In my laziness and cowardice I never bothered with the ammo or grenade or pouch bits for the space marine models. I was wondering if anyone else uses them and how? I figured that the bits would often not really fit in with the rest of the model and never thought to experiment with them.

I try to use them, but often forget as they're such small pieces.
It's all preference man, some people like the pouches, but others don't.

i use them a lot...
i always figured that Marines should look like Special Forces Operators, so the more ammo and grenades the better...
knives, too

the pouches, holstered pistols, and grenades fit nicely around the waist, and bulk the Marine out even more...
a few small pouches on the shoulder pads or chest look cool...
sheathed knives on the lower leg are my favorite...
it really helps to make Marines look a bit like Navy Seals or Delta Force...

they are also fun to paint, as you get to mess around with brown leather texture, the little green squares on the frag grenades, some red on the krak grenades, black plastic on the holstered pistol...
lots of stuff to play around with...

cheers

I don't bother, but that's because I feel they look a bit busy on marines.

Mainly though, I'm too lazy to paint the extra details

Never bothered with them except on the old RT01 beakies that need them.

Just a bit too much that at 3' across a table isn't worth it, character models are different but on normal marines no.

Ditto my WHFB orcs produced a whole pile of pouches etc in a box that are just not worth the effort

I generally try to toss at least one extra bit on every marine. Not everyone ends up with them glued on, but when I’m sorting out bits to put a squad together, I try to toss one in each guy’s pile.

For some squads, I use them to help differentiate them. When I built 2x10 man squads from the BaC box, half of them had pistols holstered, the other half had spare CC weapons.

I don't really like the look of them. I didn't mind them when they were moulded on to the models back in the day, but when the models became plastic and the pouches had to be glued on afterwards they started to feel like they were just tacked on rather than part of the models.

I used them on the older marines, to make the legs seem more dynamic (the pouches cover up the squat legs) but the newer ones, like Rubric Marines, don't need them.

I always do. Considering marines for what they represent, all be it fictional, these guys are supposed to be battle hardened warriors that have for some, centuries of experience...what kind of warrior goes into a battle with only one magazine in the gun, no grenades or a close quarters assault option, if the kit is available?

In my opinion they should look like special forces, loads of kit, placed individually according to their own preferences, like our modern day warriors.

I'm doing my own thing because it's fun. And it takes longer, which means more entertainment value for my cash. So there

I never use them, but that's mostly because I play CSM and I feel the more organised look the pouches give them clashes with the whole raving lunatic aesthetic.

Huh, my CSM are LOADED with pouches. They're raiders, after all, and carry all their equipment with them.

I always use them for the reasons already discussed; they add detail to paint, bulk up the model a bit, marines have to carry ammo, etc somewhere... The models don't look quite complete to my eyes without these small pieces. Besides if used right they can give your models a bit more character. Same goes for Imperial Guard models (I love giving them backpacks), Chaos Space Marines, Ork Boyz etc

I always use pouches and grenades, but that's because I play Alpha Legion in 30k and they're a bit more tactical than the classic marines in shining armour of other legions.

I prefer to buy from miniature manufacturers that *don't* support the overthrow of democracy.
