need flappy wings.
Why not use the Gargoyle wings for the Shrikes, but also put 1-2 Devourers on their back in-between the wings? So the bio-jetpacks provide the lift, while the wings guide the flight.

In this way, you will have the same aesthetic for the rest of the Nids (leathery wings) but you wouldn't have to get oversized ones for the Shrikes.
And you may not even need the bio-jetpacks. if I recall correctly, I converted some Shrikes for a friend a few years ago using just the Garg wings and they looked big enough.

EDIT: I just did a quick Google and it seem that someone here on Dakka and done this with double Garg wings and they look great:

Those double wings look great.

Bio-Jetpacks.. that's an interesting idea.. I might have to poach that when I start looking at getting back to my tyranids.. maybe make some sculpey tendrils and such giving it a more bio-organic look.. that's just genius, damn that's cool.

Back on the Big Flappy Wings aspect, I dug it out because I remember seeing these mentioned elsewhere - they're designed to go straight on the body of Tyranid Warriors, providing the wings and keeping the arm sockets open.

He's got a couple versions, and they can be a bit pricey, but it IS another option for you.

Personally vargheist wings seem to work well because of the size.
They will require GS though to fit perfect.

While I like the double wing aspect, need to remember that all tyranids have 6 limbs, wings included.
The only exception is the ammo bugs they fire.

But since they started it's always been 6 limbs.

The idea of a bio jetpack is a great idea though and one I'd not seen before.
When done well I think it looks amazing.

Impressive work; rather neat how the multi-coloured wings work well with an otherwise muted scheme on the models.

Interesting read, there.. granted I'll probably be doing it to Warrior bodies, so I'll need something a bit beefier for the main thruster, and likely bits order the parts. I already have a box of gargoyles in my Big Box O' Bugs, got them in a massive buy a few years ago.

Found my old rocket gaunt. It's a devourer muzzle with the 2 spine fists on the side. Lost my old pic so took a quick pic to just show you guys.
