Subject: Using Traitor Legion Special Rules

Guard Heavy Weapon Crewman

I recently got the Traitor Legion book and as a returning player it's my first introduction to using things like formations and detachments. I think I understand how formations and detachments work for the most part but I'm a little unsure how the special rules for each of the legions work.
If I want to use a legion's special rules, wargear, warlord traits etc can I just take some formations from Traitors Hate and a CAD and they get the legion rules or do I have to take the relevant combination of formations to fill out the legion specific detachment?
For example could I just take the Chaos Warband formation and a CAD and use the Black Legion special rules and tactical objectives on pages 74, 75 and 78 or can you only use those if you fill out the slots for a Speartip formation, but then you also get the rules on page 76?
Sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm finding it a bit confusing!
Thanks for reading!

You can apply the legion rules to any detachment or formation. You do not have to take the legion specific detachments.

Great thanks Bob that's what I was hoping. Makes it possible to use legion rules in the smaller games I usually play.

Just want to add that you may need to double check if the Formation itself allows it. If I remember correctly a number of formations are restricted to one legion in particular (Black Legion and Thousand Sons are the biggest offenders I think). In those specific cases, you must adhere to the legion rules as it is a requirement of the formation. However this is a case-by-case basis and not a blanket rule over the Legion rules.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.
When I'm editing alot, you know I have a gakload of homework to (not) do. |

Ah yes Black Legion have some good formations by the look of it. I'm going to paint my chaos marines in a non-legion colour scheme so I can make a few different flavours of list using my full collection eventually.
