I've recently returned to Warhammer 40K after a pretty long hiatus due to my lack of time and small dislike of 7th edition rule sets. I'd been playing since 5th edition, and right before I quit Ad Mech was released. Now, I've loved Ad Mech since I got into Warhammer 40K lore and was super excited to play the army of religious robots. But I took a break from the hobby before I really got into the army. Flash forward to now with 8th edition rule set and my triumphant return to the hobby! My FLGS was hosting a 750 tournament to celebrate, so I dusted off my Ad Mech army, and went over there expecting some good times.

And I'm not saying good times weren't had. It was great getting back into the hobby, rolling dice and laughing over lucky rolls and 'ahhhing' over paint jobs. But all that kind of got overshadowed by how...well whiny many of the players were. I got gak throughout the entire four hour tournament because of the army I brought. I had no idea Ad Mech were considered broken, I never even got that impression while scrolling through the forums. Yet 3 out of 4 of my opponents constantly complained about all my re-rolls and Plasma Cavaliers, and Rad-Carbines, and just how much of TFG I was for bringing the army even after I told them I had no idea Ad Mech was so broken. One of them even refused my handshake after the game. It kind of killed the mood, and I went home feeling pretty down.

I'm honestly now glad Ad Mech is getting toned down in 8th edition so I can play the army I want without all this drama.

What was the list you were playing? Sounds like some unsporting tournament players were a bit upset at an outsider disrupting things.

Edit:
Forgot to ask was a prize at stake?

I tried to take a TAC list, Arc rifles for armor, Plasma against heavy infantry (and who doesn't love plasma?) Dragoons because their models are neat and melee couldn't hurt, and the Onager for general hurtiness. I mean, I didn't want to be rude and hypocritical, but for goodness sakes one of the guys complaning took a Stormraven, a Fireraptor, a Landingpad, some sort of Heavy Bolter Artillery thing, and scouts. Two flyers in a 750 game! Only reason I won was the weight of wounds coming from Rad-Poisoning killed his infantry before his flyers could get on board.

There was a prize, although I actually had no idea there was one until like the end of the tournament. It was Indexes, and dividing up the starter set. I was actually the only person to win nothing. I won 3rd place, but everything after 2nd place was randomized and I didn't get picked.

To the O,P,
I wish you were more specific with yous thread title.'40k is still hideously unbalanced .' Would be a more accurate title.

I was wondering what war game you were having trouble with.
And then found out you were referring to a company with minature ranges who write rules for them as an afterthought.(With very little if any thought given to game play considerations.)

GW plc are a minatures company not a war games company.Lower your expectations , in comparison to actual war games companies products. And the way the gamers respond the the rules and army lists.

Wow, no excuse for that kind of crappy sportsmanship. Please avoid these people in future. Lots of mature, well adjusted opponents out there.

This is the main issue with wargaming. In reality it's 90% the people you play with and 10% the game you play (aesthetic preferences aside). If we're all honest that's not how we view gaming though - our first interest is often "the game" or its aesthetics/models, etc. This is why more often than not pick-up gaming and tournament gaming, etc. falls short...and why games like 40K which attract...interesting individuals make it a sour experience in a lot of cases.

With a good friend or two, or just some like-minded folks any game can be a good time, but the opposite can spoil anything. All the more frustrating when you've spend 300 hours assembling/painting building a massive army just to run into a whiny witch.

Admittedly sometimes you have to find a way to meet people so it's akin to speed dating. Play some games until you find a gamer or two whom you actually get along with and whos interests/intensity matches your own.

In short...if you can weather some idiots, start looking for the better folks to game with.

All the other war games I have played, have much better defined rules, balanced for random pick up games and tournaments. So this sort of shinanigans is minimized.

It's really not. I play plenty of other, better written wargames and these types of players inhabit ALL of them.

Please take your shoulder chip to another thread, Lanrak.

This is what I stopped pick-up games and only play with people I know. Before I play randos, I make sure I have at least watched them play a game or two so I know if they are aligned with my playstyle.

To be honest, I went home worried my list was really a TFG kind of list and that I should've done more research before I went to a more casual tournament.

However, I'm glad to hear that's not the case, and it was simply a bad case of unsportsmanlike like conduct from a few select gamers. Thanks for the support everyone.

I'm going to give the FLGS another try, because I'd hate for a few sour apples to ruin this new edition for me (and they are the only one in the area -_-). Hopefully I'll meet some better spirited people and avoid those complainers! Plus, if they thought my Vanguard were bad, wait until they see 8th edition Kastelans.

Ha! Your list was fine, especially for a tournament or pick-up game. Keep at it, nothing TFG to be seen here

REMEMBER
The players who normally play at the FLGS are not the same as the tournament. While there may have been seveeral from there, typically half or more did not go to that tournament.
Give the FLGS a chance. If its still like that, then its a problem to be addressed.

If someone doesn't shake your hand:
1) They are douche bags and just invited themselves to a biting session with your full auto wiener dog which you of course brought along for just such a contingency (you did didn't you?)
2) They either literally didn't hear you or have a major social dysfunction (remember 40K attracts more thanits share of that).
or
3) dude don't eat the cheetoes before trying to shake their hand!

Don't worry about regardless.

I hate shaking hands, even for work situations.

I substitute with a nod, "Thank you", and a genuine compliment about something to do with their army/list/gameplay etc.

Could be a tight meta group playing there and any non meta army throws them all off and they get grumpy. I see it all the time.

Our group has a standing rule. If its legal, bring it. If you expect to play like TFG with your net-lists-world-beater trash. Good luck getting another game in. At a minimum, give notice of a "higher tier" list for casual games of course.

I played a jackhole at the last went I played. He was abusing the DP "summon-fly off the table trick". He literally said whats wrong with being "tfg". Two DPs at 1k. People.

With that said, at 750pts, your list list is actually tame. Its a good list. But apparently it was a bunch of padiwan learners. They tend to use net list armies and expect to eat face. Still gotta role dice.

Sounds like you crossed paths with a few gak players. That sucks. People crying about lists in a tournament should give their head a shake. It's a tournament FFS.

My return to Wargaming, AoS specifically, was hampered by constant losses and I just had the will to continue playing sucked out of me.
What's the point, you know?
(I've played admech in that small points and my Harlequins destroyed them, never thought they were cheesy, confusing because of the things I'd never heard of).
I hope 8th ed is better then AoS I really wanted to like it but I hate that game.

That's too bad. Getting stomped on repeatedly is no fun at all and can real sour someone to a game!

Have you tried just getting together with a friend and some models and just playing around? If AoS doesn't work for you, try Song of Blade and Heroes or Frostgrave.

The nice thing about having models you like is there are plenty of rule to play with!

None of my friends play warhammer or any miniature games I gotta go to the stores and meet random people.
People always have the attitude that being cheesy and seeing someone annoyed is funny so I basically have stopped playing I can't stand it anymore.
