I painted all of the mini's that came with DOOM the board game a while back, and protected them by first adding a layer of testors glosscote, followed by a layer of testors dullcote after they dried. Since these need to be thinned with lacquer thinner, you will end up removing tiny details of your paintjob, but they'll be super solid for handling at least.
