So, I'm mulling over starting an Astra Militarum army, probably Cadians with the Hostile Environment upgrades from Forge World. I'd really like the detail on my tanks to match the amount of kit on the infantry, but I have no idea where to get appropriately scaled tank accessories. I don't have much in the way of bits access (my whole collection is in storage 2000km away) so I'm pretty much starting from scratch. Does anyone know what companies might make good tank accessories for 40K? I'm looking for general stuff, jerry cans, crates, tarps, antennas, whatever. Any help here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks gents!

*edit* So I found Accurate Armour, great site. I'll still take all the suggestions I can get though.

Yeah, Those aren't bad at all. My initial thought was that they were expensive, but it's really just the conversion to GBP that kills.me.

1/48th scale stuff also works as GW tanks are over-sized.
Just look for any web company that does a good range of Tamiya kits & you should find something.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

There's 1:35 M3 Half-Track Stowage Kit on ebay. It costs quite some penny, though in the end i think it would be definitely worth it.

Lots of 1/35 stuff fits well with 40k scale tanks. I've used gun barrels, jerry cans, grenade dischargers, exhausts, shells etc a few times on different tanks.

Some of it can be quite hit and miss when it comes to scale, some 1/48 can be too small and some 1/35 can look huge. I picked up some 1/35 tamiya sets a few years ago and only used one or two things from the entire packs.

Here's some other sets of kit to go with the other suggestions mentioned above.

https://www.battlemart.com/battle-e-fects-w-w-ii-tank-accessories-vehicle-stowage.html

Tarpaulin and kit rolls can be made easily by rolling out some magic sculp really thin, cutting it to shape, then rolling it up and placing on your vehicle.

Tow rope is easily done by replacing the plastic GW wires with brass picture wire.

(Edit) Here's a couple of old pics of some 1/35 bits on Gw tanks to show the scale.

1/35 PZ/iv exhaust

1/35 Tiger II exhaust shrouds, jerry cans and rack.

1/35 brass smoke dischargers on turret.

All three of those are awesome, thanks. I love the detail on the Rubicon ones. I'll have to see if I can get that from their USA web store.

You guys have a been a great help! Keep it coming if you have more ideas too. I'm sure it's not just me benefiting from this thread.

I second this. Value gear has a wide range of equipment and stowage. They sell it in 1/48th, I/56th, and 1/35th.
Modern, WW iI, and futuristic. The cost isn't terrible either for what you get.

I tried the tamiya stowage set, there are some pieces that you can use. The 55gal drums are quite big. For WH40k, they are about shoulder height on an IG grunt.

You can also use paper towels, napkins or any product like that soaked in water and PVA glue then roll/ shape them to make tarps. Tie them with thread to look like rope. I've also used balsa wood to make box shapes, then covered with green stuff tarps.

Look through junk drawers too. It's amazing what you can find in there that you can modify to make look like stowage. When I served as an infantryman, it was what we could get our grubby mitts on that we carried our "stuff" in. It wasn't always military stowage. (Or stuff).

The last piece of advice would be to scrounge around yard sales and store close outs of military models, eBay auctions can be good as well. The parts of the kits can be a treasure trove of bits. Road wheels, tools, etc can be had on the cheap that way as well.

Good luck!

Part of my difficulty is where I live, which is on Baffin Island. There's no hobby store, and yard sales aren't like they are down south. Still, I'll definitely do some sailing this summer and see what turns up. I'll need scenery eventually as well (if I can convince my boys to play) and yard sales are even better for that kind of shizz.

Speaking of tarps, the 1/35th strap and ratchet set from Accurate Armour is effing amazing looking. It might be too fragile for casual play (resin) but I was pretty stunned at the detail.

I go to my local model shop and buy tank stuff there. Really helps in making a 'custom' tank I find. Improvised armour, extra supplies strapped on, etc.

It'd be great if he had a local store, Novelist. He lives on Baffin Island, up north of GodKnowsWhere and way far from TypicalCivilizationLand. Remote is a good term for his location. So any potential sources are few, and the rest he has to order in from abroad.

That said, it's a good idea to put stowage and such on the tanks, gives them a lived-in on campaign look.

Yeah, remote covers it. There is a local comic store here in Iqaluit, and the owner has dabbled with the idea of stocking GW as there are a handful of players locally, but the investment (very reasonably) looks way too high for the expected return, especially when he has no gaming background and no ability to paint, make terrain, or demo the game (and thus a limited ability to sell the game to new players).

I've been at the hobby a ridiculously long time, and I'm way past being excited about rolling out stock vehicle kits with shiny new paint jobs. I want lots of additional detail and all the weathering I can manage. Thanks goodness for the Forgeworld Modeling Masterclass books and Weathering magazine (and this fine community of posters here on Dakka of course).

Again, thanks for all the ideas gents.

I know another guy from Iqaluit, I won't assume you know him though, since the community does have a few thousand in it if I recall.

Yeah, I'm working on increasing my general level of skill and depth on my projects as well.
