Working on an Ulthwe Strike Force and I want something to represent them coming onto the battlefield (and I dont mean the void thing that GW came out with for the Deldar). I'm thinking either something to represent a temporary portal/gate, or something I can place on the ground like a custom base (probably 5" Template but 3" templates would work too). I imagine something archaic/eldritch or something with the Ulthwe rune in the center with cracks running outward from it.
If you have ideas or websites I can visit, it would be GREATLY appreciated.
*EDIT: I dont care if it's custom made laser cut board, or resin base. Anything that works is a great suggestion.
If I could find someone that could make one of those board cutout bases like you see some terrain, but make it look like this, or even the Ulthwe symbol in the center and relevant symbols on the outside:
http://imgur.com/a/BjMXI
It would be perfect.

Wasn't there something like that for the Ulthwe Strike Force way back in the day? Have to poke around and see...

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:456556 is a Webway Gate from Dawn of War, you could toss it over to Shapeways or find someone with a 3d printer.
It'd probably be short work to construct one with a compass, plasticard, a knife, and greenstuff gems.

The only problem I see with that is putting it on the battlefield. How does the building just show up? I think I'd prefer something that wouldn't act as terrain. Thanks for the suggestion though!

If you google "Eldar warp gate" there are a number of suggestions, including plans, on the first page. Enjoy!

It was already there. The Farseers set up to have the battle at the spot where there happened to be a webway portal exactly where you'd need one to Deep Strike some Black Guardians on turn three.
(I'm not sure what portable webway generators actually look like; there were deployable ones at altitude in Aeronautica Imperialis but they didn't make models for them so you had to improvise, there's never been an official model for the Dark Eldar webway portal or for the portals attached to Black Guardians in various books, the only portable webway portal that's had an official model is the Storm Serpent in Epic and that one's built into a Cobra chassis.)
From the images in Dawn of War the 'portal' doesn't need to be entirely bounded within the vane, but it does get projected as an oval with one vertex at the bottom of the vane and the other at the point on the inside of the top, but the 3e Dark Eldar book's webway portals let you fly Raiders out of them and they're carried by individual models, so there's probably some sort of folding pocket-dimension apparatus involved; the issue with the Black Guardian rules is that you don't need someone to be in place at the portal position to place it.
A secondary point, though; there are buildings in Dawn of War that generate a large webway portal with multiple smaller vanes as opposed to a single vane, so you could place smaller portal-generator apparatuses around the perimeter of the actual portal rather than needing to describe the portal within one single big structure. So your Deep Striking units could be coming out of a portal described by two or three small portable generators that were placed ahead of time by Rangers sneaking around in the backfield, or teleported into place as a preliminary venture (on the assumption that you can make a bunch of these small portable generators and it doesn't matter if a couple of generators suffer Deep Strike mishaps so long as a few get in the right place so your Guardians don't).
So from that grand exercise in overthinking you could make a few little wraithbone vanes around some sort of clear plastic or heavily varnished disc to represent the portal itself. And placing it flat on the ground could provide a funny back-fitted explanation as to why you can't charge out of it, if you go from walking on the tunnel out the end gravity may be abruptly flipping 90 degrees so there's presumably some disorientation involved in taking the flying leap out the end (to clear it instead of falling right back in) and landing on the ground properly.

Thanks! How did I not do this already? I think I was using the term webway Automatically Appended Next Post: AnomanderRake wrote: nintura wrote:The only problem I see with that is putting it on the battlefield. You mean first turn right?
Maybe the vanes wouldn't be too bad if they were smaller. I'll have to look into it. I'm not very good at creating things from scratch, mostly my skills allow me to improve something that already exists. i.e I can paint a model really well, but I suck with something on a canvas.

Drawing an Eldar webway gate mostly consists of drawing circles. The DoW one is constructed with two to describe the primary arc, two more to describe the cut-off hook at the end, and three to describe the cut-outs in the back; get or improvise a compass (a peice of string and two pencils will do at a pinch) or print off some circular templates and you can draw the pattern onto plasticard or cardboard and get some good-looking vanes with very little effort.
In theory. I haven't actually gotten around to doing this. Will go set a few up tonight, see if it's as easy as it seems and post some pictures if it is. Automatically Appended Next Post:
(In all honesty after seeing that Black Guardians are just normal Guardians that are paying 2ppm for a fancy deepstrike rule I dropped the book in disgust and started looking at the Corsairs rules. Funnily enough that means I may need to build some deployable webway portals myself, the Corsair book has the old-school character-deploys-portal item.)

Why would that disgust you? In a 10 man squad, that's 20 points, but you have to take 4 squads at minimum, which is still pretty close to the cost of Drop Pods which do the same thing. Except they can contest objectives and have weapons, plus provide cover. You still have to roll for them to come from reserves anyway. You also cannot take warlocks. but my eldar army is Ulthwe anyway, but I wanted to get into Ynnari and this lets me play fluffy Ulthwe and still get to have reasons to play all the models I like the looks of in both CWE and DE.
I found these, and they look promising. They are fitting, they don't block LoS, and generally shouldn't be a problem
