Yeah so anyone have some good tips about doing this?

I painted all of the mini's that came with DOOM the board game a while back, and protected them by first adding a layer of testors glosscote, followed by a layer of testors dullcote after they dried. Since these need to be thinned with lacquer thinner, you will end up removing tiny details of your paintjob, but they'll be super solid for handling at least.

PVA glue (wood glue/elmers glue) thinned down with water will work prior to painting/after painting.

Avoid anything that is aerosolised or lacquer/alcohol based, as it will probably eat away the foam.

Duhrums Water Putty. It's powdered and you add water. Make a paint like soup of it and spread it over the foam. It dries hard as a rock!
