Well I may have jumped the gun and bought an OOP NIB Pestilent Swarm box for 170, and now have to figure out what's the best way to make it viable for AOS. Also how much do the square bases effect the game? Should I just start searching for the correct round bases?

Box includes:
1 Maggoth Lord
3 bases of Nurglings
5 Putrid Blightkings
3 Plague Drones
10 Plaguebearer

Would appreciate any tips or tactics.

Most people shouldn't/won't care about square bases.

As for the contents, looks like you've got a nice Nurgle force, though it's split between mortals and daemons. So you'll likely use the straight Chaos allegiance.

In short, you're fine and your models viable.

Cool, what's the difference between using the grand alliance: chaos book vs the specific formations for rotbringers or nurgle demons? (Glugorou's plagueband)

Do you have to use formations in match play or just pick the units you want?

I would use circle bases personally so when you buyg new stuff, it doens seem out of place.

In matched play, you need 2-4 battleline units depending on the pts size, 2 for 1000, 3 for 2000, 4 for 2500. Consult the general's handbook for further list building restrictions.

I'll second getting round bases, as you're starting from scratch anyway. Most people won't care, but if you go to a tournament, organizers have a right to demand standardized bases.

I used to be indifferent, but the first time there are tournament stakes and someone claims an extra rank gets to be in melee range because they used tiny square bases, you'll definitely find it irksome. :-p

GHB is the only "must", but if you're like me and prefer physical media for your rules, Grand Alliance: Chaos would be a good pickup. It also lists a few battalions (formations) for Nurgle.

Still trying to wrap my head around list building for AOS. Does the grand alliance have benefits for using whatever I want like the bonuses for filling out a rotbringers formations or nurgle daemon formation? Which this box set puts me right down the middle unable to claim ether formation without purchasing more models?

Can I go nurgle daemon start collecting formation by adding a herald & get their bonus rule for just the daemons and add in the maggot lord & blightkings for no bonus rules.

Yes.

As for round bases, I'd recommend them. They really do look better that way and it will match the new stuff.

As for the Maggoth Lord, Bloab Rotspawned is probably your best bet.
