Inspired by various single model conversions of Sigmarines, I decided upon making an entire army of the Emprah's Stormforged Heroes. Dubbed, The Stormcast Legion, these dudes are made from various Stormcast models, mainly from the start box, and my seemingly limitless supply of Space Marine bits, along with some clippers, glue and a bit of patience, and now, with 8th Edition drawing close, I think I've found my armies spot in 40k.

So what is my army?

Primarly, the army is made of Stormcast Marines, with the different models representing different units. The army uses Dracoths to pull Razorback transports, but other than that and dreadnoughts, has little to no mechanized assets. To combat this, the army uses some Squat allies (Kharadron Overlords) who are used as Scouts, Devastators, and the airships are used to represent tanks. The entire force is finished off with Roboute Guilliman, a cohort of Custodes, and eventually, some Primaris Marines.

While I'm not too fussed on lore or anything, I'd like these to have a sort of 'Prototype for Primaris marines' kind of thing going for them, and because of their sizes and loadouts, should easily be able to count as Primaris marines as well as normal marines (and maybe even Stormcast in AoS)
Anyway, without further adieu, the models!

These are looking really cool. What paint scheme are you going to paint them up in?

You might want to put smaller pics in your main plog, these are pretty huge!

How can I resize the pictures though? Anyway, I'm not sure on the scheme yet but I think I'll just go with a Stormcast Eternal colour scheme.

I've been thinking long and hard about the army, I want to keep it as 'Stormcast' as possible. Because of this, I'm thinking of using Draccoths, Stardrakes and Palladors as Vehicles, keeping Dreadnoughts though, I think they fit with the rest of the dudes.

What do you think? In other news... a package has arrived!

Made a bunch of progress on the first tactical squad of many, and their resin bases arrived. They are looking very cool.

Will just do a quick run down of how I made the AoS Starter dudes in to the Marines.

First, it's better to assemble them. Carefully clip off the arms, then the shoulders, being extra careful around where the shoulders meet the body armor. Some of the dudes will always have little holes in the side, but you can use the trimmed shoulder pad bits to glue to make a smooth surface and cover it.

Take off the head and the front and back collar. Space Marine helmeted heads don't fit very well with that collar in the way, and it looks a bit strange. As soon as I clipped that off the marine looked a lot more natural and cool. You'll need to trim some of the helmet plug off so it's a nice tight fit.

After that just glue on marine arms, backpacks and heads, shoulders. Easy peasy.

On my basic marines, I've removed the hanging tabards though, and left the pteruges. I've kept the tabards on the seargents though. Trimming the tabards wiill leave a lot of markings on one leg of the marines, but it's easy to cover up with filing down and a bit of purity seals.

Also made some progress on the first of the Retributor Centurions. The underslung heavy bolter really fits on these guys and the more beefy Stormcast armor along with the backpack really make them feel heavy. For his other hand though I have a few options. Chainfist, Hammer fist (using the trimmed Retributor Hammer) or more underslung weapons, like a melta or flamer. He's still very rough at the minute, have a lot of filing down and a lot more bits to add.

Loads of progress today. Finished the 2nd tactical squad today and made more progress on the Retributor Centurions. They are really looking cool with more bits added. Just a bit of cutting of the arms and repositioning.

Waiting on some Centurion Seige Drills to arrive that they will be using on their other hand. Used some Tartaros heads with Crests, and the trimmed crest from the Prosecutor for the seargent.

Also started the Prosecutor "Bikes". Used some spare Custodes bits for these guys because standard Marine equipment didn't fit properly, other than that there are some Grey Knights shoulders and shields, with regular marine bits plastered throughout.

Squad has a Plasma Gunner and Chainsword, Biker with Chainsword and Seargent with Power Weapon.

More updated on the Retributor Centurions. Added the Siege Drills and the Graviton on the seargent. I think the siege drills are just a little too big but I'm happy with them. These guys are finished now. I've been toying around with the idea of giving these guys massive shields instead of the Siege Drills. That way I could make more Centurions and they'd look a little more like the part. What do you guys think? They look OK as they are or do you think they'd be better with shields?

Thanks for the feedback guys, glad to hear you like em. They're definately great looking for marines and are pretty big as well. Custodes are barely bigger than them!

Been making a little more progress on the dudes. Have a total of 30 Liberators and definately want 20 Tactical Marines. Unsure what to do with the other 10 but I'm thinking Veterans.

Seriously, they look heroic and awesome. They almost look too good to be vanilla marines.

Hahaha, love that Conan clip! Thanks for the feedback guys!

Quick update - Been wondering what to do with my Dracoths. I've come to the conclusion that I want to use Dracoths as vehicles. Razorbacks, Rhinos and Predators. I played around with the idea of having a pack of Gryph hounds following the Dracoth and rider around (that the Marines could 'ride' as their transport) Played with the idea of attaching guns to the Dracoths and just leaving them as is, but, after much deliberation, I decided on one thing...

Dracoth Chariots! Chariot weapon platforms manned by marines, with enough room to 'transport a squad of marines' (or just for one dude plus base to fit in the back. It could techincally work. There's no shortage of chariots and similar things from fantasy that I could use. I could even chop up some space marine vehicles to do it, and for the gunner all I'd need is for him to be on a slightly elevated platform with a mounted gun in the chariot.

Now to figure out how to do it....

So, please excuse the terrible art skillz, but this is the idea for the chariot. Not sure how I'm going to make the chariot body, most likely a plasticard frame based on a mix of a rhino front end and a chariot rear end. It'll be quite a long, wide chariot, with a rhino hatch on the top and gunner poking out, using an old school Razorback style of shielded turret and firing ports on the side. Thinking of a Gorebeast harness to attach the dracoth to the chariot.

Small update today. Decided to get more work done of the Sigmarines while waiting for my plasticard to arrive.

Minor conversion on the Lord Relictor. Removed the head and swapped the arms. Used the crest from the Celestant on Dracoth. Re-positioned one arm. Looks really cool for a Captain/Chapter Master.

In the mean time, I'm working on the 10 veteran marines. I'm thinking of making my own custom gunblades. Just trimming down bolters and attaching them to power swords, nothing special. Maybe keep the Stormcast shoulderpads on them for a beefier look. Would like to keep their shields too, what do you think?

Seems swords have become the force's 'sign of authority'

Got my plasticard today so decided to make a start on the very basic chasis of the Dracoth Chariot. This is my first time working with plasticard so I'm afraid to mess up a lot though! Hopefully the chariots come out ok!

Here's a WIP shot of the chariot in action, bound together with the trustiest of solvents - celotape! Just to get a rough idea of how it looks assembled.

The idea from here is to bulk out the chasis, taking heavy inspiration from Rhino plasticard templates, adding some trims with thinner plasticard and then plaste(card)ring vehicle bits all over it. Need to trim a few holes for firing ports in the sides too, a hole in the top for the gunner to pop out of and a little raised platform for the gunner to stand on. Not sure what to do with the interior yet, any ideas for that and the exterior? Hoping for some advice from plasticard veterans!

Ouch! Had my first 'major' injury while working on some more dudes today. Ended up stabbing/cutting my thumb to the bone with a pair of clippers. Can't move it much so gonna be out of comission for a while, in the meantime hoping to get some more planning done and more discussion with others for ideas on armour plating and decoration for the chariots!

I've already decided to trim the Chariots down a lot. They are a lot wider, longer and taller than I'd like but it's not much trouble to cut the prototype down to the right size. The final version will be a lot less bulky!

As I said earlier I'm planning on copying the designs from Space Marine vehicles for the armour with a little barding, trim and spin on it. What do you think?

Been doing some light work on what's left of the Stormcast Marines. Ran out of plastic glue so not been able to finish them off. But used some leftover arms from the Liberators to make the next 3 Retributor Centurions to give them a different pose.

Also worked on the second Relictor, trimming off the bones and arms, again adding leftover Liberator arms to give him a less ornate look.

Thinking of using that guy as a chaplain. A bit strange shaving off the bone armour on the chaplain, but I wanted to save the really ornate look for the Captain I've already done.

After all of this is done, I've ordered some bits to make 5 Vanguard Assault Marines, then there's 5 Devastators, 10 Marines and 10 Veterans to do.

For the Veterans I'd love to use Deathwatch gear with Sternguard shoulders. I originally wanted to make some Sentinel Blades and use the bulkier Stormcast bits but they ended up looking a little out of place next to the other guys.

If you want to resize pictures, get a Flickr account (free). Upload picture to Flickr, click on the uploaded image, select the 'download' icon in the lower right of the screen, then select 'view all sizes' and it will give you a bunch of resized image options. Then copy the resized image to Dakkadakka because Flickr doesn't always work with Dakka for some reason.

Thanks for the advice John! Will resize my images like that from now on!

On to today's update. I made some more progress on the Dracoth Chariot. The more progress I make though the more I realise that my skills won't do it justice. It'll end up looking like too much of a mess. The more angular design of the front doesn't fit well with the Dracoth, and the whole box front with turret idea doesn't fit well with the chariot.

Oh well, live and learn, it's my first time working with Plasticard after all.

The resize of the chariot is about right though! Still enough room to fit a miniature with 32mm base in the back.

I'm opting for a redesign. A more traditional chariot, but slightly wider and longer, open topped, with a raised platform for a gunner to stand on. The simpler design will be a lot easier on my lack of modelling skills, and will hopefully blend well with the rest of the army because of the simplicity. I can add a bunch of paint decals to it later to give it that SM feel.

Very simple to make, the only real finicky bits will be the trim for the chariot body. I'm going for a rounded front end, at the minute, the body is made from 2mm plasticard, does anyone know how to bend it in to shape?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Got to work on the new Chariot. It looks great! Just need to sort out the bent front end and the trims. It's a lot easier to make, only a few parts which is great, and all of them are easy to make.

The idea for the rest of the Chariot. The front end will be a slightly raised platform where the two marine gunners will stand, a banner right at the front of the Chariot.

More progress on my dracoth chariots. Coming together perfectly and apart from a few errors with it that I'm willing to overlook it's great. All it needs is for both gunners in the front to have their special weapons, and for wheels and a harness to be added. Maybe trim and file a little too but that can wait until everything else is done.

It's been quite a while since my last update, had quite an adventure and my thumb is pretty good now. Been waiting for Chariot bits to arrive and they finally did. Put the finishing touches on the Chariot cart but will upload pictures when I attach it to the Dracoth.

In the meantime I failed on converting 10 Vanguard Hunters into Scouts. The idea was for them to be less armoured with bare arms, but after buying some Marauder arms, I found them to be way too small, so trying to combine them with Stormcast arms by chopping each in half and attaching them together made for a much nicer, bulkier arm, but the poses were just wrong,

Decided to sell the 10 Vanguard Hunter bodies and a bunch of spare bits on ebay, scrapped the rest. Nothing ventured, nothing gained eh?

I managed to make some real nice Veterans though but using the Vanguard Hunter arms on starter set Liberator bodies, with unarmoured SM heads and backpacks. Used some of my leftover custode bits and Retributors to make some nice full squads of them.

They are much more Stormcast than Marine, and thought the bulky arms and shoulderpads of the Stormcast fit much more for veterans and melee infantry. Still in progress on those, but will upload pictures when I've finished them. The seargents in particular look great.

Looking forward to Kharadron Overlords release, however, as their basic infantry will make great Scouts, and their heavy infantry, amazing Devastators. The Airships can count as Vehicles for the force as well!

New update! Dracoth Chariot is finished, more or less. I think it works great as a Razorback, especially because of the new Vehicle rules in 8th edition too! All I need to do now is finish off the rider and paint it. Included are the marines I painted earlier in a better quality picture. The flash really doesn't do them justice, though, they look much better in person :(

In the end I decided to use a Devastator Sigmarine to represent the heavy weapon of the Chariot/Razorback.

I painted them following the How to paint Stormcast Eternals from Warhammer TV but I don't really like the look too much. I've tried a new techniques with a Custodian mini, when he's finished I plan to do the same style for all future Sigmarines!

Some more progress on my Sigmarine army, here for display is a Librarian made from a Knight Questor, and some Chaos Knight bits, and an 'Honour Guard' that are being used as Veteran Seargents for Veteran squads, made from Retributors, Marines and Custodes. Very happy with how they came out, though the psychic hood on the librarian is very rough.

Brief update.

Finished off the last of my Legionnaires (tactical squads) and arranged them into their groups. Four five man groups each with seargent and flamer. All looking pretty snazzy, undercoated, and some painted.
