Hi!
As some of you might have read in my introduction thread, I used to collect and paint a gak ton of
SM and
IG 8 or 10 years ago - I recently moved in a new home, and rediscovered all my troops stored in my things. I was tempted to get back in the game and repaint my
SM, but as I'm working in the 3D industry for movies and game cinematics, I rather decided to make a
40K 3D project. I know Dakka is essentially about the crafting and painting and doing things with your bare hands stuff, but I thought that having advices, feedbacks and ideas from passionate people in this forum could be great and very interesting !
A few lines about the project:
It won't be a movie, just a 2 or 3 minutes long full CGI video. The idea behind this is to improve my knowledge in 3D softs and methods and have some fun!
It will be quite classical: Orks vs Imperium. We'll see a bunch of guardsmen and
SM fighting Orks for an industrial complex. I want it to be as "realistic" and "believable" as possible - I'm not searching for an ultra-realistic result, I just want to do something credible for the
40K universe. By the way, the reason of this short format is mainly my technical ressources (I have a good workstation, but not a render farm); also, shorter means more time to improve the quality. Oh, and, I can work on it only after work or while my lunch breaks, soooooo a short format is better.
Concerning the clashing forces, Orks will be from a generic clan (I don't know much about Orks clans
tbh), same for
IG -
SM will be Blood Ravens though. I know they're not very appreciated by a lot of people, but I love their color scheme. I want to include a lot of vehicles too, it's a shame we don't see more of it in cinematics/movies/games (except in
DoW).
The video will be like a big Apocalypse game... multiplied by 200. I'll approximatly put between 10000/20000
SM+
IG, and maybe 30000 Orks, with all kind of vehicles as I said, aircrafts and units. Here's the vid's outline:
a bunch of deathstorm drop pods are launched on the Orks' lines -> Imperium forces are struggling -> battle, battle, battle -> there are no more Orks to shoot at -> suddenly the ground shakes -> we see a huge Ork charge against the human lines -> deus ex machina: an imperator titan comes and do titan stuff.
The deathstorm thing is important, that's my intro (we'll follow some drop pods during their fall); I'll make two wide shots (at least) of the battle in the industrial complex surroundings, and the rest will be Imperium focused (near fortifications, trenches and hot points). Kinda the intro of Saving Private Ryan in the style and action.
Also, I'm modeling and texturing a whole bunch of things like buildings, terrain and specific units, and I usually get my main units from games 3D model because I don't have enough time to do it myself.
A picture is worth a thousand words, so enough talk, here are some pics. Keep in mind that, for the moment, I'm just testing things, there's nothing finished.
Some tests for the background. The industrial complex will be situated on a desert planet, so I want a desert/canyon like environment
A test with 15000 or 18000 guardsmen.
A test with 35000 orks (only with ardboyz and boyz).
I made these two tests in order to see how many guarsdmen/orks I could put in a simulation without exploding my computer.
Since last week, I have more free time to work on my project, so I did a storyboard, some concepts of the industrial complex and its surroundings and a few modellings, like a Vengeance weapon battery:
Voila. There is a lot to do, but that's worth it!
To-Do list:
- texture the Vengeance battery
- do Imperium fortifications and industrial complex
- gather more units
- create my cameras
- do some rendering tests.
If you have some questions, I'll be glad to answer it! If my thread isn't at the right place, sorry in advance!
PS: the title is gakky, but it's temporary. I have to find a better title.

Edit: I found a better title: my movie will be called "Apocalypse". Simple things are the best
