Hey, everyone, I've recently started collecting a 30k Death Guard army that consists of:
1x Calas Typhon
1x Contemptor Dread
5x Cataphractii Terminators (Twin lightning claws)
40x Tactical Marines
5x Heavy Weapons Team (Missile Launchers)
5x Heavy Weapons Team (Plasma Cannon)

What should I get next? I like running the 20 man tactical blobs so I don't think that Rhinos will be part of my collection. And for my second question, I would like to start a very small 1000ish point army of either Night Lords or Alpha Legion but I have no idea of where to start. Any and all help is welcome, thanks!

Armour. Proper armour. The Sicaran Battle Tank is usually the first FW-specific vehicle I recommend people get for reasons of awesomeness and versatility in small environments.

As for the other two Legions Night Lords like Jump Packs for outnumbering the enemy, and I wouldn't recommend starting Alpha Legion until you've got a better idea what you're doing since their Legion rules are written around taking everything in the book and making it do something it shouldn't be able to do (i.e. Infiltrating bikes) rather than taking some things and making them do their job better the way most Legion rules work. Playing Alpha Legion is an exercise in tripping up your opponent's expectations and doing things he's not prepared for, but that means you need to have a good handle on what the other guy's expectations are before you begin or you might as well be playing without Legion rules.

(Also get some Grave Wardens. They're awesome and they make anything you point them at poo itself and run away screaming.)

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

What is the best way to run a Sicaran? What makes the Grave Wardens so good? They seem fairly weak against other MEQ and TEQ

I run my DG sicarian as las+gun, that being said, DG lists can be really REALLY good without tanks (I DO like dreads though)

Grave wardens are AMAZING because:
1) same price as power fist termies
2) take away charge bonuses when you charge them
3) you can overwatch with your chem cloud (unlike every other cataphractii unit in the game)
4) amazing guns (since you essentially get them for free)

(assuming 10-man squads, 'cause that's what I like to run)
great against MeQ, TeQ, and Mechanicum with their shooting (20 shots at S: 6, or 20 small blasts that wound on a 3+ to really just pump out wounds)
amazing against MeQ, TeQ, and Mechanicum in CC (power fists man. ~30 S: 8 AP: 2 swings on the charge is nothing to ignore)

AND they dont eat up your elite slots, meaning you can bring MORE terminator or other such units (DG can spam the most terminators out of everyone with 33 in HQ (3 Praetors + 30 Deathshroud body Guard) 60 in troops (with PotL) 40 in elites, and 30 in Heavy Support)

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

Without vehicles? What would a list like that look like? With how terrain heavy our boards are it's hard to utilise tanks to their fullest potential.

nope, I just simply don't bring tanks.

the list I brought to LVO this year (and happened to go 5-1 and take 7th with.... totally not gloating ) looked like:

Seige breaker
primus medicae
10 Deathshroud

2 15-man tactical squads

3 separate quad mortars (shatter + phosphex)
2 apothecaries

10 Grave Warden
1 deredeo

Mortarion

Honestly, building tank free lists that do well is SUPER easy in 30k. I usually bring 2 or so 20-man tactical squads with apothecaries, heavy support infantry, and plenty of terminators. Basically I have fun with what I think is fluffy or entertaining to play with.

So then from the sound of it I'm on the right track and should start piling on the terminators. How do you like Mortarion? I've heard mixed reports on him but absolutely love the model.

Mortarion is one of the better primarchs in the game IMO (and I SWEAR this is not bias)

while he's middle of the road for primarch fighting (this changes when you factor in RoWs, charging with squads, and the fact that his number of wounds typically means you've locked a primarch in CC for 7+ turns of combat), he truly shines when it comes to fighting against anything else. For your army he buffs frag missiles/grenades (making them actually useful), makes your entire army stubborn, and pairs amazingly with both of our RoWs. As himself, he's stupidly tanky, the fastest primarch in the game (6" move, 10" warp, an a 7+ charge). His scythe is high strength, has instant death, and MC to mitigate rolls, and now swings at I: 4 instead of 1. This means that he can basically solo near any infantry squad, take on 4+ Castellax (and win before taking any wounds), tear up thanatars (and mechanicum in general).

Anyone who says he's not pretty damn good is lying to themselves...... or are trying to use him funny.

Ok, you have me sold on picking up a Morty, but what about Typhon? I picked him up because I love the model and he's performed well so far, but is he actually any good? Also, with the 20 man tactical blobs is it worth it to run and Masters of Signal for the sweet BS5?

Typhon is entertaining, to say the least. He gets a fun Poison (3+) D3 barrage, an entertaining WT, good Close combat ability, and fits right in with a bunch of Grave Wardens

a Master of Signal is almost always an okay choice (BS 5 tacticals is fun, coming from the Imperial Fist player in me), but he's kinda expensive, and as your forces grow you'll probably end up fielding him less in favor of other units, like a siege breaker once you get some artillery.

I've been playing my Death Guard as their Chaos variants in 40k over the last few days and I'm loving their resilience. Would it be worth it to throw some Apothecaries in with the 20 man squads? Also, Leviathan and Deredeo (Dorito) dreadnoughts. Yes or no? I love the models but I'm not too familiar with their combat effectiveness. At first glance, the Leviathan seems too slow if I only run it with the CC options and the Deredeo (Dorito) wouldn't get a lot of use from its Skyfire rules as fliers are not common with my play group. Aside from those couple concerns what are the overall opinions of the Leviathan and Deredeo (Dorito) dreads in 30k?

20-man tactical squads with Apothecaries is the core of nearly every one of my DG lists. It's an amazingly strong combo, that is SUPER fluffy for DG (in the fluff, it was the standard set-up for our tactical squads)

Leviathans are amazingly fun, as are deredos. (Deredeos only get skyfire if you declare them as having it for that turn, so you can use them as amazing AT units too)

really, the primary point with 30 is that basically everything is viable, and there is no truly bad options (beyond rotor cannons, unless you play Mechanicum, militia, or Thousand Sons)
