Hi,

I am painting up the Dark Angels part of Dark Vengeance right now and I have some questions on what colors fit the lore of 40K for Fallen Dark Angels. My plan is to paint the Dark Angels in such a way that they would fit into a Black Legion style list or perhaps a renegade Space Marine list. I am still very new to 40K, but I have read some of the background that is available online.

So far for the basic Marine armor I am going with a black general color consistent with the Dark Angels before the Horus Hersey. I am keeping the red arrow on the right shoulder but going with a slightly darker red. I am also keeping the while Dark Angel insignia on the left shoulder. For the wings, I am going to try for a tan-khaki whit off white tips attempting to give them sort of a dirty wings effect to match their traitorous ways. Here is where I am at so far:

I was wondering if I should add anything else such as maybe gunmetal grey as trimming color. I am also not very sure if I should change this basic color scheme for the Terminators which are white (or specifically a sort of cream color) in the photos. I'm also not sure about the bikers which are already wearing black. I figure since the feathers are much larger the dirty wing concept with tie them in to the rest and help sell the Fallen Dark Angel concept.

Try this link. Dark Angels are on the top left. This is from the Rogue Trader or 40K first edition.

So they seem to be black with red line down the front of the mask.. If you don't like that, like me, I would put the red else where. It seems nobody follows the line down the mask anymore. If you can wait a month, we will see what GW does because it seems in the March we will see Dark Angels Fallen or how they looked before they changed colour.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

You may want to deface the chest eagle some, if these are the Fallen. I'm not entirely certain of the timeline between the introduction of Mk.7 armour and the fall of Caliban, but from information in the Heresy novels if they did have armour covered in Imperial symbology they're not going to just leave it unaltered.

If this thread achieves nothing else, that page from The Rogue Trader has really brought back some memories! I'm going to go and leaf through my old dog-eared copy.

@Davor
Yeah, I can't say I like the red stripe. Especially since I don't really like freehand (even relatively easy stuff like this) painting. Plus, I only think it looks half way good on the beakies. It looks like I do have the option of a red insignia from the picture you have there. However, I feel like I already have enough red on the models and what to add a little more color to them so I will keep the white.

My thoughts (I don't know if it fits the lore yet) on the fluff is these Fallen Dark Angels are part of larger Black Legion warband (the rest of the Dark Vengeance set) that mostly eschews Daemons (I like chaos space marines but don't care so much about the demons or chaos god part) and serves Abbadon as recruiters for the Black Legion itself. The fallen send out targeted vox calls to lure in imperial units to make them doubt the empire and/or force them to join the Black Legion which do seem to have the most open standards to join out of all of 40K.

As for these Dark Angels, they have completely bought into the idea that Abbadon will replace the Emperor. They actually think the loyalist Dark Angels are the villains (seriously what 'good' organization keeps that many secrets).

So not scratching out their insignia (they don't seem to have the double eagle anyways, just wings with a skull or sword) serves three purposes: (1) it tricks/confuses those who don't know about the fallen, (2) reveals there is something amiss with the Dark Angels, and (3) shows they have absolute faith in Abbadon to become the true Emperor (or Horus should he return).

As in the case of the movie Office Space with Michael Bolton, "Why should we scratch out our logo, their the ones that suck."

This chapter looks great when I am just playing Dark Vengeance as Dark Angels vs. Black Legion. However, I am also planning on using most of what I can from the box to put together a regular Black Legion (in terms of fluff) army that is more renegade with allegiance to Abbadon than having anything to do with demons or Chaos gods.

I still don't know if going with the Chaos Space Marine codex if I am basically going to create a Space Marine army mostly with Chaos Space Marine models. It would be a lot easier if I knew I could make a Chaos Space Marine army with only non-demon, non-chaos god marks, non-specific chaos marine types (e.g. plague marines). Either way, I think I will lose every single game (which I don't mind), I just don't want it to be a blow out every time.

You fluff sounds great Saturmoron Carvilli. Don't forget after 10 000 years the Fallen can get bored of their colours and might want to change it up as well so anything you do can't be wrong.

As for the stripe, it seems every chapter abandoned it.
