Looking for a new project. Ideally a new GW army as I have painted my way through my current collection.
I have a loyalist chapter of Emporer's Children (30k scheme)
and a small detachment of Imperial Fists (Though im tired of painting that much yellow, so theyre done too haha)

I pick my armies based on largely how much fun they are to paint, with a bit on the fluff too. I want an army that is fun, but challenging to paint and one where you get decent bang for your buck. Suggestions?

Personally... I've had tons of fun painting orks of various types. Busy doing my Bloodbowl orks now. After that AoS Death stuff is fun and Ad Mech. It varies a lot per person though

Poor ignorant guardsmen, it be but one of many of the great miracles of the Emperor! The Emperor is magic, like Harry Potter, but more magic! A most real and true SPACE WIZARD! And for the last time... I'm not a space plumber.

What's "fun" is pretty subjective, but given that you've already done SM I'm going to suggest Eldar or Tau.

I would say to choose IG.
Even though most armies, of all races, wear uniforms, you can vary what certain units wear with IG:
Vet squads could be brought in from another platoon,
Change races around, with a wimpy Ogryn or tough Ratling in a normal troop squad. I have a Bomb-Squat in my demolitions vet squad.
Mix in women or have a female-only unit or 6,
Aircraft would probably be from the Imperial Navy and have different scheme,
Have vehicles patched up with parts from all over, with nose-art and similar.

There is a lot you can do with IG.

I am a big fan of Eldar and Daemons because both armies have such a wide variety of paint schemes that can all be done in the same list.
Nothing suggests you need to paint the whole army the same scheme (like most Marine armies)

Eldar. Solely based on the fact that the entire army has so many different colours/options. You're not stuck painting one scheme, or even one type of armour/figure.

I'm going with Eldar. I have some of all 3 types, and they are really amusing and fun. My other experience is Blood Angels (and the same 3 colors over and over leaves me hating painting).

Craftworlders are great, especially if you like aspects because every set of 5-10 can be a new shrine and thus a new color. I love my aspects, and all lined up they make quite the varied shelf of colors.
Spoiler:

I need to get Irrilyth painted so he's less of a big, white eye-sore.

Harlequins are technicolored insanity and nobody really cares if you paint them with their signature and oh-so-obnoxious diamond pattern. Stripes, swirls, and most other patterns work just fine. And once again, Harlies lend themselves to a bunch of color schemes since they work in small groups, and since they're so colorful already, may as well give each squad a theme of some sort.

I just started painting Dark Eldar, and although the spikes can hurt, the models are absolutely gorgeous and intricate - they lend themselves very well to some great schemes if you feel comfortable taking them outside the typical black with some colored edge scheme they usually have. Brighter colors are also easy to justify since you can just call them DE-leaning Corsairs. Not that there's anything wrong with the standard schemes; their segmented armor makes the standard schemes work well without being too boring.

Edit: if you do like consistency throughout your army though, they lend themselves to that as well. Each aspect is different enough, and i've seen some really nice Eldar armies all based on the same colors.

Seriously, Orks the funnest army ever!! soo many conversions! And even if you don't want ot do conversions, their vehicles etc are fun as is! You don't have to get terribly involved painting them, unless you really want to - there's loads of detail you can do, or skip, as you prefer. Plus hellloooooo looted wagon! <3 Army is fun as all get out to play too. Maybe not "competitve" but come on... killing stuff by throwing up on them? Killkannon? SQUIGS?! Yeah, you know you want to

I love the variety that chaos daemons provides, but also admit to being a little jealous of my husbands orks for the amount of creativity and bright fun color pallettes that go into it.

Your message is subjective. Many years later I realize in regards to army painting, it is always easier to paint an army you think is cool or makes you excited. That should be first over color options etc. After all this is something YOU want to enjoy. If you think marines are boring mix it up. Chapters work togther all the time and im currently doing dark angels with some blood angelsbecause my first codex was the old 2nd edition Angels of death and it reminds me of fun times. Elder are fun with their variety and you will learn a lot painting them. I suggest staying away from guard. Its one of the most over whelming armies I've ever painted. Enjoy painting piles of the same guardsmen.

Just pic and army you think its cool. Who cares about the stupid rules and model them how you like. People get so tripped up on what they should and should not be doing and forget its a game...

As has already been stated, the most fun army to paint is going to be a force that you are very much into. If you love the lore of an army, you are going to have a much better time painting them.

As for me, I love painting up Inquisition/sudo-Inquisition forces. I've painted up my Tempests Scions in Inquisition colors, and when I finally get some Ogryns I'm tempted to paint them up in the same scheme. Last but not least are the Inquisitors themselves, kit bashing for days!

You say Fiery Crash! I say Dynamic Entry!

*Increases Game Point Limit by 100*: Tau get two Crisis Suits and a Firewarrior. Imperial Guard get two infantry companies, artillery support, and APCs.
