Holy Terra.

I recently purchased a can of GW Mephiston Red Spray for use with my Thousand Sons. Today was finally warm enough to spraypaint, so I undercoated a squad of Vets with it.
This is how they turned out (with a brush painted model for comparison)

As you can see, they do NOT look similar, even though I was using the same paint. It was warm enough, about 10 degrees (CELSIUS) so that cant be it.

Thoughts? I, personally, am just mad that I spent 20+ francs on this.

Did you prime the model prior to spraying with mephiston red?

No...

Was I supposed to?

To clarify I followed instructions from a Warhammer TV video.

I've not used mephiston red before, but when using the other colour sprays I've primed it before hand in either black or white depending on brightness.

Was just thinking If you primed the hand painted model black beforehand it would account for the darker shade.

I've not used that spray

It looks like the spray covered well - which is what it's really for - I don't believe those are meant to be used as a primer per se.

It does look like the hand painted model was painted with a darker primer which will make a difference too

I suspect part of it is also the 'number' of coats. I wouldn't suggest you respray the model necessarily, but use that red as a base coat and do more coats over it, as you would do with a basecoat

Sorry I can't offer more help =/ hopefully someone else has done some with that spray and can offer more insights

Primed black. Sprayed red.

Contacted GW to complain about results.

I don't think GW ever claim that the spray version of a color will be a perfect match for the paint bottle version. By comparison, Army Painter have a "color match" system where their sprays do match their bottles.

I'm not surprised that it looks brighter. Your second model looks close to the hand painted one, and with some washes and some hand brushed paint on the flat surfaces will likely be pretty close.

The spray covered well, with no dusting or cracking, I'd say you got a decent can and spray out of it.

There was a thread in this subforum about airbrushes, and the general consensus is that even airbrushing mephiston red will result in a different result on the mini than hand painting it. Best of luck with GW.

Mephiston and khorne red are both way lighter than the pots. Now you know. Get a refund if you can.

Holy Terra.

My issue isn't the clour, the Color is close enough on both minis, but that the spray refuses to cover (i.e. cracks and dust, raised detail not covired at all...)

Bright colors tend to use organic pigments that are just transparent. A muddy more burgundy red will cover great. Fire truck or apple red will not. It's how paint works. It's why yellow is such a terrible color to work with in general. The difference is a transparent yellow is still yellow. A transparent red is pink. Reds are the WORST.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

I suggest ditching GW spraycans and switch to Army Painter Colour Primers. Cheaper, better covering and, as stated before, they have 100% matching paint pots.

I have stacks of them and they never let me down. The instructions are on the cans to get the best result.

Just go buy some 91% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and drop that guy in there for a few hours. Paint will slough right off under some warm water and maybe some
Minor brushing.

Some of my models painted with Mephiston Red have ended up with this same problem; powdery, very matte coverage. This is despite first priming with Abaddon Black spray.

As far as I could establish this was because I was painting in too cold an environment.

Since then I have used other cans of Mephiston Red with no issues, getting a coverage very similar to both Abaddon Black and Corax White.

So no, they shouldn't look like that. Like the above, I would recommend stripping with Isopropyl Alcohol.

Holy Terra.

Did that, although I probably should have worn a mask for both the spray painting and stripping. I now have a headache.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
GW contacted me and it turns out the can was most likely faulty. Go figure.
