Hey all,
As the title suggests, Im in a bit of a conundrum. I recently decided I wanted to give nids a try. I bought the codex, came up with what I think I want them to look like from a color scheme point of view, and quickly went about trying to find the best deals I could on the ebays.
The problem I'm running into now is all the bugs I've bought, in my ignorant excitement, are primered black; The color scheme I was hoping for would use a lot of yellows and other colors that benefit from a white undercoat.
I'm unsure if there is a quick and easy (emphasis on quick) way to get 80+ black bugs to be undercoated white so I can continue my original plan. If there isn't, this question quickly becomes a matter of "what do you feel is best?'
A: I accept that no plan survives real life and change my color scheme approach to something that can work within the confines of a black undercoat.
B: I cut the losses, try to flip the black bugs on ebay or elsewhere, and purchase on-sprue or what have you so I can have the control to paint as I please.
Another way of looking at this question may be what's more important to you, pricepoint or painting the colors you want to paint?
Cheers

Do you own an airbrush atall?
Celestra grey is close to white and covers amazingly for a light colour.
A quick blast over them and you shouldn't have many issues with light colours.
If the black is fairly thin you may get away with a careful white prime over the top of them.
Other than that, stripping the black is an option.
But that's both time consuming and a real pain in the arse for a lot of models.

I have access to an airbrush so they Celestra Grey might be a good approach.

Take it as an opportunity to try zenithal highlighting at the priming stage. The existent black will provide shading, give it a good dusting of grey from above at a 45 degree angle, and a final dusting of white from directly above.
And viola! Much of your highlighting work is already done...

Black-to-white or grey zenithal does not work well with yellow - yellow over black or dark grey tends to look greenish.
