Hi Everyone,
I was re-reading the 3rd ed Dark Eldar codex for the umpteenth time yesterday evening and I was wondering if the rest of you have any particular codices or issues of White Dwarf that you always re-read even though you probably know them off by heart!
There is just something very special about that book for me. The background stories are brilliant, the colour scheme of the models in the book really fits the tone, the snippets of background and black and white art panes littered around the rules all just work so well together. Even the colours of the pages and the cover seem to fit just right.
Perhaps by virtue of being a single central location for an entire faction, Commorragh really stands out as being one of the most evocative pieces of the 40k universe to me and that is definetly down to this book.
Silly thing is that I have never even owned a single Dark Eldar miniature!
The 7th ed Ork Codex and some particularly excellent White Dwarfs from the early 2000's also make it onto my list.
What would make it on your list and why do you keep coming back to them?
Cheers
Kroem

I'd have to look up the issue numbers, but the 3 old White Dwarf mags where they covered the 3rd War for Armageddon battle report, with some supporting bits and pieces of fluff in-between the huge battles. Great reading, and led to me collecting the Imperial Guard Steel Legion many years later!

I've bought the Ork 3rd edition, and Chaos 3.5 edition twice after misplacing them, that's how much fun they were to read.

Daemonhunters/Witch Hunters, 3rd edition, and the 4e Space Marine book. From back when you had an endless supply of customization options and what parts the kits came with didn't serve as justification for how the rules worked.

Nice! I'm glad I am not the only one who does this.
I missed out on the original 'Tale of Four Gamers' as I only bought White Dwarfs sporadically back then. I have been enjoying the one in the new White Dwarfs though.
The Armageddon campaign must have made an excellent read, I have always though about starting a Slavlar Chem Dogs force but it takes me long enough to convert and paint my Snakebite let alone another army.
I had good memories on the 3rd Edition Ork Codex but it didn't keep me interested that long on my most recent read, I think they have done a brilliant job with the 7th ed Ork codex especially re-incorporating some of the Ork social organisational information which I don't think had been seen since Rogue Trader. The Magus Biologus report in the back of the 3rd Ed codex is absolutely fantastic though!
Witch Hunters was such a cool Codex, one of my favourite battle reports from back in the day has Sisters versus Tau. It had St Celestine, arco-flagellants, penitent engines, inquisitorial bodyguards... all the good stuff! Fairly sure one of the penitent engines got its hands on a Tau Ethereal as well which is always a good laugh.
I never read many on the Fantasy books but I do have a Tomb Kings one whichis pretty cool. I always liked reading the Fantasy battle reports though, one particular one that stands out is the 'Battle for Blood Pass' where two forces of Dark Elves had to defend a watchtower from a ravening horde of Chaos. That pretty much convinced me that Cold One Knights were the coolest unit in Fantasy haha!
I think the recent White Dwarfs have been a fine return to form to be fair, they have a good mix of story, battles and hobby advice. Alot of the old Rogue Trader books can be found on SCRIBD which is pretty cool. WAARGH DA ORKS is defo worth a read just to get a better picture of how Orks entertain and organise themselves when not in battle. At the moment I'm considering the best way to put some household banners on my Sknakebite boyz.

For 40k it's definitely the chaos space marines "3.5" edition. And also love my index astartes 3.
For "fantasy" it's definitely my warriors of chaos and storm of chaos books. Love them.

Chapter approved. I still kick myself for tossing them all when I quit last time.
I miss the weird chapter traits that had actual repurcussions as well as benefits.
What ever happened to suspensor rigs?
So many old White Dwarfs and Chapter Approveds gone now and too long ago that the memory gets fuzzy.

Agreed. The fluff and the artwork for that Dark Elf book was spot on and was my launching point for moving away from my Dwarfs. If I remember correctly a lot of the fluff was written in character from the Dark Elf point of view as well, which was great as it made it feel unique and alive as reading the Dark Elf and High Elf books gave you really different takes on major events in the Sundering and years since.

Other than that, WD127. Rebirth of the eldar (literally, birth of the path system and aspects, and a new focus for them). Heralded their rise to prominence in 2nd ed a couple of years later.

Hey Angel, can you find out what issue numbers those are? I'd love to read them. I only have the old Armageddon codex, which is phenomenal but I am trying to get my hands on any & all Steel Legion material that exists.
Edit: I did some digging and its WD issues 247 & 248. Found some online and bought them, thanks!

Codex Imperial Guard 2nd Edition is my guilty go to pleasure for rulebooks.
I want Stumper Muckstart back. A deadly character who, because of a low point cost, didn't give the oponent a victory point if he was killed.
White Dwarf favourites:
The Glazer's Creek battle report. Praetorians vs Orks. No points costs and a cool scenario.
The issue with the Space Wolves cover that has the Bunker Assault rules and card bunker in. I have purchased many a copy over the years.
Some have succumbed to old age but I have another three to add to the four in the photo.

I do really enjoy the 3.5 Chaos Codex.
Chaos Space Marine codex 3.5 was what got me started in actually playing and not just ogling WH40k. Them and Tau (I remember their release/creation) though I never stuck witht them and have since gone loyalist. Automatically Appended Next Post: Does anyone remember the old Vehicle Design Rules?

Turns out there is a lot of cool material to read out there!
The Preatorians are always good to see, I think they also feature in a photograph of the 'Battle of Ork's Drift' in the 3rd edition codex which has a huge horde of buggies and a massive Ork fort that I would love to own.
That is a fantastic gaming table! I'm always worried that cardboard terrain will move around because it is so light or get damaged but those bunkers look nice and chunky.
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the Eye of Terror campaign that was played out over numerous White Dwarfs yet.
The battle reports usually featured the ever so cool Lost and the Damned army list from Codex: Eye of Terror which was an eclectic mix of muties, spawn, renegade imperial guard, Chaos space marine aspiring champions, Defilers etc.
The articles about how to model your own squad of 'orrible mutants were a particular joy.

For me, it has to be the original 3E Daemonhunters and Witch Hunters books. I've always loved the background and character of the Inquisition, and those codices captured it perfectly. I still miss the old Acolytes, where you could pick particular characters to enhance your Inquisitor's skill set.
