If any of you remember Amanda Todd, this is the guy who had the picture of her and was blackmailing her.
Fething scumbag. I kind of hope he tops himself in prison.

Sounds like a pervert blackmailing underage girls into taking photos of him. I hope he has a bit more put on top of his 11 years when he's charged for making child pornography.
It's sad that one of his victims moved school and was still bullied so much, it can't be stressed how much kids should avoid taking compromising photos of themselves for any reason.
Comments to the effect of 'just turn off and ignore it' are ignorant. Once it's being passed around phones and in school you have people pushing it in your face all the time. Turning off all devices and staying in the house isn't an option.

I was talking to a friend about this. He has two kids, aged 9 and 7, and we were discussing his plans to introduce cell phones/internet/etc. He is terrified of what they may do online, commenting that even on the children's version of YouTube there are plenty of borderline creepy videos that he doesn't want his 9-year old daughter viewing. Even with good parenting, a kid will do impulsive things and unfortunately with the internet those momentary lapses in judgement can have really long-term consequences.

Given his crimes. Well even criminals, and others in jails, will have family, others will have kids.
Now they are still human, and probbly worry all the same things so I'm sire they gonna love this guy...
Not saying right but if someone decides he needs to trip on the stairs. I doubt that anyone will feel too sympathetic.

Well, that's only for the crimes he was sentenced for in the Netherlands (fraud and blackmail) - where a court has approved extradition to Canada where he's up on some even heavier charges. So 11 years plus whatever years Canadian courts throw at you for "extortion, possession of child pornography and attempting to lure a child online".
If he's a first-timer he'll get time off for good behavior but it'll still be a long heavy sentence.

I don,t think anyone will mind if they hand him down a nice long you will die behind bars sentence.
Hopefully seeing him get so heavily punished might make others think twice and save lives in long run.

Glad he got a heavy sentence, unusual in my country I must say!
As an example, a guy who killed his sister in law iirc with 40+ stabs got 6 years.

For all the anti-death penalty bleeding hearts there are on this forum, it surprises me to see so many ok with his "accidental" stair fall, which can be quite lethal. For the record I'm less subversive. I would happily be the guy to toss him down the stairs, it just surprises me that some of y'all are ok with it.
As for his sentance, the 11 years is for the black mail, etc. Her suicide although linked to his actions would be hard to convice him for, since she indeed chose that route herself. Does canada have a charge for being an accomplce in a murder, I think that one would fit a little more.
Bottom line upfront, scum bag, deserves to be removed from the gene-pool, but you all surprise me.

I'm an anti-death penalty bleeding heart. The death penalty does nothing to deter or reduce crime, and only satisfies the dullest members of society's sense of justice. I also think so-called "inmate justice' is abhorrent.
I do support an individual's right to self-termination, and I would not be disappointed in the least if this scumbag chose to exercise that right.

I'm actually very comfortable with the idea of a death penalty (though not necessarily its implementation), but very disturbed by calls for prison violence as extra-judicial justice. Yeah, I hate this donkey-cave, too, but succumbing to the mob subverts the entire system and leads to a loss of protection for everyone's rights. I don't want to see prison beatings allowed to be an unofficial but accepted component of every sentence.

I hope you're not lumping me in with that crowd because I responded "He deserves all that he gets and then some, timewise". I'd reiterate an emphasis on "timewise", because 11 years seems a little light for a guy who functionally murdered a child - but I'm not now nor have I ever advocated for extrajudicial punishment like "an accident" in prison. You can't be a nation of laws, except when it's inconvenient or when it fulfils a revenge fantasy.
I'm also not against the death penalty in principle, just in practice. I have no problem with the idea that people can commit crimes so heinous they warrant death by the state; but I also believe that as a nation the US has proven we're not capable of administering this most extreme of sentences fairly and evenhandedly, and that is the basis for my desire for a moratorium - not a ban - on capital punishment in the US.

To restate what has been said earlier. The 11 years only cover a number of things but exclude the suicide as he will most likely face extradition to Canada to face trial there for the girl's suicide, as Canada requested. He is fighting the extradition in court, but it seems unlikely that he will win his extradition case. I hope the Canadian court can properly sentence him for the suicide as there seems to be enough evidence against him to face partial blame including his chats to his victims in which he once used this line: "I can totally annihilate your life. I will drive you to kill yourself, bitch. I will go that far." Can't see him reform this kind of behaviour, hopefully Canada can add quite a few years and he won't ever have the opportunity to do this again.

Somehow I see that line making a Canadian jury very very unlikely to show any leniancy. Plus the fact he got all the other charges linked.
They could lock him away for a long time.
Canada i believe still has the British equivalent of a life until we see fit to release you sentence.
Aka your in till you die.
Being a indirect killer, pedo, blackmail, and a just general scumbag could earn him that special treatment.

It might help to consider that there are different reasons for opposing the death penalty. Some people oppose the death penalty out of a general "no killing people" rule, and that would be inconsistent with approving of death by vigilante justice. But many of us oppose the death penalty because, while it can be argued that the death penalty is a fair and reasonable punishment for certain crimes, the implementation of the death penalty in the current system is not acceptable. There are too many cases of innocent people being convicted of crimes that could (or even did) earn a death sentence, and too many questions about whether the sentence of death vs. prison for a convicted criminal is influenced by racism or other inappropriate factors. But in this case there don't seem to be any such questions. The police caught him with plenty of evidence of his crimes, and his entire defense seems to be "the police collected the evidence illegally". I'm not going to shed a single tear for him if he dies in prison.

Yeah, but apparently what people got from it in this thread is not “We need to work so that teenagers don't bully each other”, but rather “That one person is a monster so we can conveniently ignore all the other, small bully and pretend that him getting killed will solve everything”. Uh, okay? That's, like, a terrible set of priorities. Frankly the fact that he was arrested and convicted is great, and I hope it happens a lot to various trolls all around the internet, but having a death sentence won't help. Having all trolls/harassers know that they will be caught and punished helps, catching just one a giving him the death penalty… how did making a few examples work out for stopping illegal downloads ?

Life can mean two things by UK legal system.
Its generaly classed as a 25-30 years behind bars, that's a life sentence. Maybe relaxed after half or so on good actions and showing remorse and moved to more open facilities' etc. Still not free, just not in as tight conditions.
Or
In worse cases or where the person remains a threat to public.
In jail until you are considered a non threat, too old and more suited for a secure old peoples home or a person classed as mental and transfered to a particular jail grade secure mental facility where generally its for rest of lives and they are held in secure but medical supported conditions.
Some of worst killers have been held there for decades and still remain there.

To be fair that thread was really limited to the awful behavior of one person, and the lock comments make it pretty clear that as a community that isn't acceptable. So, the bar is at least a little higher than that.

By that I mean if you murder people indiscriminately your life is now forfeit. The state can and should remove you by permanent means. There is nothing more permanent than death. I do however concede there are times that absolute guilt can not be established and that therefore is a flaw in the system. But this argument has been made before. My point is simply that some in this thread have been vehemently opposed anything that hurts another human being regardless of what they have done, and there fore it simply surprised me that there are those who seemed to display the attitudes they did. Personally I am not 100% up do date on this, only what I have read recently from links in this thread, but I would think life in prison for harassment would be harsh, although punishment is mandated. I am not sure any normal person could harass me on the internet to that point as I can simply block people, change accounts, etc. I have had this same discussion with my daughter, because at some point she is going to want to utilize FB or some other social media and I can not shelter her forever, nor should I. I can however set her up for success in the event that such an event should present itself.
