This WEEK’S TOP STORY
SAMUEL L. JACKSON TO STAR IN UNBREAKABLE SEQUEL GLASS

First off, before you continue reading this story, please be advised that it contains a spoiler for a movie that is not Unbreakable. We’ll wait right here. Okay, if everyone is good to go, let’s proceed! In 2000, M. Night Shyamalan (hot off the success of The Sixth Sense) directed Unbreakable, which was marketed like another supernatural thriller, but was actually a superhero origin movie, long before superhero movies became as popular as they are now. There was talk of an Unbreakable sequel, which eventually subsided, but it jumped back into the pop culture consciousness this January when the ending of Split revealed that film to be set in the same world as Unbreakable. Well, this week, M. Night Shyamalan revealed that his next film will be called Glass, taking its title from the villain played by Samuel L. Jackson. Bruce Willis will also return (as Unbreakable hero David Dunn), as will James McAvoy, reprising his own villain role from Split. Universal Pictures has scheduled Glass for release on January 18, 2019.

Huh. Liked Unbreakable, didn't like Split (slow paced in typical Shyamalan style with a stupid "twist"), and not sure why they waited 17 years to followup.

Probably because Unbreakable bombed but Split did quite well.

UNBREAKABLE didn't bomb, did it?

I mean, it probably 'disappointed' in terms of box office when compared to The Sixth Sense, but, most films did/do?

Box office was about $95M domestic, $153 international, for a total of $248M on a production budget of $73M. So no, it was a very profitable film. The recent history of certain comic book movies pushing a billion in box office has skewed perspectives beyond belief.

Metacritic comes in at a 62, so reviews were favorable overall but not glowing like Sixth Sense. unbreakable is easily my favorite M. Night film, but I understand why not everyone liked it. It's a very subdued film that doesn't try to be a crowdpleaser. Signs, on the other hand, seemed to be much more crowdpleasing despite the ridiculous story.

I remember seeing Unbreakable when it came out, decent enough flick but it's going on 20 years now, I was but a wee lad when it came out. I'll have to rewatch it.

Unbreakable is easily one of M. Night's movies. I really liked it.

Probably not. The movie we are talking about came out last year.

Unbreakable was ok. Sixth Sense was great. Signs was fething weird. The Village was lame.

I gave up on him after those.

I enjoyed Signs, Unbreakable was really good, and I want to see Split still. Village was...eh.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Yeah, I was making a joke about borrowing a physical copy. I haven't watched an actual DVD in many years.

Hmmm.... Lets pretend I remembered to type 'best' in that sentence, lol.

I was excited going into The Village, and left disgustedly thinking, "Wait...really? Ugh."

Just a shame we didn't see them learning their folly in Scotland or Wales. Man, that'd make them think twice!

And the surface is made up of mostly battery acid...and the indigenous population is also mostly battery acid... Man that was a terrible idea. The movie had some decent moments but that 'twist' was just awful. Still I'd rather watch that again than the one with Mark Wahlberg where plants emit a pheromone to make humans kill themselves.

It is The Happening and it is amazing on most levels, especially the acting.

Yeah both of those were awful and kind of embody his prototypical dumb plot with stupid/pointless twist archetype. Really, 6th Sense was his high point and Unbreakable was pretty good, if slow paced.

Split was a slow, unnecessary origin story that relies on mental illness being equated with the bad guy, which always makes me very uncomfortable. It's right up there with stereotypes like Arab=terrorist and black=thug. Worse, it relied on a pretty disgraced theory of multiple personality, which is, in itself, often associated with those who are *victims* of traumatic experiences, which the movie even acknowledged. My guess is that he was trying to show the contrast between how the protagonist and antagonist handled their trauma, but it still felt wrong as the more severely damaged was portrayed as evil. It's like a lazy reverse Legion.

It also gets really awkward when you then look back and see that the disabled black guy in Unbreakable was also the bad guy, and the working class, emotionally distant, athletic white guy is the hero with superpowers that help him reconnect with his son and wife. Yikes!

I liked 6th sense, unbreakable, the village, and signs.. then everything else sucked till recently.. that one where the kids go to their grandparents house was pretty good. Even in his sucky movies, one thing I always liked about M Knight is almost all of his stuff is filmed in or around Philly. I know some folks who have been extras in a few of his films.

For what it's worth, the Rifftrax to it was spectacular.

Personally, I can't stand Shymalan's movies, but my girlfriend recently drug me kicking and screaming to the couch for Unbreakable on movie night a few weeks past (I'd never actually seen it) and I was genuinely surprised by the fact that it was enjoyable.

I think the best part was the weightlifting scene where they go to the stadium for a better weight set, and the football player's reactions.

It is. I thought about mentioning it but wasn't sure since it hadn't been seen yet. Of course I never saw the Twilight movies but I still saw Rifftrax of it so YMMV in that instance. Just awful movies. Awful. The Rifftrax for Twilight was very funny and I still barely made it through the film.
