Like with equipment and bits and such

I was thinking of starting 30k and wanting to do Night Lords. I figured with a little help I can use the 30k figures to form the bulk of a 40k army.

Possible? Anyone try it?

Certainly. You might have to have a few stand-by models as the 30k and 40k units aren't 100% 1 for 1. I'll be using my 1000 sons for both.

Just think about each model and how you can use it. Don't worry as much about units.

For example, you can take up to 20 bolter marines in a 30k Legion Tactical Squad. That can be your basic grunt marine that fills out a Chaos Space Marine squad and/or Havoc or other squad.

If you make a 10 man heavy support squad with auto cannons for a 30k list, you can put 4 each into two separate CSM Havoc Squads and have 2 left over to toss in a CSM squad or just set aside.

Jump pack guys exist in both 30k and CSM Raptors. The weapons they can take are a bit different, so here is where having 10 for a 30k list and 2 more on the side with CSM special weapons for a Raptor squad.

And so on. Just think about where you can use a model in either list as you buy and build.

Yeah. My Alpha Legion had an easy crossover and only had to add a few flamer dudes and sgts to make it a chaos army. NLs depending on how you did your 30k night lords and the RoW used might or might not work as easily. If you went jump packs then you shouldnt have any trouble since NL now love their Raptors.

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM!

Also, Night Lords didn't change dramatically in colors or style over the intervening 10,000 years, so you can paint them in their standard Legion colors and they won't really look out of place in either setting, unlike World Eaters or Thousand Sons.

My Blood Angels and Imperial Fists pull double duty quite easily.

The only things that I can't use in 40k but do in 30k are:
Destroyers (there just isn't an equivalent in 40k)
Tactical Support Squads (But the special weapon wielding marines are easily put into other units)
Sergeants for Heavy Support and Tactical Support Squads )I need to replace them with standard 40k sergeants)

3000pts Blood Angels (4th Company) - 2000pts Skitarii (Voss Prime) - 2500pts Imperial Knights (Unnamed House) - 1000pts Imperial Guard (Household Retainers)

2000pts Free Peoples (Edlynd Fusiliers) - 2000pts Kharadron Overlords (Barak Zilfin) - 500pts Ironweld Arsenal (Edlynd Ironwork Federation) - 1000pts Duardin (Grongrok Powderheads)

Wargaming's no fun when you have a plan!

Chaos Demons can play 30k, 40k and AoS. To be fair, not all units can be played in all three, but theres alot of overlap.

It's more than possible.
Just have to be careful with equipment though and stick to things used in both eras.

Alternatively, use magnets on any 30k only weapons.
Few mins extra work but you can swap and choose as needed.

Daemons have it the easiest though.
By taking one of the ruinstorm daemons they can be played in 30k.
Meaning essentially they can be used in AoS, 30k and 40k with no additional work needed.

Well, it saves you £6.50 over buying all the bits separately, for yes, from that point of view.

Mind you, do you really need special torsos, heads and shoulder pads on every Marine? For myself, I'd rather just buy a £16 decal sheet rather than £136.50 of bits, but that decision is up to you.

Well you don't have to put one on every one unless you plan to have only 30 basic marine period.
