If you were ever in a large scale apocalypse game what would be the maximum amount of points per table per side you would be willing to play with? By large scale apocalypse game I mean 500,000 points plus. I would like to know as I'm currently organising a world record game. The game will be played in Brighton.

The highest I've ever played is 7k points per team, 2v2. Started at 10 in the morning, stopped playing late in the afternoon, had gone through about 3 turns, but by that point the game was basically decided. Unfortunately wasn't playing with friends, it was a LGS event, so one of the players brought a tournament Cronair list and persuaded his friend playing Ultramarines to bring a 10 man squad of Sternguard with combi meltas in a drop pod to nuke my Shadowsword on turn one. Take a wild guess at how fun that was. I've also done 5k a side 1v1, got to turn 2, I brought in 2000 points worth of Terminators using some old apocalypse formation I forget the name of, killed a bunch of Orks, and then he wiped out all but 5 of those Terminators in a turn. We could have played for turn 4, but after something that decisive we both figured continuing was a waste of time.

So yeah, I definitely wouldn't play 10k a side. It would take way too long, noone wants to wait more than an hour before they can get back to doing something. Plus, like every Apocalypse game, barring exceptional circumstances, the final balance of power is probably going to be self evident by the end of turn 2, making every hour after that even more of a chore. On top of that, if I'm taking the time and effort out of my day to play Apocalypse, I want to be able to take frivolous stuff I usually won't consider like power swords and plasma pistols here and there. I don't want to play against someone I'm unfamiliar with who happened to decide to go for a 100% efficient list designed to stomp me so quickly I won't get any enjoyment.

The only way I'll go near Apocalypse again is if I'm playing 5k or less and I know that the person I'm up against makes for good company and isn't some WAAC prick.

The person you played in that apocalypse game is the sort of person that doesn't understand what apocalypse is. It's fun, and if you don't get chunks blown out of you and blow chunks out of the enemy then you've played the game wrong.

I recently ran a 30k Apoc event that was 30k points per side. 4 players each side. Good times and we did a full five turn game in one day.

Recasts are like Fight Cub. No one talks about it, but more people do it then you realize.

20k total is far too big for a 6x4. You could barely fit 40 Baneblades into that space, let alone any scenery.
The bigger the table the better the game imo.
Personally I'd limit each table to 10k absolute maximum but would prefer 4-6k.

Where and when are you planning on doing this?

If my sums are right you're planning 50 players?

Best game I ever played was 5000 points per person 4v4 on three 8x4 tables in an "H" or "I" format.
Dark Angels, Astra Militarum, Space Wolves and Ultramarines vs Tau, Tau, Eldar and Necrons.
Brutal, brutal game.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

On a single 8x4 table? 5k-8k per side seems about right, 10k acceptable, anything beyond and you're starting to pack things like sardines.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

Depends if you are playing with 20k of infantry and regular vehicles, or 20k of superheavies or titans

My gaming club typically plays 3-4000 points per player, and generally has one person per 4x6 table segment (we play Apoc across a 6 ft table rather than 4ft) - depending on who is playing, some will stick to deploying in "their" 4ft section, others will spread out over their side of the table. We often set a limit on superheavies/titans to 1 per player, but that varies depending on the kind of game we want to play.

The thing is the I'm likely to only have so many boards available and only so much space which means that a high points per table per side is going to be highly likely. A 600,000 points game on miniwargamings channel was played at 14,000 points per table per side. The record for points on one table is 743,000ish.

And it looked awful with no tactical decision making and was basically an exercise in dice rolling.
If you're purely about getting the record then go for it.
If you want a fun day or weekend of gaming then reduce the points per 6x4 table to something sensible like 6k total.

Seems large enough

Can a Basilisk reach the other end of the table?
If no then its big enough

Not even close. One line of tables would be 68 ft.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

I once played a 12k vs 12k on an extremely long board, it was lots of fun trying out all the stupid apocalypse formations and rules that wrecked everything. The only thing I didn't like about that game was that we had timed turns and the Ork player had brought 3 Stompas and LOTS of boys so his shooting turn took up 90% of our turn time so I had to rush my assaults.

Probably wouldn't do it again because it took a whole day and we were lucky to make it to the end of turn 2.

Well I think I've got something. It may have to be at about 16,000 points per table per side but it's free.

Personally I don't think that free entry is a good idea for players, if that's what you meant?
If you're getting the 'hall' for free then well done.
I'd suggest charging a significant amount to play in advance to avoid no shows and disappointments.
With that in mind then perhaps look at hiring a hall that is fit for purpose and gives players value.
