CBR3D.com will launch on the 1st June.

As the name of the site implies our service will be the 3D printing of models and figures for gamers and modellers, with a special twist that is unavailable commercially anywhere else.

As we approach the date of launch we will be giving a few teasers out.

Interesting. Your FAQ says you use Polylactic acid (AKA bioplastic, I believe) for your printing. According to wikipedia, that stuff is biodegradable. What does that mean in terms of the finished product? Will it eventually rot away and under what conditions?

pla is biodegradable; but it needs exposure. If you paint and seal the minis it should last several hundred years. its when its exposed to heat and moisture you start getting degradation.

The two primary types of materials most 3d printers use is PLA and ABS.

PLA can be smoothed by use of Chloroform and ABS can be smoothed by Acetone. PLA is the most common printing material out there. It normally comes with a slight chalky look to the figure if it's printed small enough. Failure to print it small enough will have visible lines.

Abs tends to be smoother but lines can still be visible. The size they are printing at will make the lines near invisible.

In both cases you can smooth out the lines with a gap filler product. Neither of those two are going to break down in the lifetime of the model in all honesty. Especially, once they have been painted and sealed.

@RiTides

Please bare with us, over the next 4 weeks we shall be giving a lot more information out.

@JudgeDoug

Ah, the 'teasers'. Just a little patiance for a few days and the first one will be revealed.

@Perfect Organism

A very good question.

There are several different types of PLA plastic, each designed for specific uses and markets. For example there are medical items made from PLA such as that used in some biophysical applications (such as skeletal screws to join two sections of bone together), these can specifically use a specially designed PLA that is expected to biodegrade within the body generally within 6-24 months, other types can be designed to last longer under the same environment. Other PLA items can use specific PLA's to dissolve within specific timescales in other specific environments, think use of PLA material bottles in the oceans as an example. The PLA we use is designed for long term engineering applications within the atmosphere, ie. lasting decades, and the 'lifetime' is further enhanced by protecting it from the environment by such things as painting it. Of note, despite its ability to degrade when exposed to the elements over a long time, PLA is extremely robust in any normal application e.g. as a plastic electronics part.

(Biodegradable with regard to PLA plastic actually means that eventually the material will be degraded to its constituent chemical parts. I have never put PLA in one of my home winemaking fermenting demijohns, but under such conditions I would imagine the yeast would make fairly short shrift of it over a period of months though. )

I prefer using FDM to print terrain, buildings and larger pieces. However for gaming miniatures, at least 28/32mm and not vehicles, FDM specifically using PLA just doesn't get the details. I am surprised they aren't using SLA or DLP printers for miniatures and FDM for terrain/vehicles.

Ah, a tricky comment to deal with without giving too much away.

At the moment what I can say is that FDM is our preferred method of printing for buildings and terrain also. As for detail on figures let us just at the moment say that it depends on the model being printed.

Looking forward to seeing some of your stuff - been tempted to order a mini for my DnD game from Hero Forge for a while but I'd rather buy from a company in the UK.

Well we said we would issue a teaser or two before launching, which now is in just 24 days away.

So here is the first teaser (no pictures yet, the first teasers containing those will come next weekend, this is just a real teaser ).

- For all those D&D fans out there what about a ‘Dungeon Set’ or ‘Sewer Set’.

- For Tabletop Gamers what about a ‘Castle Set’ or ‘American Western Buildings Set’.

- For Sci-Fi Gamers what about a ‘40k Style Buildings Set’.

- For Fantasy Gamers, no we haven't forgotten you, we will be offering a whole plethora of sets and models.

All of the above, and more, will be available as soon as we launch on June 1st, and not just as sets but the individual models that make up those sets as well.

We will bring you 3d prints of the best 3D designs from the world’s top producer of such.

And remember most of our printed models and sets will be available in 10mm, 15mm, and 28mm scales.

Now back to work, still more to do here to bring you this lot. including next weekend some teaser photos of models.

OK, I think I got the wrong impression from '3D printing company'. I kind of assumed that your main business would be printing unique models which people had designed themselves and producing masters for casting. But you're apparently providing your own range of designs, only 3D printed instead of cast in resin like most companies do.

I'm curious what the advantages of 3D printing everything rather than casting in resin from a 3D printed master are. Seems unlikely that it will work out cheaper. Having single piece models rather than lots of fiddly parts to work with might be good.

Firstly, apologies if I gave the wrong impression to you or anyone else, it is obviously not in our interests to do so.

Normally the gut instinct I agree would be that 3D printed models would end up being more expensive, especially when taking into account the initial outlay someone would have to make in purchasing a 3D printer. But really it needn't be so if done commercially (and planned properly of course).

What we are or rather will be from June 1st, offering to our prospective customers is for us to print the models for them, this from a series of ranges of models from what many gamers consider the best designer of wargaming and gaming 3D designs available.

I should just say that we, CBR3D.com, will also consider taking on printing work where customers who already have 3D designs to print, but this will be on an individual basis for each customer.

Well with running around like a hen without a head (at least that is what it feels like at times here), remembered that I had to put up a 'teaser' today.

Added a page to the published website, www.cbr3d.com , titled 'Teaser Gallery', here are the photos to give everyone a taste of what we are making available (the two figures are to show scale only, one is a Mantic figure the other I think is a GW figure).

These two pieces (Base and Tower Level 1) are straight off the printer and no 'cleaning up' has been carried out on them at all.

Over the next few days I will add other photos of the model culminating in showing the completed model painted and dressed, as well as the 15mm and 10mm versions of the same model so that gamers can see the quality we will be offering.

If you have any questions feel free to contact us via the contacts form on the website (several people already have).

Just 18 days to go now until the launch.

When adding a URL link it is better to do something like:

You also want to be sure you use the full size image URL instead of the preview image. It saves people from jumping to another website, let's them view them in their full. I've include them in my post to help out.

@Dark Severance - Thank you.

I am jumping about between jobs at the moment and never even thought about checking the photo's, had enough problems getting the images to load in the first place.

But again, thank you.

Aw man, I thought this was to be a shapeways style print-your-stuff-on-demand type thing.

Still, always a fan of any 3D printing endeavour, so good luck with it all.

Only questions I'd really have would be about what sort of printers you have, if you have a Form2 can I borrow it for a few weeks, and do you have one of them fancy wax printing jobbies? (Solidscape)

Edit:
Well, read the FAQ.
Interesting, dubious about a few things, but good luck with the experiment!

Sorry for the quietness over the past two weeks, but following involvement in an 'RTA' things took a bit of a downturn. :(

For this reason we have postponed the launching of 'CBR3d.com' for about one week, the launch will occur on the 9th June (or before if at all possible).

All those who have registered an interest and emailed us should have received an email already.

We can though now at this stage confirm what many had suspected and that is that we, CBR3D.com, have bought a licence to produce for sale printed models of the full www.PrintableScenery.com model ranges.

But here is some other breaking news, watch out for news from PrintableScenery.com tomorrow (1st June), some exciting news for all those modellers and gamers in the USA is going to be announced.
